What Bucs Fans Should Look For At Senior Bowl
January 28th, 2011Regular readers of Joe who subscribed to Joe’s draft coverage the past two years know just the type of unmatched draft coverage Joe’s good friend Justin Pawlowski, the sometimes host of the critically-acclaimed “Blitz” on WDAE-AM 620, can deliver with articles, podcasts and chats.
This year, Joe’s draft coverage will be free. Free Joe tells you!
To whet one’s appetite for Joe’s draft coverage, Justin has offered some tidbits on what Bucs fans should monitor during Saturday’s telecast of the Senior Bowl, broadcast live on the NFL Network with Mike Mayock as analyst. It can be seen on all cable carriers known to be found in real men’s living rooms.
Here is one player Justin suggests Bucs fans should pay particular attention to tomorrow: Jeremy Beal, a defensive end from Oklahoma.
Beal is slightly undersized and can get engulfed by bigger and more physical offensive linemen. One thing the Bucs will like from Beal is his work ethic, leadership, and competition level. Beal might be a nice grab for the Bucs in the 2nd round.
Sound familiar? Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik is very big on character. Sounds like a Dominik-kinda guy to Joe. Think him and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy could work together?
Joe also believes that with the draft stocked with defensive ends, the Bucs will go after a linebacker in the first round because the Bucs can get better value there, and then draft a pair of defensive ends in the later rounds.

We’ll see him play Saturday, but he has had a very poor weak of Senior Bowl practice. He has been completely engulfed by larger offensive tackles and has gotten pancaked often in pass rush. Some are saying he might even have to move to outside linebacker, which we could use him at, but so far he has not looked like an NFL defensive end in my opinion.

***poor week

I loved his college production (which counts more than anything), but he got OWNED in just about every 1 on 1 drill this week. Granted, hes on the North squad, who have an amazing talent at o-line. But it was kind of disheartening too see him struggle against top tier tackles, i was hoping for a better showing to confirm my assessment that he would be a good DE in the NFL.
January 28th, 2011 at 9:24 am
Another non first round DE that we could snag in the 2nd would be Sam Acho. He has not had the flashiest senior bowl, but had great college production @ Texas, keep an eye on him. Allen Bailey is also free falling, because he is really stiff and his athleticism isn’t transferring to the field, if coached up he might be a steal in the 2nd.

Every site I’ve seen has said nothing but bad things about Beal. He came in at 6’1″ instead of 6’3″ and looked sloppy at 268lbs. He has looked horrible at LB and gotten beat consistently at DE. I’ve read over and over that he doesn’t have a spot in the NFL.
I liked him in college, but to hear all seven of the sites I follow say that he has been absolutely horrible this week against top competition makes me wanna pass. If we do take him, it shouldn’t be until the 4th round or later.

I agree guys. This guy may be the nicest guy in the world but his stock has dropped in my opinion after this week of Senior Bowl practice. Agree with JDouble! If he’s there in the 4th round, he might be worth picking.

Off topic here guys but FYI. Freeman has a 15 minute interview on ESPN’s podcast show Football Today. Talks about his early career, work ethic, and other tidbits of franchise goodness. It’s a couple days old but is in the archives list. I recommend a listen even if it is ESPN!
January 28th, 2011 at 10:11 am
Sam Acho is a smaller version of Jeremy Beal. Lacks the athleticism to make the move to OLB, but lacks the size, quickness, and strength to be a DE. Another guy I liked in college that doesn’t project well in the NFL. Another 4th round or later guy imo.
January 28th, 2011 at 10:12 am
if we pick a lb at 20 in this draft we’d probably be getting about -15 or -20 value.
January 28th, 2011 at 10:22 am
beal/acho = garbage…. if we are going to select a DE in the later rounds we should give Greg Romeus a shot in the 3rd or 4th.

JDouble:
We cant get 7 1st round picks lol….
and not only 1st rounders contribute to teams… I dont know who you do “like” Id love to hear who your think we should get from rounds 1-7, because no one seems to be good enough for you.
January 28th, 2011 at 11:06 am
I agree they go after two DEs. I still like the idea of grabbing a big name DE in round 1. I like JJ WATT alot. He seems to do EVERYTHING real good. The only knock is he is not the most “athletic”…. so what. He works his asssss off, is humble and hungry. He gets after the QB with an array of moves and pure power. He is also a beast against the run. Personally, I think after Quinn he is the best DE in the draft.
I see them grabbing a LB in round 2 and then they could still get a speed rusher in round 3-4 (maybe Pitt’s Greg Romeus)
January 28th, 2011 at 11:17 am
I think maybe the issue is more about an unimpressive draft class. Get the most out of it where you can. Maybe the Bucs should trade away a pick or 2 and move up to get the best DE in the Draft. I also like the idea of trading away a pick or two for a well established DE or MLB already in the NFL. I know we have talked about Beason, but I would consider offering a package to Harbaugh and the 49’rs for Patrick Willis. He alone could elevate this defense to a whole new level. The Bucs don’t need seven players this year. They need about 3 or 4 as I see it.

Not a big fan of Beal…

BigMacAttack:
Trading for established team leaders doesn’t happen in the NFL. When was the last time it happened? Never. It doesn’t happen. Teams dont call one another and say, “Hey what is it going to take to get Josh Freeman from the Bucs?” You dont think the Vikings, Cardinals, etc don’t wish they had a young franchise QB?
Trades for malcontents, underachievers, or players that just wear their welcomes out get traded. Beason and Pat Willis certainly dont fit ANY of those categories, this isnt Madden 11 on your Xbox.

What I like about Justin’s draft coverage is that he actually understands the Bucs needs. I’ve read so many mock drafts over the years and seen the projected picks and thought to myself “these people have probably never seen a Bucs game or studied their roster, they have no clue what they are talking about”
I personally am very happy the coverage is free this year so I can get my draft coverage with a Bucs spin
Thanks for getting it free for us Joe

Like his pick of Nate Irving in the 3rd-really like that guy, and high character- instant upgrade at strong side ‘Backer. Bruce Campbell in 2nd is another upgrade at Weak side. I think Ruud is gone. If he is, then give Mckensie a shot. He was originally a 3rd round pick of the Patriots. Should be able to cover TEs and Rbs. 1st round – still think it’s Clayborn, but Ryan Kerrigan is an option if he’s there. 4th round- take a chance on Greg Romeus. Might never be the same. But if he is, he’s a great De

got no problem with those picks capt. tim. i think they also have to look very hard at building depth at the tackle position because behind penn we have question marks and trueblood is as good as gone.

Well Travis, what I would like us to do is draft solid prospects that project well in the NFL. Rather than spending our 3rd round pick on these guys that the professionals don’t think have a true spot at the next level. Like I said before, I really liked both of these guys in college, but when all the pro scouts are watching them at the senior bowl against the cream of the crop, and they all agree unanimously that they suck….I for one believe them.
I’d much rather see us get a solid LB like Nate Irving or Mason Foster, or some O-line help like John Moffit, Joe Barksdale, or Tim Barnes. If we want another DE then Greg Romeus would be a much better pick in the 3rd.
I could go on, but there are probably 15 guys I could name that would make better 3rd round picks…and this article is saying take Beal in THE 2ND! Now if Acho or Beal are there in the 4th or 5th, then sure take a chance, but in the first three rounds you are dealing with the top 100 college players. We should be able to get three solid football players.
To come out and say you provide professional draft coverage and Beal could be a solid 2nd round pick up for the Bucs, when everyone and their mom is saying Beal’s stock has plummeted at the senior bowl and he is now a 3rd-5th round pick….well I’m glad this stuff is free.

Uh, oh, The Commish has been riled up. J-Double thinks he’s Mel Kiper. I wouldn’t gitve it a 2nd thought.
You think the Bucs might take a safety in the first round and shock everyone? No way they’re banking on Sean Jones past this year.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:22 pm
SouthTampa- think they are counting on Cody Grimm(good move) and Retard Jackson( bad move). Plus Larry Asante looked very good, and Corey Lynch also. I think Ronde likes the idea of playing a little safety occasionally also. We should be ok. Buuut, almost everthing can be upgraded!
January 28th, 2011 at 5:56 pm
3months from today we find out .. I love how everyone is already riled up .. Even when we dont know a whole lot about all the guys
Aldon Smith gets a lot of hype .. When I watch the film .. He just doesnt stand out .. But what do I know
1. Kerrigan
2. Watt
3. Just Houston
That is my wishlist .. Who knows who will be better

i love u morons that keep saying u hope they get LB Bruce Campbell in the 2nd round, he would be an upgrade at WLB etc…im pretty sure its Bruce Carter (North Carolina) ur referring to.
its hard to take u seriously if u dont even know the name of the guy u want.
January 28th, 2011 at 9:20 pm
jvato24 I feel the same about Aldon Smith. I’ve watched 5 or 6 of his games and his highlight videos. All I see is another Gaines Adams with one outside speed rush move that will end up 5 yards behind the QB all the time. He doesn’t have an inside move, doesn’t use his hands to disengage, and lacks strength. Most of his sacks came from weak college QBs that hold onto the ball way to long.
I hope we stay away from Aldon. The only Aldon I like is the guy from Good Eats.
In the 1st round I like Kerrigan, Jordon, Watt, and Houston. I also like Quinn of course, but he’s almost certainly a top 10 pick.
January 28th, 2011 at 11:22 pm
I don’t know first hand because I don’t have NFL Network and haven’t been able to watch the Senior Bowl practice, but I’ve read on multiple sites that Beal looked “sloppy” at 268lbs. It almost sounds like he let himself go a little bit. Could be why he has struggled so much too, but it doesn’t look good for him that he didn’t take the Senior Bowl serious enough to be in tip top shape.
I liked Beal a lot and was personally very disappointed to here he was looking sloppy and has completely been ineffective this week.
Brooks Reed is another undersized DE that I like though, and I’ve read quite a few good things about him this week. I thought he’d have to be an OLB in the NFL, but from the sounds of it he has been doing well at DE this week.

Joe here,
Beal sure didn’t look “sloppy” on what Joe saw from him on NFL Network. There was a segment that had Cameron Jordan looking like an idiot hitting the quarterback in practice and getting a schooling from Marvin Lewis. …Raheem was in heated conversation with Lewis just before that was shown, although it wasn’t clear whether the video was cut and the timetable was different. …A guy like Beal plays well today and he’s back being discussed as a 2nd rounder again. So variable three months out.
