The Cursed Class Of 2007 (Revisited)

The news yesterday of the Bucs letting Sabby go brought back to mind for Joe the cursed draft class of 2007.
Of the Bucs nine players taken in that draft, only two — two! — are currently on the Bucs roster and a third is playing with the Rams, Kenneth Darby.
Just take a look at the Bucs cursed class of 2007:
First round: Gaines Adams, dead.
Second round: Arron Sears, unable to play.
Second round: Sabby, out of work.
Third round: Quincy Black, starting but with mixed results.
Fourth round: Tanard Jackson, gifted but has pretty much smoked his way out of the league.
Fifth round: Greg Peterson, out of work.
Sixth round: Adam Hayward, backup.
Seventh round: Chris Denman, out of work.
Seventh round: Marcus Hamilton, out of work.
Seventh round: Kenneth Darby, playing for the Rams.
Folks, that’s downright miserable. And people actually wonder why Bruce Almighty and Chucky were given their walking papers by Team Glazer, and Chucky’s so desperate to get back into coaching he’s rumored to be flirting with the Canes as Joe types this very post.

Would be funny if he went to Miami. Most Miami fans are the type who hated Gruden coaching the Bucs.
So I would like to see him go to Miami for karma purposes alone. 🙂

Quincy Black the LB that blitzes the most and has 2 sacks for his carrer. Last time this was posted someone said Black was better tahn Hayes. Now I am not saying Hayes is all pro but he has had more Forced Fumbles big hits along with a pick 6. I dont beleive in Black at all would love to see more Watson and Hayward .

I left off the 6th round punter cause he was the only bust so far. Amazing amount of young talent aquired this year. Amazing.

I would love to see Gruden go to the Canes, his shtick might be better suited to boys rather than grown men. If he can’t do it in college, we will have further proof of his overly hyped coaching skills.

Griden does great with vets, but name me one young guy he developed successfully….he just didn’t have the ability or patience to work with young men. Maybe his time coaching highschool has helped him in that regard.

Somehow I dont think Gruden is “desperate” to do anything and will be heavily courted this upcoming off season. That being said, I too was ready for him to move on.

Please remember the salary cap hell Mckay left us in and loss of 4 first and 2 second round picks with the addition of Gru and key. This was an all or nothing crapshoot that paid off! Gru did what he could do under those financial and draft handicaps.

Atrain: The 2007 draft class was well after the team lost those draft choices and recovered from salary cap nightmares. We were all willing to give him a pass for 2003 to 2005 (maybe even 2006) in exchange for the Super Bowl win. But continued horrible drafts and few young players coming in for 2007 and 2008 that were worth anything at all… that’s why he doesn’t continue to get a break. Love him for what he did early, glad he’s gone for what he did after.
HGO: McKenzie was signed a while ago, been on the practice squad like 3 or 4 weeks now if I remember correctly.

BamBam – I guess from Gruden’s perspective who cared about the draft right? I mean they were just unproven college kids and if I recall correctly Jon didn’t like to play rookies AT ALL.
Still doesn’t excuse the CRAP that Allen drafted – he really was a POW; knew how to manipulate the salary cap hell that McKay left the Bucs in but talent evaluator? Please Allen wouldn’t know talent if it punched him in the face.

derf – I can’t even argue with the salary cap hell we were in at the time. We had to sign players like Brooks, Lynch, Sapp, Alstott and bring in guys like Brad Johnson, Keyshawn, Jerevicious, etc. just to win that Super Bowl. There’s a reason we were in cap hell, and it was WELL worth it. It took a couple years to reverse that and the team was old and cheap at that point. Competitive enough to MAYBE make the playoffs each year, but never good enough to contend for another title.
Thanks for the Super Bowl, now let’s move on. I like the young group we’ve got, even though they’re “cheap” because they’re young and a lot of them were picked up off waivers or practice squads or drafted in the mid to late rounds. They won’t be cheap in a couple years when we have to re-sign them.

Lets see this 2010 draft list in three years, just to be fair. Dont get me wrong, I agree they seem talented, but lets give them a year or two and see where/how they are playing.

I’m not saying all the guys on that list will be great, but they are all promising young talent, and out of 22 you’d have to think atleast 10 of those guys will work ouit for us. Ten would still be huge.

McKenzie was signed to the PS about a month ago.
And as far as Gruden going to Miami, I think it would be good for him. I think before he comes back to the NFL he should coach some college and try to improve his ability to mentor and develope young men. It was his biggest weakness. If he can improve that part of his coaching, he could eventually come back and be a great NFL coach. If he comes back right now I have a feeling he’ll continue to coach all veteran teams and run into the same problems of not building for the future.

If you want to be mad at someone for that I’d start with Tony Dungy. He squandered a Super Bowl caliber defense for at least 4 years.
We should be kissing Gruden’s feet that he was able to come in and get the one he did.

You have to wait until 2012 to see if they are still on the roster.
How are you counting 4 guys from 2009’s draft?
And yes, the punter in the 6th. So he doesn’t get on the list?

Remember, the big debate was “Do we trade the 4th pick & the 2 second rounders for the 2nd pick, thereby getting Calvin Johnson?”, & the answer, according to Bruce Allen, was no. You KNOW Gruden wanted that, but he let Monte pick Gaines, & Allen make the decision against Megatron(3 for 1, I understand, but you better be damn sure of those 3).
You go into a draft with a board, & clearly they had Gaines, Sears, & Sabby high on their board—a nice guy who didn’t seem to like football, a tackle moving to guard, imo always risky(from finesse to brute), & another guy who was a freakish athlete who isn’t that into football.
It’s why you pick football players who happen to be good athletes(Cody Grimm, & probably Gerald McCoy), as opposed to just Supermen in Shorts. & why the mantra by Dom “try to get team captains from premiere programs, because they probably LIKE football” was very smart…

I have always thought that Sabby was a reach in the second round. Or at least thats what the experts claimed post draft.

The 2010 draft, at this point, looks awesome. So sad how little talent we got in the prior drafts. Still, if you are looking for the kind of draft that can turn a franchise around, this one looks good – with the accurate Clayton warning. I believe Williams will be a beast for years… the pick I worry about is Price. And why in GOd’s name can we get a punter????

I wish you would have used the words ‘passed on’ instead of ‘dead’ with gaines, although he didn’t live up to his draft slot he was a human being and deserves to be treated as such even while he is no longer with us. The way you just list dead seems disrespectful. Love all your work, just thought it was a poor choice of words.
