“He’s A Big Hand-Grabber”
October 29th, 2010So who does Bucs super rookie Mike Williams look like on the field?
Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, so says everywhere NFL analyst Pat Kirwan, the former player personnel executive and current senior analyst on NFL.com, NFL Radio and what seems like a million other outlets.
Kirwan is smitten with Williams, per his comments this week on the Miller and Moulton show on 770AM in Fort Myers.
“Mike Williams is a star in the making. And he’s a big hand-grabber. If you watch the way he catches, he grabs footballs like Michael Irvin did,” Kirwan said. “You know that’s what happens to guys [like me] who have been in this thing forever, every time you see a young player you think of him in terms of guys who played the game like him. And Mike [Williams] is a guy that doesn’t know he’s supposed to be covered, thinks he can score every time he catches it, and now the quarterback believes in him.”
Oh, and Kirwan also thinks meaningful January games might be in the Bucs’ future.
“Do I think they can make it to the playoffs as a Wild Card? …After Atlanta and the Giants, I don’t see the NFC. I think it’s just all up for grabs. Could they sneak into a Wild Card spot? I think they could,” Kirwan said.
Joe can’t imagine how big the Bucs’ bandwagon will get if they win in Arizona on Sunday.

Remember all the people who bitched about this pick? LOL. Monday Morning General Managers….
Thanks again, Dom…
October 29th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
Looks like Dom is better suited for drafting instead of Free Agency….
October 29th, 2010 at 12:33 pm
Dom found: Bryant, Penn and Blount. (acquired K2 as well), but way to be negative.
October 29th, 2010 at 12:35 pm
Big enough for Eric and Thomas and Tampa2 and Rah Dom (Javier, Buc You) to jump on??????
LOL. Wow, what am I thinking. Never mind.
October 29th, 2010 at 12:36 pm
I thought Penn was from the gruden/ mckay era?
October 29th, 2010 at 12:38 pm
i meant bruce allen/ gruden
October 29th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
Posey,
Penn did come in under Allen, but it was Dominick who scouted him and pushed for Allen to sign Penn off Minnesota’s Practice Squad. So Dominick is pretty invested in Penn (not just because of the $48 mil contract neither).

Huge buccaneer fantasy weekend for me. I have Mr. Mike Williams and Ronde Barber set in my lineups. Also rolling with the buc Defence to put a hurt on Max Hall. That guy does not look very promising. 5-2 here we come!
October 29th, 2010 at 1:04 pm
Oh, come on now. Can’t everyone see that Williams in the 4th round was a horrible pick. He’s a head case. The guy quits on his team. Heck, he’s probably quitting every other play. Sheesh, this team is horrible at evaluating and progressing talent….
NOTE: This poster is not responsible for misconstrued sarcasm. Any and all misunderstanding of the sarcasm of this post is the sole responsibility of the idiot that doesn’t know what sarcasm is… lol

Irvin seems like a pretty decent comparison. Same height, both 205-210 lbs, neither are burners, both have good hands and will go up and get the ball, both are physical and can run after the catch. Williams still has quite a lot to prove to really be mentioned with a guy like Irvin, but he does have the potential.
October 29th, 2010 at 1:11 pm
i would like to see a win over Cards before talking about playoffs.
October 29th, 2010 at 1:12 pm
I wasn’t being negative just stating his drafts have done way more for the team so far than his Free Agency pick ups since becoming GM… You named 3 nice pickups, here are 3 bad ones: Ward, Clayton, and Vincent
October 29th, 2010 at 1:52 pm
Hard to say Ward was a bad pick up, accept in hindsight. He was the number #1 RB FA. He just let the $$$ get to him. Clayton was awful and inexcusable. Vincent was not a bad pickup. He did what he was supposed to: give us some experience and and time and create competition. He was released without any injury settlment, but I would not be surprised if he files a grievance. Sure it could have ended better, but, again, hindsight.
October 29th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
JimBuc,
What’s your excuse for them last year for the rest of the FAs, like Byron “Sluggo” Leftwich, Mike Nugent, Shane Andrus, Dirk Johnson, Sam Paulescu, Devon Hall, Marcus Makculey, Marcus Johnson, Shawn Murphy, or Maurice Evans? Just curious, since youre evaluating FA releases.
October 29th, 2010 at 2:39 pm
How so? You sign a guy to a boatload of cash and he can’t even crack the starting lineup on a unit that is the weakest link on the team?
Pretty hard to say that was not a bad signing.
October 29th, 2010 at 3:04 pm
Joe, it is still hind sight though. We all loved the pick when it was made, but it did not workout. FAs are always a gamble.
October 29th, 2010 at 3:21 pm
Well Ward has already tripled his TDs and doubled his yards per carry with Houston, than when he was with us. Maybe he is better with zone blocking? I guess Houston’s gamble is paying off? Ours with him, not so much!

OAR — no excuse. Bad picks by Dom.
Those picks were very odd. I think Joe has actually commented on this. It’s as if in his first year Dom reached in FA to try to put somehting on the field and then from that bad experience fully bought into the “build through draft” mode the Bucs are currently in. I say it is odd because Joel Glazer articulated the “build through the draft” mode or the “build a foundation first” mode BEFORE all those picks. Maybe Dom was not sure that Glazer meant what he said? Who knows?
In any event, the book is still out on Doma and free agency. I just commented on the 3 specific picks.
October 29th, 2010 at 3:26 pm
Joe — what I meant is that you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would have AT THE TIME said Ward was a bad pick up. It certainly turned out that way, but the Bucs had a poor running game and were going to a ZBS system (mistake) so they got the #1 free agent RB who was a ZBS runner.
Shows the perils of free agency. Where’s Eric??? LOL
October 29th, 2010 at 3:37 pm
JimBuc,
I know, I just like razz’n ya! And, I have to agree.
October 29th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
I’d take Ward over these guys any day:
Tim Brown
Derrick Deese
Charlie Garner
Todd Steussie
October 29th, 2010 at 4:43 pm
Fire,
That’s some clear 20-20 hindsight you got!
October 29th, 2010 at 5:48 pm
OAR,
Keep “supporting” the Bucs from your couch. I’ll be at University of Phoenix Stadium on Sunday watching the Bucs work the Cardinals.
October 29th, 2010 at 10:14 pm
This was supposed to be about grabbing passes not grabbing ass the Kid has grabbed quite a few and made an ass out of quite a few people as well
October 30th, 2010 at 12:07 pm
Fire,
Hooooray for FGO! Good for you and enjoy the game!
