Brian Price Is A Monster

The way Bucs rookie defensive tackle Brian Price is playing early in training camp, he will introduce himself to opposing NFL quarterbacks this season in a very rude manner.

OK, it’s Aug. 1 and Joe’s not trying to get too hyped up and trying to temper his excitement.
Earlier today, Joe’s good friend Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune Twittered this afternoon how no Bucs player is impressing like running back Kareem Huggins.
Joe respectfully disagrees. Brian Price is lighting things up.
The Bucs rookie defensive tackle, drafted in the second round, quite possibly is having the best camp of any Bucs player. Folks, this guy is a friggin beast!
While Joe didn’t see Price get a sack today, Price is tearing up the Bucs offensive line, the first string no less. Every play, and Joe means every play, Price is getting pressure on the quarterback and disrupting players. The dude is lighting quick off the ball and with his brute strength is able to fight through double-teams even.
In one particular play, against the Bucs first string defense, Price fought through a double-team and flushed quarterback Josh Freeman out of the pocket to his right where he threw an incomplete pass in the flat.
This is exactly what the Bucs sorely lacked last year. Sometimes pressure is equally important as a sack because it blows a play up and that is exactly what Price was doing all day today.
Another cool thing about Price is how, when the ball (run or pass) gets past the line of scrimmage, how Price peels off the line and hauls ass downfield. In one play, Joe cannot remember who the receiver was, Price pulled off the line when Freeman let go of a pass to the right sideline, and Price damned near got to the sideline as quick as the ball. Had it been a complete pass, it’s very likely Price would have caught the receiver from behind. Surely the receiver heard Price’s footsteps.
After two practices, Price is easily the best defensive lineman.
Yes, it’s early and this could all change tomorrow. But the way Price is playing, if he continues, Joe doesn’t know who the Bucs are going to be able to keep this guy off the field.
In short, if Bucs fans are looking to go to BucsGear.com to buy a new jersey, after the first weekend of training camp, No. 92 should be on top of your shopping list.

At one point against the second-string offense, Price just lit up would-be blockers and chased Josh Johnson for his life. It was during this play Joe heard a fan scream while Price was wreaking havoc, “Look at him… look at  him… LOOK AT HIM!”

After two practices, Price is easily the best defensive lineman.

well, i was always so high on Price, look his body and you got the same warren sapp, now, we hope to see McCoy make a better game for us, im kinda worried about every site saying GMC was dominated, time will tell

  2. ac3 Says:

Joe – should we view this as a positive that Price is such a great player or a negative that he is outperforming gerald/our o line?

  3. Dew Says:

Saw the same thing Joe. They were double teaming Price and McCoy. Good things to come. Can’t wait.

  4. Dew Says:

And I don’t think Price and McCoy ever lined up together.

Positive. Not sure how this can be viewed any other way.

With maybe the exception of Bucs scouts or Mark Dominik, not sure anyone foresaw the way Price is dominating. Again, this is against the Bucs’ first string offense.

Against the second string offense, it’s like a man playing with children.

If they did, Joe didn’t see it.

  7. TJ Says:

? Watched Morris’s press conferance and he said M. Williams is the startng WR who is starting next ot him.

  8. BamBamBuc Says:

Defense is almost always ahead of offense at this point. I wouldn’t say this is a negative of our O-line yet. Give them time to “gel”. I think it’s awesome Price is showing this type of quickness and hustle. Give GMC a couple days to get into it, and hopefully we’ll see that they both have that quickness and pressure to make it virtually impossible for opposing lines to keep them out….

  9. eric Says:

Wow, Joe is not prone to hyperbole, so Price must be kicking some booty.

  10. BamBamBuc Says:

If Price carries this type of play into the regular season, and McCoy plays up to his #3 overall level…. I think a lot of people will take back what they were saying about drafting two DTs with our top 2 picks.

  11. Joe Says:

    Could be one of four:

    Sammie Stroughter
    Michael Clayton
    Arrelious Benn
    Reggie Brown

LOTS of time to figure that one out.

Joe brought his binoculars today to specifically focus on GMC and Price. With the exception of one or two plays, Price was putting pressure on the quarterback or creating disruption all day long.

The one time Joe didn’t see Price get pressure, he damned near caught up to a receiver along the right sideline that Joe detailed above.

  13. ac3 Says:

I’m just worried those who said we should have drafted Berry/Haden/Okung in the first round and price in the second round will start coming back…it was so long ago but that was a heated debate for months

  14. eric Says:

Dang, they named Williams a starter before even one pre-season game?

After a day and a half of pads?

    Seems a bit hasty.

  15. Joe Says:

Geez, ac3. Don’t jump off the Skyway Bridge just yet. It’s only Aug. 1.

  16. Dew Says:

I just can’t wait till they are both on the dline at the same time. These two guys are fast.

  17. Dew Says:

Hey don’t worry about Williams. He has made some outstanding catches already. But the good news is we are now loaded at the receiver position. A bunch of guys have looked really good.

  18. JimBuc Says:

I thought picking Price with our second was a “STUPID MOVE?” Hmmmmm . .

  19. Dew Says:

Funny. I liked it from day one. The Bucs are known for defense and that is what will get us back to the promise land. 🙂 And Freeman, Williams, and Benn. LOL

  20. Derek 'OldSchool' Fournier Says:

Depth charts are fluid. Nobody will know until they play against real opposition. I think the most likely and legitimate threat at the X is Urrutia but he has to put a lot more game on tape. Clayton is a waste there and I have not seen enough of Stovall in the spot to have any feel for him. While our WR’s are fairly interchangeable, Williams has seemed to be in the lead. I have seen him with Stovall at the Z and them swapping Stroughter and Benn in the slot.

  21. Capt.Tim Says:

That’s great news about Price! Hopefully he can keep it up against other OLs! If he’s manhandling Joseph and Faine, that’s the best we have to throw at him! And not to many teams can do better than that! The real fun is seeing McCoy and Price together ! That’s when we see if they can start to play off each other, and really blow up the middle! Now we need a dominate DE, to work with White!

  22. Radio Mushmouth Says:

    It’s practice guys.

This guy is probably running around, balls-to-the-wall with his hair on fire , like it’s the 1st quarter of the Superbowl , while the Veterans are smart enough to kind of be pacing themselves. It’s a loooong training camp.

We’ll see if he can last all camp playing at that level , and if he can mantain it when the real bullets start to fly. Not everyone can…just ask Micheal Clayton…

All I’m sayin is dont get too excited.

  23. Joe Says:

    Capt. Tim:

Price isn’t “manhandling” Joseph or Faine, but he’s pushing them.

The second team offensive line Price is working over pretty well.

  24. Capt.Tim Says:

McCoy signed a contract, and became 38 million dollars richer yesterday. That’ll put you in shock for a couple days, don’t care who you are! ( well, meybe not the Glazers!). His speed and Price’s power are gonna make teams hate to play us for years to come! Throw Miller in the mix, and we’ve got the best DTs we may ever have had! Gonna be fun to watch!

  25. Capt.Tim Says:

Joe, thanks for the response. I’m really surprised and happy to hear he’s pushing them ! Faine and Joseph are really good at their positions. I am in 100% agreement with you, rookie Dts ussually struggle their first year. It’s early, but really encouraging to hear he’s holding his own! We are counting on both rookies this year, which ussually isn’t good! This is an early encouraging sign!
