Mark Dominik Believes In Gerald McCoy

May 23rd, 2011

Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik has a lot of cash invested in Gerald McCoy, Brian Price and to a lesser degree Roy Miller.

With so much cash tied up in the three and the Bucs sack totals from its defensive line last season slightly better than embarrassing, it’s not a shock that Dominik loaded up on defensive ends partially in a way to help GMC, Price and Miller flush out their talents.

This has not been lost on GMC who told Jake Trotter of The Oklahoman that the Bucs needed to upgrade their defensive ends, and GMC is grateful.

You have to be excited about Tampa’s draft. Looks like you’re getting some help up front (the Buccaneers drafted defensive ends Adrian Clayborn and Da’Quan Bowers with their first two picks).

“I loved that our GM and head coach trusted not just me, but the rest of the defense enough to go get two D-ends to help us up front. That means they knew there was a need there. They believe in us. They believe that if we get two more guys to help, we’ll be real good.”

Yes, Dominik may trust GMC, Price and Miller but the NFL is also a business. If GMC, Price and Miller never improve or develop, it’s not out of the question that Dominik may have to answer some pointed questions from Team Glazer as to Dominik’s investment with their money.

It’s a smart move by Dominik, both fiscally and football-wise. The fact that Miller terribly regressed last year and that GMC finally started to improve when he publicly stated he was going to quit listening to former defensive line coach Todd Wash is a significant reason why Wash is no longer under the employ of Team Glazer.

Just ting to see how this young men develop with the new coaches. I think it’s gonna be fun to watch!

  2. Macabee Says:

McCoy needs to come back bigger, stronger, meaner and nastier. Big Frank Okam did not play like he is going to be content to sit on the bench. I like McCoy too, but I want the best man to play.

  3. Patrick Says:

This D-line has the potental to be one of the great ones. The talent together with the new two defense line coaches well you just have to be excited about that.

  4. Architek Says:

McCoy is going to just as productive and explosive as we expect. We had to upgrade the talent around him. I don’t think the Suh would have been as dominant last year if he were in Tampa with these D-lineman. The DET line was WAAAAy better that ours. GMC will be just fine!

  5. Capt.Tim Says:

The Detroit line was waaaay better, and The Lions didn’t have to play a 3-3-5 to protect it’s secondary. Hard for anyone to dominate as a DE on a 3 man line, which is what McCoy played mostly last year!

  6. Matt Says:

Don’t expect miracles this year folks.

The lockout is robbing our DLine from meeting with and being coached up by their (finally good) coaches. I really think these new coaches can do wonders from our guys.

The problem is they won’t have a chance to this year when they don’t meet them until August. That, coupled with having basically three rookies (Price included), one 2nd year guy, and one third year guy means it’ll be 2012 before these guys really turn it on.

Mccoy is not too bright. Thanking the team for upgrading the end position in the draft says 2 things: 1) that gmc is saying that styles and moore suck ( which will piss them off; and 2) that he blames styles, moore and crowder for his BAD 2010 – considered a punk thing to say in the locker room.

Okam played well, and much better than Gerald with the same ends. McCoy is just not very good right now, admit it folks.

Matt, I know you’re right. I don’t want to admit it , but the new coaches needed an offseason to start to have an impact. The Godell gang of fan last owners have really hurt the chance of seeing the young Defensive guys blow up this year. Maybe i’ll boycott the season, and try again next year!!

I just fell out of my chair laughing when I read this statement coming from Thomas! What do you know about being in a locker room? You should go on tour with your comedic skills.

  10. Big Marlon B Says:

Wow 6 comments were made before Thomas showed up with his incredibly predictable McCoy bashing. I am amazed it took that long, you should be disappointed you let 6 people get a word in before you could. I guess the beastiality photo shoot went a little over schedule.

GMC played beter last year than any Bucs DT in the past 3 years. I don’t think he is going anywhere soon even if he doesn’t develop into a monster. Par is way better than what we’ve had the past few years.
