Raheem Flashes Frustration With McCoy
October 18th, 2010The growing pains of the Bucs’ young defensive line have been felt by Bucs fans and coaches. But few thought the pain would be as agonizing as it’s been the past three games, with the Steelers, Bengals and Saints having their way with the D-line and running at will.
On today’s Raheem Morris Show, on WDAE-AM 620, the Bucs’ head coach, who has been markedly protective of his young players and enthusiastic about his youthful roster, showed a hint of frustration with the learning curve of his defense.
Callers pressed Morris to talk about the struggles of the run defense on multiple occasions and, after some prodding by host TJ Rives, Morris gave a candid take that included singling out Gerald McCoy.
“The other reason, which we always talk about time around here is we’re being a little too much yield signs, you know. And what I mean by that is we’re in our gaps, we’re in the right spot, and now we’re looking to see who’s supposed to be in that gap, rather than shedding the block and making the tackle. We got to go out and be better shed tacklers up front, at linebacker and in the secondary.
“Right now, I’ve got a bunch of young guys, and they are really concerned about being wrong. And I got to tell those guys, you know, ‘Don’t be afraid to achieve and go out there be your best self.’ You know, Gerald McCoy, he can take some of the reigns of him[self] a little bit. ‘Yeah I know what to do.’ That’s great. Now go out there and shed this guard and make this tackle in somebody else’s gap. Because you can do that, too. It’s not illegal.”
Morris hardly threw McCoy under the bus, but the frustration was evident. McCoy has eight tackles and no sacks in five games.
Joe gets that D-line is probably thinking way too much to be successful consistently. But if that’s really a major problem, than it should be fixable very quickly.
If the Bucs have drafted good players, their raw football instincts should take over in a hurry.

I actually enjoyed seeing that morris said that, hopefully he gets the D-line in to shape and we start to show improvement by getting sacks and TFL’s.

I came on here to apologize about being so hard on Raheem… but damn it Joe, your prose just incites people I swear.
October 18th, 2010 at 11:30 pm
He definitely didn’t throw him under the bus, as you said Joe. Still, the title should read “Raheem Flashes Frustration With Defense.” GM was just an example. Surely he’s more frustrated with Miller, after that horrible performance yesterday.

Joe here,
Buc You – Uhh, Joe thanks for the words, maybe. Joe’s just reporting on what the coach says. Basic stuff. It’s his words. As for the presentation here, well, Joe believes he knows how to deliver the info. to the fans without the stale stuff you get everywhere else.
October 18th, 2010 at 11:32 pm
Joe here,
Michael – The headline is accurate and appropriate. Joe prefers to take Raheem’s words rather than assume something else.
October 18th, 2010 at 11:35 pm
Well keep him in at DT and let him make plays. Quit movin him around Joe Maddon…
October 18th, 2010 at 11:43 pm
When all else fails, back to the best self.
I guess i misunderstood tampa two. I thought the key was staying IN your gap and everyone was collectively disciplined about it.
But, I am sure Rah knows what he is talking about. He was pretty calm and relatively lucid on his show today. The lab work is being done on the needed corrections…………………..good things are bound to happen.

I’m half joking Joe. Of course each person must control his irritations. But I do get a kick out of the mother hens trying to call you out about quoting people… it cracks me up. Raheem once said that this was the best job in the world… wonder if he still thinks that
October 18th, 2010 at 11:52 pm
And Rah doesn’t deserve this negativity from all the people coming out of the woodwork.. only Eric and Tampa2 and a few others should be allowed to be negative… everyone else well they are just overreacting

Joe
Good points. Im hearing through sports blogs in DC that Bucs are making a move for Albert Haynesworth before the upcoming trade deadline. Since his last payday he may be cheap. Not sure if its a good move but those guys need a veteran up front

Anyone else think the root of the problem is a bad D-Line coach? I would absolutely fire everyone involved with the run defense from last year on the D-Line.
Why in the world we keep Todd Wash is beyond is me. The guy has no credential and the results he has produced are garbage.
Maybe it has more to do with the schemes Raheem runs, or we just have below average players.
I still think Todd Wash is a lame duck coach just like the guy we have coaching our O-line. Both of them suck!

Haynesworth is in the doghouse here in D.C. shouldnt take much for Tampa to get him. he hates Shanahan.might not be a bad pick up to teach the young tackles how to play in the N.F.L. even if he doesnt really take them under his wing, they surley can pick something up from him just by watching what he does.
October 19th, 2010 at 8:17 am
I just cannot envision Albert haynesworth as a teacher/player. Haynesworth is all about Haynesworth, period. Bringing him in here will do nothing but make headlines for a day or 2 and make Shanahan a happier man. Our defense is bad. If the 3 stooge Glazer boys actually d want to spend money, (which I highly doubt), let them spend it on a quality DE 04 RB. I would really hate to see some of our talented young players pick up Haynesworths bad habits by watching what he does. Is that on or off the field?

First off listen to SAPP and WHITE, QUIT MOVING GMC!!!So he can play without thinking…I’m all for firing Wash and Mangurian, but not till the end of the season cause who will replace them Raheem and Olson can’t.Mangurian has ruined a once promising Oline, its not the players they would all be picked within ours if cut…Wash on the other hand is dealing with rookies and second year DTs that history shows will struggle.IF WE COULD RUN THE BALL WE WOULDN’T HAVE TO STOP THE RUN!!!
October 19th, 2010 at 8:43 am
I actually agree with Tampa2, Washington can keep Albert.
October 19th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Huh? Rah speaks like an illiterate. Did anyone understand, “we’re being a little too much yield signs, you know.” Did he make a statement or ask a rhetorical question? Mercy …

I think that Morris was stating that McCoy is trying to be a good guy, and staying in his designated area and Raheem is letting him know it is okay to cut loose in another teammates area as well.
In all fairness, I saw McCoy getting tripple-teamed out there at times. To me that means the other guys on the line are not doing their jobs.
October 19th, 2010 at 9:23 am
I agree.
As far as Wash goes, the guy is not only working with rookies in the middle, he also is getting no help on the ends. DE was not addressed in the off season, so he can only work with what he’s got.
Mangurian is easy to blame for the Oline troubles, especially with their track record of late. But let’s not forget that when they were good, they had Sears. Sears was a difference maker.

Growth is frustrating!

Joe here,
booty traps: Joe has been asked this before. Traffic us up when the Bucs win, but comments are down. Traffic is lower when the Bucs lose, but comments increase. Frankly, it’s an extremely tiny percentage of readers who comment. Joe enjoys about 7K to 10K actual visits here a day.

I don’t think I have ever seen a defensive line play as bad as the Bucs did Sunday. EVER. For a unit to play that poorly, inexperience and or lack of talent alone cannot be the only culprit. Clearly the coaching of the D-line is not up to par. I wonder how different the play of the line would be up to this point if a Rod Marinelli were coaching these guys. Anyway I know the answer to one question about Gerald McCoy. He’s not better than Ndamukong Suh. That’s already obvious. I still hope he can at least become an impact player with the right coaching, but Suh is already looking like he’s going to be a beast for years to come in Detroit.
October 19th, 2010 at 9:51 pm
Does it really matter what coach says? McCoy is just doing what the coaches are telling him to do. They should be the ones to allow the defense to play ball and stop over thinking. By week 8 we will have it together. Also, why do keep on thinking talib is a pro bowler, he’s not.
