Who’s Been To One Buc And Why?
April 18th, 2011In a public service to Bucs fans, draft guru Justin “The Commish” Pawlowski summed up what draft hopefuls the Bucs have worked out and what it might all mean.
It’s on The Commish’s must-read draft page on 620wdae.com. Click the link and scroll down.
Here’s his snippet on linebackers officially on the Bucs radar:
Fresno State – Chris Carter
North Carolina – Quan Sturdivant
Georgia – Akeem Dent
*Miami – Colin McCarthy
UCLA – Akeem Ayers
There’s not one doubt in my mind that the Bucs are focussed on drafting at least one linebacker in this year’s draft. Like Justin Houston, I think Akeem Ayers is a backup plan if the top DEs are off the board. The Bucs could either draft them at 20 or trade back and possibly still get one of the 2. The other linebackers here just show that the Bucs are indeed spending time and money scouting linebackers this year. Chris Carter would be good value in the 3rd round, but it wouldn’t shock me if the Bucs grabbed him in the 2nd round if they really like him.

Ahh, just 10 days until Day 1 of the draft. Joe is salivating. Surely the Bucs will take a linebacker early with the uncertainty of four unrestricted free agent linebackers currently on their roster.
Hopefully a small miracle will resolve the labor mess so these new Bucs will be sweating their butts off shorts at One Buc Palace in early May.

Add Markell Carter to the list…

Trade back the first and still could get Houston or Ayers plus an extra pick. Then pick up Sheard with our 2nd rounder and Acho with the extra pick.

If Kerrigan, Bowers, Clayborne, Jordan, Quinn, and Watt are gone by pick 20 they SHOULD trade down to the Steelers. Pitt wants Pouncey and the bucs could pick up and extra 3rd.
This would ensure them getting a DE in round 1 or 2 AND Romeus in round 3 AND hopefully a OLB (Bruce Carter) and still have another 3rd for OT or CB or RB. They can grab Nate Irving MLB in round 4 or take him in the 3rd if they feel they have to.
Whatever happens, Dominick has earned my trust for this draft.
The thing is, with no free agency period on the immediate horizon, it might make trades pretty limited this year.
Personally, I like the mock draft I did that had them taking:
1 Ryan Kerrigan DE Purdue — Traded 3rd to move up to get him from Texans
2 Bruce Carter OLB UNC — Closest thing to Brooks in a over a decade
4 Ahmad Black SS UF — Traded Ruud for Texans 4th (part of Kerrigan trade) – Had to take Black, too good a value here
4 Nate Irving ILB NC St — Traded Josh Johnson for 49ers 4th – – He will compete with McKenzie for long term MLB
4 DeMarcus Love OT Ark — Great value. Big guy who can play RT or OG
5 Ricky Elmore DE AZ — Wanted Romeus, but was gone in 3rd. Elmore is a high motor guy who makes plays
6 Derrick Locke RB Kentucky — Surprised he was here in the 6th. Can be the change of pace back if Huggins proves to be a health risk
7 Tyrod Taylor QB Va Tech — project 3rd stringer with great athleticism
This was done before the Talib incident otherwise probably would have went CB instead of Black in 4th.
Ironic that I have been harping on Greg Romeus and then in my mock it did not work out for me to get him. Oh well, that’s the way it goes.

No way would I move up 9 spots to take Kerrigan. I like him just fine at 20, but it would be madness to move up to 11 for anyone but Quinn.

I would love to grab Davon House and use a 3rd on another DE or Kendall Hunter. I would not be upset with using a 2nd on Carter if thats who they like and will make flourish in our system.

Agree nomving up nine spoits for anyone but Quinn isn’t necessary. Hopefully this signals that we’re moving on from Ruud. I still think Hayes and Black can ball if the right situation presents itself, ruud can’t however.

meh,
you are totally correct. Moving up for Kerrigan would be crazy. i’m personally a fan of trading JJ, #20, and a 4th next year to move up to #7 and get Quinn. IF we are so focused on getting a DE, why not get the best one too come out since Mario Williams. IF somehow we could get Quinn in the 1st and draft Bruce Carter in the 2nd. Our front 7 would be nasty.

If we can’t move up, then we need to move down to the bottom of the 1st or start of the 2nd and draft Mikel leshoure. I know we have Blount and several other pressing needs. But our team is built with Offense and hopes that our D gets a couple stops. But it is obvious we are no longer the Defense first team anymore.
You need two great RB’s in this league and I personally believe Leshoure will be the best RB in this class. Pair him with Blount and Def. Coordinators will not be able to prepare for our new Offense. We still need one more solid WR and OT in this draft as well.
RB,WR,OT,DE,WLB,MLB,CB is what we need to address in the draft and FA. Not in that order, but that is our biggest holes.

I just hope we stay away from Daquan Bowers even if he is there at pick 20. 1 year wonder and bad knee, no thank you!!! Clemson DE’s are the same make up, quick in college and not strong enough for the pros.

@Dave – pretty good mock but but one big problem, you can’t trade a free agent. Everyboby wants to get rid of Ruud, but he’s an unrestricted free agent and can’t be traded. He’s free to go wherever he wants to.

Macabee, I’ve been waiting to get home and post that all day. Ruud can’t be traded, he’s not under contract with the team. Neither can Black or Joseph or Caddy. JJ can be traded, he still has a year left on his deal with us. That is, if the CBA is done before the draft. If not, the nobody can be traded during the draft. Only draft choices can be traded if there is no CBA. That drives me crazy seeing all this about trading free agent players and trades involving players when there’s still no CBA.
Hmm… I wonder if that’s why they call it a “mock” draft, because you lay it out there and people mock you for putting in things that can never happen.

Trading back from 20 and adding another pick sounds really good right about now. Man, we could triple up on LBs. That would be sweet.
