Report: Bucs A Player For Nnamdi Asomugha

July 28th, 2011

Joe’s done his share of freelance work for the Newark Star-Ledger. The pay’s always top notch.

The point is Joe knows they’re a legitimate outfit with high standards. So Joe will consider their latest, that the Bucs are knee deep in the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes, as a very solid rumor. Here it is:

The Jets initially contacted Asomugha Tuesday. The 49ers and the Texans were also in hot pursuit, but now the Joseph deal presumably eliminates Houston from the race. But Tampa Bay — which has been relatively quiet in free agency thus far — has also been in the mix, per a person with knowledge of the teams competing for Asomugha’s services.

What’s next? Early this evening, the Jets were asking Asomugha for a decision, per a person informed of the communication between the sides.

Exciting? Yes.

A good idea? Sorry. Joe’s confident the Bucs don’t need a cornerback. Aqib Talib’s coming back. Ronde Barber is still here and strong. The Bucs drafted Myron Lewis in the third round and like him. E.J. Biggers is solid.

Nnamdi ain’t worth it. Not in this defense.

But, of course, Joe would cheer for him like hell.

Update 10:27 p.m.: Unintentionally urinating the face of the legions of Nnamdi lovers, Warren Sapp just Twittered the following:

@QBKILLA Tampa Bay Is Not In Nnamdi Asomugha Sweepstakes!!!
Please breathe easy and stay away from bridges.

  1. Wienaman Says:

    Joe:

I agree with you on him, though it isn’t necessarily for the reasons you state; I do think we need a CB, but I do not think we need a CB that is going to leave us looking for another in three or four years. I was hoping for JoJoseph, who would have given us another three years; barring that, I am not any more sure than you are that we should be in the CB market.

  2. BonesMahoney Says:

Sure, the Bucs don’t NEED a CB, but if you have a chance to get a great player you get him. Especially if that player is a CB or DE. You can never have enough covermen or pass rushers.

  3. pbmbuc Says:

Hmmm! OK! I think I would like this if it happened. Rah knows DB’s

  4. Patrick Says:

    @Joe

EJ Biggers is no where near Asomugha’s level of play

  5. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@Patrick — No reason to waste your time stating the obvious. Joe didn’t claim or imply Biggers is.

  6. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

As I’ve said publicly here on JBF since it became clear Nnamdi would be entering free agency…..

He would make this team better. Now go get him.

  7. Patrick Says:

Anybody heard anything about Cadillac? Is he going to re-sign with the Bucs?

  8. Blake Says:

Curious, where would Ronde stand in the scenario that we do sign him? As a perennial leader on the team, is he okay becoming a nickelback?

  9. Tyler Says:

The fact that none of you want Asomugha is baffling. He is the number one free agent on the market and would undoubtedly improve our defense. He is smarter than Talib, more athletic than Barber (not to mention 6 years younger), and much more talented than Biggers and Lewis. This would be huge for our team, and he would also provide a mentor for the younger players on the defense. Go Bucs!

  10. Gary Says:

It’s exciting news and fun to think about but it wouldn’t be a good idea. I just don’t think bringing in a super paid player with so much cheap talent on the team is good for chemistry.

Besides is it a guarantee this won’t hinder talibs “redemption comeback tour”?

  11. Picked Off Says:

Image how the sack numbers could go up when the opposing QB has no where to throw. Now, could this happen without Asomugha, I actually think it could. But…with him it would be pretty exciting to see a rotation including Asomugha, Talib and Barber.

Don’t really see it happening. Doesn’t seem to fit the path Dominick is going, but who knows. Might have been playing it off the whole time. He’s probably got a great poker face.

  12. Theodore Says:

How can any team not “need” a CB? Today’s game favors passing and protects QBs. Teams regularly employ 3+ WR sets. Separate from whether Asomugha is a good signing, teams need CBs like they need OLs.

    Let the spending binge begin!

  13. tony2cents Says:

God bless him, but Ronde could use the extra bench time. It’ll only add to his longevity. Bottom line is, a shut-down corner with a DB minded coach is a recipe for success. Lets get him!

  14. Patrick Says:

The NFC South is gonna be the toughest division in football next year probably. The Saints are consistently good and the Falcons are getting better. The Panthers are rebuilding but they’ll be better as well.

  15. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

I don’t think Ronde would mind playing against the slot receiver……it’s where he’s best anyway

  16. HolyBuc Says:

I would love to see Nnamdi locking down Roddy White and Talib playing on Julio Jones.

It would also help the pass rush if a QB has to hold the ball for another 1/2 second or so.

  17. Shawn Says:

    @KohneysKorner
Marc Kohn Heard Bucs offer could be 6yrs $75 million with $35-40 million guaranteed for Nnamdi Asomugha. #jets #49ers

  18. BigMacAttack Says:

Oh boy, now that would be a dream come true and a major ticket seller.

If the Bucs land Nnamdi, I have to give the Ol Capt’n props, He was on this hard before Aqib had the second handcuff on. I guess I shouldn’t get my hopes up quite yet, but I agree with Joe that the Bucs are deep at CB. Still Dom said you can never have too many. I wonder who Nnamdi will back up. Not really.

  19. tony2cents Says:

Lets not forget that a stud CB can play at a high level well into his mid 30s (Sanders, Green, Woodson). He could be around well past 2015.

  20. BamBamBuc Says:

If they get Asomugha for 12 to 14M on a 3 or 4 year deal with all guaranteed money up front this year, then I’m not opposed to it. It would put the team at, or near the cap floor, it wouldn’t affect the teams ability to re-sign players in future years, he would be terribly over-priced (like the 16 to 18M per year I’ve been hearing) and we could still pick up CB in next years draft if Ronde retires and Talib is suspended (next year) and have a top notch CB still on the roster.

I haven’t been for this deal at all, til I started seeing $12M/yr numbers being tossed around.

  21. josh Says:

    Charlie Burkowitz
BREAKING NEWS: Jets, Asomugha have agreed sources say. 6 yr deal, details being ironed out but framework HAS been agreed to. #jets #nfl

  22. Patrick Says:

Whatever they do, just don’t give him Hanyesworth money

  23. josh Says:

nevermind that guy is a nobody

  24. mjmoody Says:

    Well, jersey #21 is available.

  25. Patrick Says:

but even if they did, he’s the real deal unlike the then overhyped Haynesworth

  26. Renegade Says:

If I hear one more person say they don’t want Nnamdi ima go crazy. He would give us the best secondary in the NFL, and in a passing league, how can you not want him more than any player available???

  27. Dan Says:

we’ve been involved in a whole lot so far with very little to show… come on MARK finish and stop flirting! haynesworth, jonathan joseph, (allegedly) bush (allegedly), Free the tackle from dallas… how about you win one!

  28. tony2cents Says:

I get the feeling like Dom will land this one. He had two (known) misses, and with the Glazers giving him the greenlight on this and their wallets, he’ll close.

  29. Dan Says:

not trying is better pr than trying and failing to get Nmamdi. i would have been more supportive of our not trying for him than if we try and fail

  30. Kenny Says:

To the guy who thinks Nnamdi will sell tickets. You’re nuts.

  31. Tampa--->Baaaaaaayyyy Says:

Not worth breaking the bank on though.

We need that LB from San Fran.

  32. Brad Says:

I agree Dom needs to learn to close.

  33. Thebuc76 Says:

I agree Nnamdi is a beast and a need to this team with ronde retiring soon and talib possibly going to jail after this year. But what are we going to do this year? Bench ronde barber and just put him in with certain packages? I feel like we can’t do that to our face of our defense and only veteran on the team

  34. alan Says:

bring him in why not thats what i wanna kno

    why the hell not

  35. Mauha Deeb Says:

    “Patrick Says:

    @Wienamen

NFL.com’s Steve Wyche has reported that the Bucs aren’t pursuing Asumugha.”

This is why reports don’t mean a thing.

  36. Dan Says:

everybody hates that guy at auctions who starts biddding with no intention of buying… just driving the price up for everyone else.

  37. Patrick Says:

You mean Patrick Willis? I don’t see them letting him go, but if we can get him, I think that’d be better as LB is a bigger need.

  38. barton1017 Says:

i wanted Joseph real bad, i saw on NFL total access that the Bucs are “not” in the running. im so confused on this, so im gonna go out and say “i dont care if they sign him or not” i would love to have him but this “are we in or not” mess is frustrating. i just wish he would agree to terms with someone SOON! anybody have any clue if were gonna get another RB? BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!

  39. Tampa--->Baaaaaaayyyy Says:

What if we landed him though and then cut Talib. Now that would be sending a message 🙂

  40. Dan Says:

i will say this… i feel better with a rookie at mike if namdi is on the outside. let’em run!

  41. Tampa--->Baaaaaaayyyy Says:

Not Willis, not Spikes.. the other FA… drawing a blank.

  42. Patrick Says:

You think we could trade Josh Johnson for anyone? I like Johnson a lot, but he’ll never start here and he could get a chance somewhere

  43. Tampa--->Baaaaaaayyyy Says:

    Manny Lawson

  44. Gary Says:

Spikes is old but could be a wise pickup.

For what it’s worth John Clayton just said jets in the lead but we still in there.

  45. Wienaman Says:

Takeo Spikes already agreed with San Diego

  46. Travis Says:

Manny Lawson is a 3-4 OLB and is not a good player PASS

  48. d clark Says:

People who dont want Nnamdi on this team are honestly dumb and dont know football. Nnamdi is the #1 free agent in this years class. Who cares if were paying him 18 million a year. We need to spend money anyway. I mean Biggers and Lewis are good but are they even on Nnamdi’s level. NO WHERE CLOSE. @Joe is saying he cant play in our scheme. Raheem switches up his scheme so much it doesnt matter what scheme Nnamdi is gonna play in Raheem is going to play to his strengths. Hmmm.. A line up of Nnamdi, Talib(could be suspended), RB, Biggers, Lewis or Talib(possible suspension), Barber, Biggers, Lewis Mack(whoever). Uhm yea ill take the first plz. And who cares if hes 30? if Barber can still play at a high level I can see Nnamdi doing the same. Remember when Woodson changed teams and he was 30 and was supposedly going on the downside of his career? Yea how did that workout I think he won DMVP 2 years ago and was great again last year. If you have a chance to pick up a shutdown corner and have 2 on the field at all times you do it. SMH

  49. Mauha Deeb Says:

A Figure around $12-$14 million I might be able to stomach. But not the 18+ mill that has been harped by many talking heads in the industry.
Either way, I still do not see CB as that large of a need. I would rather spend big money on an OL.

  50. Patrick Says:

Nick Barnett? Anybody know anything about him? Is he any good?

  51. Mauha Deeb Says:

Then again, this could all be BS generated by those same talking heads to get more traffic for as revenue.

  52. Tommy Boy Says:

Joe, if we sign him would you ever admit to him that you were opposed to it?

  53. Jorge Says:

Patrick…Nick Barnett is very solid.. Hardy Knickerson-ish

  54. Patrick Says:

Plus he has a super bowl ring and knows what it takes to get there…..he’d be a good leader along with Barber in that locker room

  55. tony2cents Says:

If the Glazers expect ticket sales to rise, they need to throw us something?! Give Dom a blank check, just this once!

  56. Matt Says:

I like how no one is thinking about our 2012 CBs. With Talib being a FA and Barber likely retiring, our starters would be Biggers and Lewis. Wahoo!

  57. K2theSoldier Says:

Joe is OBVIOUSLY opposed to us signing the 2nd best corner in the league.
Damn, read that and it sure looks stupid doesn’t it.
Barber is done in the next few years and Talib could be suspended.
What an awful idea to add a corner!

  58. gotbbucs Says:

patrick, you are driving me nuts. if you dont know anything about any of these guys you keep naming off then why are you talking?

  59. Bucbeliever Says:

I know it’s before the Sapp update but the Texan part interested me:

    Today – 9:05 PM ET

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, the Bucs have been a stealthy contender for free agent Nnamdi Asomugha.

It’s not clear just when the Bucs entered the race, though it is worth noting that their name appeared just as the Texans dropped out. The Jets are widely considered the favorites, and they are reportedly asking for a decision by the end of the night. The Niners may up the ante as well after losing out on Johnathan Joseph.

    http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/43937213/ns/sports-player_news/

With the Texans signing Joseph (whom the Bucs may have been after), the Bucs could now be focusing on Nnamdi. The nfl.com update of the Bucs not interested in Nnamdi came before the Texans signed Joseph.

    Just a thought…

    GO BUCS!

  60. Mauha Deeb Says:

@gotbbucs Some people just really like interaction. Don’t let it drive you nuts, though. Cause if that is the only thing driving you nuts, you’re in great shape. Take it easy, broseph :o)

  61. FreemanBomb5 Says:

Nick Barnett is fragile as glass, we dont need him. I’d rather play Foster or McKenzie being as they have just as much experience in the system that Barnett does.

  62. Patrick Says:

    @gotbbucs

I asked anyone if they knew anything about him cause I remember hearing his name around joebucsfan the other day when Dominick gave his press conference. We could use a linebacker

  63. m.wesley Says:

Peyton Manning is not signed yet lets pay him! hell sell tickets dont you guys know he is the number two player in the league let alone free agency.lets just over look the young talent!Anyone who dont want Manning would be a fool.

  64. Patrick Says:

If the Jets get Asomugha, are they gonna keep Cromartie or let him go?

  65. Patrick Says:

    @m. wesley

    haha good one

  66. Oahubuc Says:

    AAAAAAGGGHHHH!! This sucks.

  67. Wienaman Says:

Wasn’t interested in Sproles, but I know some were…just reported by a cpl ppl on twitter that he accepted 2 yr offer with New Orleans

  68. Jampersands Says:

@Patrick, Barnett may technically have a ring, but he was injured for most of the second half of last season and did not play in the big game. Watching from the sidelines doesn’t really count as “experience.”

Anyone else think Addai could be a great complement to Blount?

  69. tony2cents Says:

I wish I worked for the CIA so I could tap Dominiks phone right now…PATRIOT ACT bitchs!

  70. Fear The Glow Says:

Ive been back and forth on the Nnamdi thing and the only way I feel that it is worth it is if we changed into a more man coverage system. I just don’t see it happening.

  71. Bucbeliever Says:

apparently jets are asking for a decision tonight by nnamdi. Could we be minutes away from a decision (one way or the other)?

    GO BUCS!

  72. Oahubuc Says:

    TAMPAAAA!

  73. Patrick Says:

Is Cadillac going to be re-signed?

  74. Mauha Deeb Says:

@FearTheGlow Remember, when Talib was drafted analyst griped about it because they said he was more suited for man coverage.
It is still weird to me that the Bucs are headed in that direction. I’m game though.

  75. Mauha Deeb Says:

    BAAAAYYYY!!!!!

  76. Kyle Says:

Biggers was actually pretty damn good last year especially since the bucs looked damn good when talib was out. Not saying talib isn’t good but I think our secondary is strong now rockstar gm go get ruud back dammit!

  77. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Tommy Boy wrote: “Joe, if we sign him would you ever admit to him that you were opposed to it?”

Absolutely. Joe opinion of Nnamdi has nothing to do with his ability or quaility, just fit for the Bucs. No shame or discomfort there.

  78. Bucfan66 Says:

    Jets

  79. m.wesley Says:

I dont care what happens Im drinking kool aid I am a homer I will support them till the end but its just so much easier now that Dom is here

  80. Dan Says:

    BAYYYYY?

  81. JasonM Says:

Screw Namdi!!!! He obviously doesnt want to play here to small of a market for him. He wants the glitz and glammer of NY. We will be fine without him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  82. Dan Says:

dom needs to stop teasing us, either way go for a guy and land him, othwerwise your ‘homegrown blueprint’ stuff just seems like an excuse for poor negotiating skills

  83. JasonM Says:

He will regret it just like I’m sure Haynesworth regreted not coming here.

  84. Oahubuc Says:

Dominik is probably laughing at all of us getting jerked around by the Twitter trolls right now while he works on something entirely different.

  85. Burg Says:

Bucs need at least two splash pickups to pump the gate if nothing else

  86. Mauha Deeb Says:

    @Dan I was completing Oahubuc’s post.

  87. Dan Says:

o i know i didnt see yours, i thought i was completing it too…. but wasnt sure if that was what he was going for hahah thats why i added the question mark. haha

  88. BOb Says:

sproles to new orleans and clabo re-ups with falcons………………………….

  89. Mauha Deeb Says:

    @Dan In that case…….
    TAAAAMPAAA!!!!

  90. Dan Says:

so if the jets wanted their answer tonight… does that mean we may have some relief from this hell anytime soon?

  91. Dan Says:

    oooh i know this one!

    BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYyyyyyy

  92. Bucbeliever Says:

    @Dan…hopefully…

  93. Camby Says:

I dont think this is serious. There’s probably a flirtation just to generate this sort of buzz, and/or look like they’re trying to spend. It’s sexy and gets us talking. But it’s not the biggest need on this team.

  94. K2theSoldier Says:

Clayton says NO deal on Nnamdi yet.

  95. Dan Says:

DONT YOU TEASE ME DOM! DONT YOU TEASE ME!

  96. Shayne Says:

Sign him, Talib might not even be able to play this year and Ronde is getting up there in age. Lewis will be a solid option soon also with biggers, but with all the cap space we have we should sign him! if not Nnamdi, go after Cromartie and if not him get a replacement for Ruud since hes most likely going to leave us, dont want Foster starting his first year.
any reports of bucs going after an offensive FA?

  97. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

Wow, Sproles for 14 mil, only 6 guaranteed?

If we re-sign Caddy, it better be for less than half that, cause Sproles is at LEAST twice as explosive as Williams…

  98. Dan Says:

profootballtalk released what their insiders say:

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/07/28/bucs-arent-werent-chasing-nnamdi/

  99. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Dominik’s not teasing anyone. PFT just quoted sources saying that mention of the Bucs in relation to Asomugha was all just a smokescreen by parties trying to drive up the price. A source close to the negotiations said the Bucs aren’t and never were in the mix for Asomugha. Sorry, but Sapp is absolutely correct.

  100. Anthony Says:

John Clayton just said they’re in

  101. Dan Says:

    pics or it didnt happen

  102. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

    FLBoyinDallas,

Quoting an anonymous source doesn’t make it reliable. PFT isn’t the end all/be all in breaking football news.

  103. Wienaman Says:

Davin Joseph agrees to 7 years, $53 million, $19 mill guaranteed! WOOO

  104. Dan Says:

heres my theory! dominik drives up prices of players who have the same agent as someone he is trying to negotiate with! the agent gets more money when said player finally signs… AND gives dom a better deal with said player already on the team (davin joseph, barret ruud)

  105. Macabee Says:

I’m a big Dom supporter, but I must admit these attempts to “jump a canyon in two quantum leaps” appears to be ending in a series of on-time failures. I’m sure that the Bucs are not playing some type of charade, or as someone has described it – a tease. I don’t know if Dominik is snakebit from past deals that went south and is structuring deals with so many outs and conditions, that players are being scared off. Whatever it is, he needs to either state emphatically that we will not be a meaningful player in FA this year (and maybe he has and we’re refusing to believe him because they have so much money to spend) or go to the mat and win one by refusing to lose! By continuing what appears to be foreplay without closing the deal will encourage the Hoi Polloi to accuse them of amatuerism and at worst, incompetence.

  106. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

    We signed a Punter??

    AdamSchefter Adam Schefter
Big night in Tampa Bay. Bucs reach agreements with RG Davin Joseph (7 years), RT Jeremy Trueblood (2 years) and P Michael Koenen (6 years).

  107. Patrick Says:

For god’s sake we don’t need to waste money on a punter just use the one we have.

  108. Nate Says:

Hate to say I told ya so.. I know its not a done deal.. But they said you cant have enuff cornerbacks..

  109. Mauha Deeb Says:

@Patrick Our PUNTERS(big plural there) were terrible last year. A team with a garbage punter is an opponent offense with great field position.

  110. Andrew Martinez Says:

nhamdi is a good fit for the bucs, and i no we already hav good cb’
s but u got to look at the big picture here, barber is getting old and might retire next year and there is a possiblity talib might not be in the bucs next year or even this year, and plus our young cb’s won’t be able to stop very good wr’s this season or even the next season

  111. tommy Says:

i still say we address the middle line backer position….if not ruud than who, not a rookie, not there!!! make a move mark please!!! and that thomas dude still sucks!!! GO BUCS!!!!!!!!

  112. Dan Says:

i guess what is important is how good nnamdi thinks the fit is with the bucs

    can i suggest this?

while taanard and or grim get back into playing shape/healed up from injury respectively

nnamdi and talib at corner with Barber playing safety? they talked about it alot last year dont know that they did it that much.

  113. Mauha Deeb Says:

@Dan Tanard isn’t injured. He has been suspended for the wacky tobaccky.

As far as Ronde playing safety, ain’t gonna happen. Grimm is healthy, Sean Jones is still employed, Ahmad Black was just signed, and Tanard will be around after week 4. Too many quality safeties to play Barber out of position. Besides, Barber is good at that spot.

Lets not try and fix a wagon wheel that isn’t broken.

  114. Dan Says:

which is why i said playing shape for him and healed up for grim i thought the ‘respectively’ might have sorted that out… but i probably used it wrong.

last i heard said was that Grimm was at 80 percent, still sore and something about them putting a plate in (sounded future tense but could have meant past tense) . And i remember barber saying they did use him in some packages at safety last year and many announcers talked about it being something they did. so that leaves sean jones and… a rookie till either one of the other two are at 100 percent. (or playing a less than 100 percent player slowing down the recovery process) i was really just thinking aloud we do (would) have depth at corner for barber to play safety (esp if Nnamdi comes to town) and it would only be until Grimm T-jack or Black get the go ahead

    and just speculation

  115. Dan Says:

    and the eagles got him
