Gerald McCoy The Drummer

May 21st, 2011

Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is known for his football skills.

Who knew he was a drummer?

Seems as though GMC was a drummer in his high school band back in Oklahoma City. So he dropped in this week to drop cash on the band and played drums at a high school assembly with his former high school band.

Apparently, the gift and appearance by GMC at his old high school was a surprise, per Scott Wright of The Oklahoman.

In the video below, GMC talks about being a drummer and how both football and music got him out of his environment.

The world didn’t end!! I’ll get to see Bucs football again!!!

    LOL JK

  2. MichiganBucsFan Says:

I think the headline should read “Gerald McCoy, the Little Drummer Boy”

but that’s just my constructive criticism, take it how you will Joe

  3. Espo Says:

Now we almost have a complete band with Da’Quan Bowers on the guitar.

  4. Joe Says:

    Espo:

That’s what Joe was thinking. 🙂

    MichiganBucsFan:

    Not cool.

  6. MichiganBucsFan Says:

    lol, sry

  7. Dave Says:

    Bowers = Guitar
    McCoy = Drums

I figure they just need a lead singer because just about anyone can learn to play bass!

  8. Dave Says:

    Back to football:

Can not wait to see McCoy, Price, Bowers, and Clayborne together on the line. They could be DOMINANT!!

Every one of them is known as a player who causes disruption

  9. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Who is McCoy destroying in that photo?

  10. espo Says:

#5 should be our lead singer its only appropriate.

  11. espo Says:

    Trueblood will be our roadie

  12. Capt.Tim Says:

Dave, as a former professional Bass player- kiss my butt! The greatest popular musician on the planet- Sting- is a Bass player. Go educate your self, Neanderthal!

  13. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Not to start trouble here, but Sting’s a great vocalist and that’s how he got his fame. Not for his bass playing skills.

  14. Patrick Says:

are you all talking about when he was with the police or as a solo vocalist?

  15. MichiganBucsFan Says:

If there’s a band Freeman can’t be the singer. You’ve got McCoy and Bowers, so Clayborn and Price gotta round it out. The whole defensive line would be a band together.

  16. Joe Says:

    >>> The greatest popular musician on the planet- Sting <<<

    Eddie Van Halen laughs.

It looks like Zuttah to me

I wish that he would have stuck to drumming. I guess the football coach wasn’t looking for a defensive tackle to demonstrate the 3 yard backpedal, how to land on your back without serious injury, how to be completely neutralized by an O-lineman, and GMC’s mastered move: how to let the O-Lineman drive you out of your gap so that the running back has a huge interior hole to run through.

This just in: Apparently, all of those reports of GMC working hard every day rehabbing his hurt bicep (when not occasionally standing idly by to tweet while a woman gets beaten by a man) out in CAlifornia were exaggerated.

  19. thomas 2.2 Says:

    Big Marlon:
What you didn’t see was the running back just passed behind GMC for another huge gain out of GMC’s gap.

I can still see Mike Shanahan calling in the plays to McNabb and GRossman: “find 93 and hand the ball to Torrain and have him run to 93’s gap, play-after-play” – guaranteed NFL rushing record at halftime. The only flaw: GMC got hurt and replaced and for some idiotic reason the skins threw the ball more than zero times in that game.

    Captain,

My vote for best base player: Flea, Red Hot Chili Peppers

  21. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Thomas,
Serious question – do you ever get sick of yourself and just want to knock yourself out? You have that effect on everyone else, so I was just wondering.

  22. grasshopp427er Says:

rah on bass..ronde on vocals. we’ll call it “the chest bump and run experiment”

    some ideas for songs:

    we got 5 on it
    (pistol) whip it good
    blame it on the ruud
my knee hurts, my speech stinks
    super bowl shuffle!

  23. espo Says:

You guys are all old and listen to lame music. Just wanted to point that out.

  24. m.wesley Says:

yep Thomas Ryan Torain 15 rushes121yards 4 first downs on running plays outside the tackle is that what you keep talking about?

  25. Capt.Tim Says:

Every year there is a large Jass festival in Sweden. Sting is a regular, where he has frequently been voted in the Virtuoso class in electric Bass, acoustic Bass. Guitar, Piano, and a variety of rarer instrumments, such ashes harpsichord and Dulcimer. Of any musician to achieve Fame in popular music( I.e- Rock, pop, etc) sting has unquestionably become the most widely accredited ” serious Musician”.

He states that his dedication to become a classically skilled Musician of such deversity stems back to his day as front man for the police, when their agent frequently stated that he thought Sting’s skills as a bassist were inadequate. No matter how much outside popularity he recieved

    Just goes to show ya

  26. bucthis Says:

Thomas, as far as Mccoy is concerned, he was playing at a high level when he got hurt. It could be do to the lack of veteran leadership and quality on the defensive line that he put to much on himself, he certainly doesn’t lack in the skills to be a great lineman and a very high pick in any draft year.

  27. Capt.Tim Says:

It’s the Montreux Jazz festival- he headlined last year, Appearing there along With Santana, George Benson, and many others. Sting has been featured there for 15 years or more

Flea Rocks! Big fan of Bruce Hill- iron Maiden for pure technique. The Bass players for Greenday and U2 are also guys I admire.

And Bass players never have lock outs!!

  28. Big Marlon B Says:

If we are on the topic of talented bassists, u are going to have to put Les Claypool from Primus right up near the top of that list. Dude is just unreal, he truly is on a level of his own.

  29. Patrick Says:

    Other great bass players:

Paul McCartney- Beatles (but of course all the beatles were great), Cliff Williams-AC/DC, and John Paul Jones of AC/DC.

    @Capt. Tim

I love the RHCP’s and Flea is a great bass player too! I like pretty much all rock bands ranging from the 60’s to today, but I think the classics is where it’s at! Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Beatles, and Boston are some of my favorite bands

  30. Patrick Says:

*John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin* i meant

    @bucthis:
If you mean that he was playing like T Jax or Alex Magee by saying that he was “playing at a high level” that may be possible. Because in no other form of the phrase was he playing football at a high level. He had 1 good game, 1.5 decent games and was a liability in nearly every other.

I have brought up the 2nd critical Atlanta game at home late in the season as an example of why this playing good late in the season argument is crap; “officially” GMC did not appear on the stat sheet despite playing the entire game.

  33. BigMacAttack Says:

    Music???

    Bass: Les Claypool – Primus

    Guitar: Dimebag Darrell – Pantera

    Drums: Tony Royster Jr.

Vocals: Big Daddy Rich – Texas Hippie Coalition

  34. BigMacAttack Says:

My Favorite Guitarist Ever: Stevie Ray Vaughn

My Favorite Bassist Ever: Stanley Clark

    Best Band Ever: Metallica

  35. Capt.Tim Says:

I grew up playing rifts by Stanely Clarke and Joco Pastorius! Man, I miss the Band Days!

And Joe, I was referring to Rock Muscians who had become famous musicians in the Jazz/ Classical fields as well. As far as great Rock Guitarist, Eddie has gotta be at the top, with Jimmy Page and My favorite, Jimi Hendrix!

Espo- yer right, bunch of old guys, but all the young musicians they talk to today, list the same influences you see here!

JoeBucFan already has great football debates, and lovelies in Bikinis, now talking about Great Bass players! We get a good Firearm post, plus a tequila column, and this place will have all my passions at one stop! It don’t get better than that:)

  36. Joe Says:

Joe’s favorite two bass players were/are John Entwhistle and John Paul Jones.

  37. Capt.Tim Says:

Old school list of all time favorites

    Lead guitar- Jimi Hendrix
    Bass- Geezer Butler- Black Sabbath
    Drums- John Bonham- Led Zepplin
    Vocalist- Paul Stanley- Kiss

  38. Capt.Tim Says:

Great picks Joe! Entwistle did some revolutionary stuff with The Who. He’s another guy I spent alot of time listening to!

  39. Espo Says:

Tim, I know. Those you mentioned set the bar pretty high, I have to admit.
