One More Year For Mark Dominik
January 10th, 2011The rock star general manager’s tour has at least one more year to go in Tampa.
Roy Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune, has made the call on TBO.com that Team Glazer has picked up a one-year option on Mark Dominik’s contract.
No stunning news there, but perhaps it’s suprsing Dominik did not get an extention.
Joe will have more on this through the day.

The big question is: Why only a year?
Was Dominik angling for more money after next year? Or were the Glazers gun shy?
Or was the additional contract just an option year on the original one and the two sides just decided to put off a bigger contract until after the CBA is resolved? (Hint: Likely)

As an upcoming GM I would not be surprised if Dominik only wanted 1 year. Especially if he feels McCoy, Lewis, Price, Blount, Williams, Benn, Grimm, etc… are going to progress even more like they should next year.
As far as the Glazers go, I would think it is a work in progress and 1 more year might be all they want to offer at this point.
Not saying that is what I would do, personally I think Raheem and Mark should have gotten 3 years each, but I can understand it from both sides.

Glazers just playing it safe for next year with all the uncertainty internal and external to the org. No doubt will give lucrative extensions to both Dom and Rah if they continue progress.

Not stunned by this. They had the 1 year option on the table and took it. Forget that a new CBA may or may not get done, if they thought that much of him they should have given him a new 3 year deal. The NFL business will go forward, with the combine, draft etc so why not give this guy his due? If he get Exec of the Year the owners just saved themselves a boat load of cash by picking up the option year at a low dollar.

Picking up a one year option does not mean that they can’t give an extension at a later date. It just means that they picked up the option.
No sense trying to read more into it than what it is.

d-money said it right… just relax on this one folks the Glaziers will not let him go.

Good news but in my opinion the Glazers needed to extend this guys contract by more than a year. My hope is they exercised his 1-year option so they know they have him and start working on a nice extension. It is well deserved and I will be highly upset if we lose him in the long run.

He and Raheem will get new extentions once the CBA is in place and football resumes accordingly.

this will get taken care of after the draft and or new cba is done. rah and dom arent going anywhere and im sure those two would rather worry about scouting for the draft over working out a contract right now. ownership isnt letting these two go.

One thing we have all learned is that the Glazers are far better at managing their affairs than any of us are at prognosticating them. It should be evident that they are focused on a longterm play-off contention team. They will not let Dominik get away. If they chose one year, then they know they will have to pony up big next year to keep him, and they should.

The Glazers didn’t become gazillionaires by ignoring the corporate climate surrounding their investments.
It’s never good enough for some people. They always have to look for the negative…

Sometimes I think you guys have never worked with any kind of contract. If there is an option clause why would you offer more money and a long term deal? By exercising the option they have another year to work out the long term deal, when there are no more options in the contract it is time to renegotiate. It would not make a great deal of business sense to say, let’s give this guy a 5 year deal worth 25 Mil when you hold an option on him for a smaller amount of money. Typically the option comes with a raise, and is a show of support for what they have done. Both Morris and Dom are working within the contract that they signed, which is what they should be doing.

I agree with McBuc and DMoney, they have all next year to hammer out a new deal.
