Josh Freeman Is Doug Williams

June 10th, 2010

Joe knows that some of his readers, for whatever reason, are hostile to Twitter. To Joe, that’s like being allergic to libraries.

Twitter is loaded with all sorts of solid information that just doesn’t make it in the 19th century news delivery service known in some circles as newspapers, or even on sport radio and maybe not even blogs.

That’s why Joe scours Twitter for Bucs tidbits.

To that end, Joe has noticed that former Bucs secondary coach and current Tass spokesman at BSPN, Herm Edwards, has become a Twittering fool, answering dozens of football questions a day from fans.

Today, Edwards was queried who Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman reminds him of. Joe believes Bucs fans will be intrigued at his answer.

@dar268:  Coach what veteran QB does Josh Freeman remind you of?

@HermEdwardsESPN:  Former bucs qb Doug Williams. He’s big, strong & athletic.

Herm should know. Williams beat Herm and the Beagles in the Bucs first playoff game in 1979.

Joe also sees some similarities, aside from the obvious. Joe also knows if, like Williams, Freeman can lead the Bucs to an NFC title game, Bucs fans will be more than happy with the comparisons.

Sorry, but Josh Freeman is Ben Roethlisberger without the rapey-ness. To say Doug Williams is just a bad comparison

That would be like comparing Sabby to John Lynch, and no Buc fan would EVER dream of making such a ridiculous comparison

  2. oar Says:

While I like Doug Williams, he wasn’t the greatest pigskin thrower. With that said, I don’t exactly hope Freeman turns out to be like him statically(except with Williams playoff wins), but I do hope he can take us to an NFC Championship game and beyond(like Williams in Washington). Williams was probablly lucky to be familair with Joe Gibbs. Who was his offensive coordinator(a year or two) here and brought him to Washington, when Culverhouse wouldn’t pay.
BTW doesn’t Freeman have 2 inches and about 30 pounds on Williams(his playing days obviously)?

  3. Gary Says:

Man lets get this thing started already! I really have good feeling about Freeman this year, I think he is gonna put the team on his back and take us somewhere we can be proud of after last year.

  4. Gary Says:

And yes Eric, Louie, Tampa2, Rahdom, & OAR – I know anything will make me proud after last years debacle, so I just saved you from posting that.

  5. oar Says:

Gary, Thanks man! I have finally made it on some kind of list!

  6. Eric S Says:

I liked Williams when he was here in TB. He was the unquestioned leader of the team. They lost a piece of their soul when he left. Having said that, Williams routinely overthrew receivers. He couldn’t read defenses all that well. He was dreadful in the playoffs for TB. He was 27 for 85 (31%) with 2 TDs and 9 INTs. The guy was not an accurate passer. He finished his career under 50% comp percentage.

I sure hope Freeman is better than that. He is similar to Williams in that he has a strong arm and he wasn’t that accurate last season. 54% is just not that good in today’s NFL. You have to be at 60% or over to be considered decent. If you want to be elite, you have to get it to the mid 60% range. It would be too much to ask of Freeman to get to 65% next season. I would settle for 60%.

  7. Gary Says:

Your welcome OAR, I forgot to include Thomas. Seriously though, all the “kool-aid drinkers” (me, JimBuc, D-money, etc) should have some kinda bet with the “haters” (see list above).

I wish there was a way we could wager on the Bucs success this season for something worthwhile. That would make the comments interesting right?

  8. RahDomDaBest Says:

    He’s big,strong & athletic.

Usually the characteristics of a first round draft pick in a QB.

I don’t know if Doug Williams wants to be compared to him just yet though.

    But yes, he’s big,strong & athletic.

I am pulling for Freeman to convert on 3rd down more and throw far fewer INTs… that alone will prove he has matured… hopefully those improvements will also increase TDs from the team collectively… bit so long as Freeman does his part, I’d be smiling.

  9. oar Says:

Gary, You have me all wrong. I don’t hope my Bucs do bad or poor. I just have reservations about the staff and thier abilities/decisions, but we will see.
Don’t know why we are haters, just cause we don’t agree with your OPINIONS all the time? I’m sure you have different opinions or don’t agree with your parents or your boss or your wife, but I doubt you call them haters too? Well maybe not!
BTW Thanks for not cussing too!

  10. TJ Says:

Was looking at Rookie QB numbers and Freeman played better than Stafford and Sanchez had a good running gamme and a good D I think Freeman will be good alot better than Stafford

  11. Gary Says:

    OAR,

I guess you shouldn’t be on that list then, because if you are rooting for the Bucs to well and therefore hoping your predictions are incorrect, then you are a fan and have my respect.

Nothing wrong with saying the coaching staff needs to go, or is incompetent or whatever. That is your opinion and your allowed to have that. I just dont like the people on here who constantly badger every post with negativity and create the perception (to me anyway) that they would like the team to fail so they are proven correct, that is who I refer to as “hater”.

I’m to exhausted to type anything after reading all that

  13. RastaMon Says:

He may soon equal and pass many of Doug Williams “stats” but until he proves he has equal HEART…he’ll be only 1st second place.
I was there in the Old Sombrero Doug’s last season , when he threw a INT….he chased the man down about 60 yards from the turnover spot….he chased the man down and tackled him hobbling with a gimp knee….
the same knee Culverhouse used in his low ball/hardball contract renewal negotiation

  14. Mr. Lucky Says:

So now posting Herm Edward’s tweets is considered news?

It’s gonna be a looooonnngggg summer Joe.

  15. drdneast Says:

Agree (Mr.Lucky). Listening to Herm is like listening to Rah’s clone. Twitter is for little girls and for people who think they are so important that everyone wants to know aht they are saying or doing every minute of the day. This is the one thing that bothers me about Gerald McCoy. Just can’t imagine players like Joe Green, Dick Butkus, Ray Nitsche and other notable NFL all pro tough guys being on Twitter.

  16. Mr. Lucky Says:

drdneast – yes. Twitter, along with Facebook, gives a voice to the meaningless drivel that insignificant people like Herm Edwards can utilize.

I understand how the narcassistic Hollywood people like to twitter and the American sheep follow along but McCoy should NOT be tweeting – especially from OTA/One Buc, etc.,

Off field if McCoy performs to our expectations he will find that tweeting his activities will result in autograph hounds, etc.,

I mean Twitter is for entertainment purposes.

  17. Vorblaw Says:

Joe, I must be allergic to libraries then.. I mean if Rachel Watson doesn’t Twitter is there really a point to it?

  18. Joe Says:

    Vorblaw:

I mean if Rachel Watson doesn’t Twitter

And you know this how? 🙂

  19. RahDomDaBest Says:

Why is twittering so bad? Yes it caters to the narcissists but, all because you are getting old and losing touch with the fast pace society you can’t down people who are in the now.

Get with the 2nd decade of the 21st century… twittering and facebook is a part of millions of people’s lives.

And since Herm is IN the media, I think he should continue to tweet… as with all media personel… it keeps them in the loop.

Do I tweet or use facebook? No… but that’s my choice, I am not that needy… but a lot of people are, and this means of communication is the now and downing someone who communicates in the now makes you sound like an old out of touch grumpy troll. You still got 8-Tracks Lucky???

  20. Vorblaw Says:

    “Vorblaw:

Because if she did, I’m sure you would have told us long before now! 🙂
