Derrick Brooks Concerned About Josh Freeman

July 19th, 2011

It’s a level playing field across the NFL when it comes to young players missing out on critical offseason development time.

The challenge/problem f0r the Bucs is the they have more young players than most, if not all teams. Bucs icon Derrick Brooks is concerned about the young Bucs, including Josh Freeman, so he explained on The Dan Sileo Show yesterday on WDAE-AM 620.

“Now that he’s a marked man, teams are going to wire in on him,” Brooks said of Freeman. “He’s the focal point of the offense. He was not coached from that second year to that third year. He missed out on that. How will he respond? He’s doing a great job, and I talk to Josh quite a bit, you know, from a leadership standpoint to make sure that he’s doing those things. But when it comes to those Xs and Os, you can not replace coaching.”

Who is Joe to argue with Brooks. And it is a sad truth many Bucs fans want to ignore: The young club, especially one relying on impact play from rookies and second-year guys on the defensive line, has lost a lot valuable coaching time.

However, Joe’s keeping a positive mindset. The Bucs open with the Lions who are extraordinarily young, as well. And Joe’s optimistic Raheem Morris will find a way to make up for lost time.

I’m concerned. I’m concerned about the total lack of an off-season. The total lack of respect shown season ticket holders, the total disregard for fans who will still pay top dollar for a weak product in even weaker exhibition games while having yet another home game stolen so the NFL can play in London.

I really resent all this crap, this ASININE lockout and how the fans are being lied to, used and disrespected.

But I’ll go to the games of course. Those bastards know that I and many many more love the damn game to much to give it up.

As for Josh, he’ll thrive under the gun IMO. A future HOFer in pewter.

  2. Gary Says:

I’m not worried about Josh, other young guys like Blount is another story.

Brooks is right that the going will be tougher for Josh this season because everyone now knows it begins and ends with him, but Josh is up to the challenge.

  3. Fish Says:

Agree, Garv. Blount and some of the other raw rookies from last year will suffer the most.

I will say that at least there aren’t any major changes in our philosophy or game plan, so that will help. Most of the coaches are the same, minus the D-line, but now we have 2 of those guys and they’re apparently awesome.

I think we’ll be ok. Every team is going to be a little sloppy off the bat.

  4. Hire Greg Olson! Says:

Take it easy, Garv. Bucs training camp still isn’t scheduled to start for two weeks. How are we missing a whole offseason?

I love all these self-righteous fans that are bitching and moaning because of the emotional trauma they’ve endured from missing OTAs.

  5. Tommy Boy Says:

Brooks taught us that greatness overcomes adversity. I believe Freeman has greatness in him. I’m not worried about Freeman.

  6. OAR Says:

Funny, Sapp says MVP and Brooks says he’s concerned!

  7. OAR Says:

    Hire
While I understand your point, we are missing a whole/entire off-season. Those OTAs are important to coaches/players and playbooks, especially when we have new line coaches and so many two year and rookies players. If they only had the training camp as preparation, there would be no need for even having OTAs exist and probally would be playing some crappy ball!

  8. Mauha Deeb Says:

There are many more people that will be on the field come Sunday that I will be worried about far more than Freeman.

  9. Fernando Says:

    Do I detect bitterness?..
