Bucs Fall Out Of Revenue Top 10
June 10th, 2010Joe has no doubt the cash machine that is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is very healthy, just not as healthy as Team Glazer wants it to be.
Forbes editor Michael Ozanian reports that in 2009 the Bucs fell from the elite earners among NFL teams for the first time in many years.
Malcolm Glazer’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers need to repair their ship before it sinks. Last year we valued the franchise at almost $1.1 billion but the value will fall well below $1 billion when we update our rankings in September. An NFL executive told me today that for the first time in several years the Buccaneers fell out of the top 10 in the league in revenue in 2009.
Joe’s impressed that the Bucs were even up there in the Top 10 for so long. Keep in mind that’s revenue, but not profit. Very impressive.
The Bucs’ willingness to have a low payroll, and their sweetheart stadium deal, should ensure that Team Glazer will keep the team indefinitely, or at least however long it takes to build a “lasting contender” and sell high.

Joe, are you sure Andy Green isn’t the source for Forbes? Please advise before JimBuc posts that this article is also agenda driven.

Glazers make a profit, and while they may care about a lot of things, they care about profit the most. Businessmen – make no mistake.

Joe you make the distinction between falling out of the top 10 in revenue and not profit, but when you combine being in the top half of the league in revenue and being at the bottom in expenses (payroll, no stadium loan, etc) then their profit must be among the top right?
I have to admit, with that logic, they better spend BIG next year. We have to be major players next offseason, there is just no excuse not to.

Wait a minute Gary, why would they spend BIG next year if they are building through the draft? Or, are they going to be on Plan C by then?

Joe here,
@Gary — Of course, Joe knows the difference between profit and revenue. Just wanted to clarify to keep readers thinking. Yes, if the Bucs were top 10 in revenue, they were probably even higher in the profit ranks, for sure.
@lightningbuc — Not about to start writing disclaimers to diffuse JimBuc. And Joe’s not one to invest the time to tangle with him. Makes the head hurt too much. Besides, you give it a good effort, and Joe really enjoys Eric’s sense of humor.

Yeah but since the Bucs are the lowest spenders, that difference from the revs do equal a nice profit.

What the Glazers buy the team for? $100M +/-?
Not a bad ROI

Great job bucs fans exercising your right to withhold the $ in protest of this huge step backward.
I salute you!
I am very proud to know that most of you arent the Jimbucs of the world. This year lets see if we can do even better until some changes are made.
Maybe when we are about 3-10 when he can have just Jimbuc on the northside of the stadium under the ship with her “Glazer-love” or sign.

BTW- it appears that the rev sharing check was the highest ever per team so that cant be said to be the reason for the drop in revs.

How fast the ship sinks…
perennial losers before “most” of these fans came to love/hate the bucs. Everyone is now wanting to be the first to say told you so… win or lose it is all about how much we know about how good or bad the team/management/coaching/owner is…
it makes me long for the orange red white days… where you where a fan even with the owner/team or team/owner, we had..
we all should look at the photo at the top of this post.. just how did we get to that exalting position.. one of the best days i have had as a bucs fan, in my friends house(a panthers fan who was wearing raider clothes) and we won… YES!!! yeah we never have seen that plateau since then or really gotten close to that again.. we have had a “few” more “good” seasons under Coach Gruden but nothing that even came close to reaching the NFC championship game… and our “fans” complain about how much the owners are not spending on FA how they won’t pay players…
look back at the salary of 2002 where where we then compared to now… from USA today team payroll 2002-$ 64,486,295 2009- $ 84,501,322 in 2002 we where middle of the league between Indy- $ 65,728,706 and Detroit- $ 64,329,265 in 2009 we where third from the bottom between Seattle- $ 89,075,820 and Kansas City- $ 83,187,156… (my point sometime i know) 2002 top payroll Pittsburgh- $ 85,283,461 2009 top payroll New York Giants- $ 137,638,866 … wow.. thats a lot of $ and how well did that high payroll do for those teams?? 2002 Pittsburgh 10 wins 5 losses 1 tie 2009 Giants 8 wins 8 losses… it really dose not mater what the money being spent is.. it is all about huddling down becoming a team and playing the game on Sunday. Yes the coaching is a factor and so is the schedule, the players ect. ect. ect.
to me as a fan i watch as a fan hoping we get a player and if we do great if we don’t then it gives me another team to watch a little bit more.. i am a Buccaneer Fan first a NFL fan second.. I like what we are doing with our last two drafts, getting younger more versatile players.. sure we may/will have a rough year again but as i have sat and watched much much worse in the past and still supported my team.. I am not saying i like to lose i do not! but to get younger and have a deep team it takes time.
I will still be here watching and cheering and yelling at the TV…
Yeah how fast the ship sinks… it does leave more room on the quarterdeck though..
Go Bucs!!!

Rhino,
Or maybe it does matter what the money being spent is. Using your same USAToday data the Rams had the lowest payroll and the worst record. The Chiefs had the second lowest payroll and fourth worst record. Bucs third lowest and third worst. Seattle fourth lowest and sixth worst. Yes, a few of the low spenders made the playoffs, but still, it’s all how you look at the numbers. New Orleans was 4th highest and it seemed to help them get over the hump.

lightningbug — how about those Skins. How did their spending work out for them? Gotta love those Skins because Snyder is committed to winning

WHo is that guy in the picture with Glazer? What is that big trophy they are holding?
June 11th, 2010 at 12:40 pm
Eric is in love . . . . .
No surprise that the revenues would be down. Bad product. Worse PR. Bad economy. High prices for tickets, parking, beer etc. Lethal combination

@jimbuc
I think your mancrush is with the weird looking old guy and his offspring.

any doubters?
He now unfortunately has health issues, to which i wish him only the best. And a BIG thank you.. As to the “boys” it is getting time to say to them…….. S.O.G.O.T.P!!!!
