Donald Penn Is Not Being Picked On
July 29th, 2010It appears that some people are of the belief that the Bucs are singling out disgruntled Bucs left tackle Donald Penn in a game of chicken between Bucs general manager Mark Dominik and Penn’s legal camp.
Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune writes that premise is utter nonsense, and details why on the TBO.com’s Bucs blog.
Lest you get the idea that disgruntled left tackle Donald Penn is being singled out in some way, the Bucs have made it cleat that they have not entered into long-term contract negotiations with any of their restricted free agents.
Nor, it seems, do they intend to anytime soon.
With training camp reporting day now just a day away, the Bucs appear poised to wait possibly until a new collective bargaining agreement is reached before opening long-term contract talks with their RFAs.
Joe believes Penn is holding out not just for the obvious reasons, but also because, well, training camp sucks. Joe’s guess is Penn shows up sometime after the Jacksonville game (Aug. 28).
July 29th, 2010 at 12:06 pm
You think Penn understands what the deal is and is just pulling a Favre to miss some 2-a-days at camp?
The situation with the Chargers bears watching. They also have a RFA LT who is not happy and their GM is taking a hard stance. But he just gave Gates a huge contract. If he starts dealing with McNeil and Jackson, then it will put more pressure on Dom to get something done.
But if McNeil doesn’t have a deal, how can Penn say we are screwing him when McNeil is better?
July 29th, 2010 at 12:06 pm
I wonder how other teams look at a player who holds out like this?
I mean is he plays for the Bucs this year and he is a free agent next year do teams think longer about him because he was so willing to sit out?
July 29th, 2010 at 12:07 pm
Joe you said: “It appears that some people are of the belief that the Bucs are singling out disgruntled Bucs left tackle Donald Penn…”
Since when is Donald Penn disgruntled?
Is there proof of him being disgruntled?
Or was this perhaps a poor choice of words to describe him?
July 29th, 2010 at 12:11 pm
Of course he is disgruntled? WTF? Why else would he be holding out?
I guess you were trying to be funny.
July 29th, 2010 at 12:16 pm
Javier:
So you are suggesting Penn is happy with this mess?
July 29th, 2010 at 12:22 pm
Mr. Penn might want to reconsider his position. The more time the coaching staff gets to work with potential replacement at left tackle, the more they may like that player better than #70. And that could spell the end of his “leverage” with the Bucs or any other potential NFL options.
July 29th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
Javier…chuck out some stats to suggest otherwise! Any buddy holding out for more money fits Joe’s description.
Joe, are you going to write anything about the TO and Bryant situation?
July 29th, 2010 at 12:39 pm
Penn isn’t disgruntled, or angry at management, or bitter with the Bucs! Penn is doing exactly what he should toleverage for the best deal possible. The Bucs also aren’t disgruntled. This is business as usual in the NFL. Both parties know the Dance..tug of war for the best deal! Both know Penn will play! Both know Dominck will pay! Just armwrestling over how much! And, Oh, Yeah! If I wasn’t under contract, and could get of training camp, I would!! Training camp is the worst part of NFL life for Veterans. See ya after the Jags game fellas, have fun running in 120* temperatures in Tampa!

Disgruntled: feeling or expressing discontent or anger
I don’t think Penn is angry. I think he just wants a fair contract. By saying he is angry makes him appear to be some type of bad guy.
The fact of the matter is, post draft, him and his agent has been able to apply leverage on the GM and the Glazer’s to pay him as one of 32 starting left tackles.
That really is it.
That’s why I am against people making the players out to be bad people when they are the ones trying to get what they deserve.
If they don’t deserve it, then the Buccaneers will have to make the choice of playing back-ups. So it really is in the hands of the Bucs management.
But an angry Penn? To me that is an exaggeration.
July 29th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
Man, of course Penn is “disgruntled.” LOL. But, Penn can be “disgruntled” with his situation without being disgruntled with the Bucs.
Oh wait . . . Penn already said just that. Why are we talking about this still? Oh . . yeah . . . Javier . . . check.
July 29th, 2010 at 12:44 pm
Javier: your hits just keep coming:
“The fact of the matter is, post draft, him and his agent has been able to apply leverage on the GM and the Glazer’s to pay him as one of 32 starting left tackles”
LOL. How’s that “leverage” workikng out for Penn. He lost $100K, there’s no deal in sight other than the tender and he will start to lose about $200K per game come the first game.
July 29th, 2010 at 1:02 pm
Javier:
Re-read the definition you posted. Hell yes he’s expressing discontent… and has.
July 29th, 2010 at 1:28 pm
He has expressed discontent?
I must have missed those quotes from him. anybody have any proof of his discontent in any quotes? If there are then I could change my position on this. But I haven’t read a quote by him being upset whatsoever.
July 29th, 2010 at 1:32 pm
Not singling out Penn.
The Bucs are in firm collusion not to offer long term K’s to RFA’s.
Collusion v. competitive and the bucs pick the former.
July 29th, 2010 at 1:36 pm
Javier:
You may be right. Happy-go-lucky guys hold out all the time.
July 29th, 2010 at 1:39 pm
It doesn’t have to be a long term deal either. There is a way to sign him to a medium deal.
Although, I have heard someone else mention that we wil have 17 free agents for 2011? If that is true then the Bucs have bigger problems than just Penn. How do you keep those guys interested in staying? will the Glazer’s pony up the money to keep a lot of those ‘young guys developed at home?’
Wow!
Of course, this could be the reason they don’t want o open the flood gates by over paying Penn, regardless of their desperations for a Left Tackle.
What I don’t like about the Glazer’s is they are penny pinchers. They will, on principle, not pay someone and watch them walk away. As a fan, this sucks. Because this means that they are more concerned about their pennies than putting the best product on the field for their fans.
July 29th, 2010 at 1:40 pm
Penn will report no later than just after the Chiefs game (8\21). That gives him 2 weeks to get in football shape, learn the new nuances of the offense, and get in some game time.
July 29th, 2010 at 2:18 pm
McBuc, I’m sure Joe isn’t going to cause, they’re the Ben-gals. But, from their site:
GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The reports of wide receiver Antonio Bryant’s demise were premature. He said after Thursday’s first practice of training camp that his knee isn’t 100 percent and he isn’t full go, but he took all his reps and he’ll be ready for the Sept. 12 opener. He is at one practice a day and will take Thursday night’s practice off.
But Bryant made the biggest catch of camp long before. He and Terrell Owens spoke and he agreed to give him No. 81 if Owens gave a donation to the Overtown Optimists, a football Little League in Bryant’s hometown of Miami. Bryant revealed what he told Owens.
“I’m a realist. I’m not going to make a big spectacle out of it,” Bryant said. You’ve got a bigger legacy and number than I do. I’m a guy that just plays football. I’ve been on several teams like you have but changed my number several times and you haven’t. I don’t need your money. Just send a donation.
“I just told them to give those kids something. At least $8,000 for all the uniforms and registration and all the equipment they need. They’re trying to get where we are.”
Asked what number he’s going to be, Bryant said, “I don’t know … I don’t care. You know my name? OK.”
Bryant doesn’t seem fazed in the least by the Owens signing even though it figures to cut into his production.
“I would have gone after the guy, too,” Bryant said.
July 29th, 2010 at 2:19 pm
@ Javier,
Who walked because the Bucs wouldnt pay him? The last I can think of is McCardell a while ago.
July 29th, 2010 at 2:25 pm
What a jerk that Antonio Bryant is.
July 29th, 2010 at 2:26 pm
Wasn’t McCardell was traded?
Every Free Agent that left for another team. That was an easy one.
Don’t pretend that this isn’t obvious. The Glazers have choices too. They can give him more money, or make themselves look bad by staying cheap.
It’s hard to feel sorry for the Glazers (and I say them and not Dom because Dom is just a yes man). The Glazers got the town to pay for the stadium.
What expense do the Glazers have?
-Player Payroll (lowest/last in the NFL)
-Coaches/Mgmt Payroll (has to be the lowest with Raheem and Dom)
-The loan they leveraged against the Bucs for Man U? Forgot about that one! I take it back, the owners are in deep do do financially.
July 29th, 2010 at 3:01 pm
Is this Rahdom? Come on man; we know it’s you. Couldn’t stay away could you?
July 29th, 2010 at 3:26 pm
Javier is definitely RahDom and he thinks he is inside OBP or in the Penn camp. Check this statement out:
“It doesn’t have to be a long term deal either. There is a way to sign him to a medium deal.”
🙂
July 29th, 2010 at 3:33 pm
If you only knew who Javier really was……. 🙂
July 29th, 2010 at 3:36 pm
Wait, did I miss something? What happened to RahDom to make him leave and come back as Javier?
July 29th, 2010 at 3:38 pm
Geez, RahDom! “Javier n Wimauma” is the best you could come up with?
July 29th, 2010 at 3:44 pm
Just because a guy leaves the team doesnt mean that the Glazers are cheap. Who was the last player we let walk who ended up doing better for another team?
July 29th, 2010 at 4:18 pm
OAR…Thanks man, I guess I should have went to their site, but that is good news for them. The Bengals could be deadly this year, or they could implode. That is one hell of a receiving core. Man, I wish we still had AB to help our young guys along. His statements sure do make him look like a stand up guy. You know, Ocho and TO will be covered for sure, so AB may have one hell of a year if they can get all three on the field together.
July 29th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
Hey OAR, are you named after the band?
July 29th, 2010 at 4:54 pm
McBuc, No not the band, just my great-grandpappy. Those are our initials. Even though I’m more familar with the older rock bands(70s’ and 80s), I have heard of that band before and they are fairly good.
BTW I agree.
July 29th, 2010 at 5:15 pm
@McBuc
It’s going to be hard for AB to have great stats when he is on the PUP list…or even if he plays. There is talk of him playing slot…we’ll see just how well he does there. But I suspect he’ll go down to an injury earlier in the season or before it starts.
July 29th, 2010 at 5:25 pm
And another joins the cascade of loving bucs fans wishing Mr. Bryant succumbs to injury.
Of course he is ineligible for PUP since he practiced today, but that is besides the point.
Classy!
July 29th, 2010 at 5:30 pm
Xavier Fulton is the next Anthony Munoz. Why are we even talking about Donald Penn ??
