“I Feel Like We Are Three Years Ahead”

May 6th, 2010

Like all real men, Joe has the NFL Network and watches it daily, religiously. But Joe knows there are some (wo)men who don’t have the NFL Network.

You know, the same kind of men who regularly watch “The View” and “Dancing With The Stars?”

To that end, Joe pities them to a certain degree (hey, the last three residences Joe has had, he didn’t think about moving in/buying the place until he first confirmed he could get DirecTV/NFL Sunday Ticket/the NFL Network. So people who whine like women that the local evil cable syndicate, Out House Networks, shakes down and holds innocent yet naive football fans hostage have only themselves to blame. Who exactly forced you to live in an Out House?) so Joe offers this recent NFL Network interview with Raheem the Dream.

In a curious yet unique view, Raheem the Dream notes that firing former offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski before the 2009 season began and scraping the horrid Jim Bates Experiment midway through the 2009 campaign actually put the Bucs rebuilding process “three years ahead” of schedule.

(Tip o’ the hat to Anwar Richardson of the Tampa Tribune.)

  1. tampa2 Says:

Only Raheem could think that he is ahead of schedule!

  2. Louie Says:

Wow, that’s great! That means we’re going to the Superbowl this year, right!!!???

  3. hendawg1906 Says:

I agree. Raheem The Dream will be a great coach and all you haters will be on his jock once this team becomes one of the elite!

  4. d-money Says:

Ok I’m not a Raheem basher and I ususally try and give him the benefit of the doubt but…. this might be a bit of a stretch.

  5. Raheem Morris Says:

There is no pamphlet or handbook given out to be Raheem Morris.

When you talk about Raheem Morris, your talking about a violent, man who has certain core beliefs…

Your talking about a guy who runs un-organized practices, allocates reps to the wrong quarterbacks, but does have a nice smile.

Your talking about a guy who does have core beliefs.. but will drop them a week before the season and then maybe later on… because thing about core beliefs is they are meant to be changed.

When you are talking about Raheem Morris you’re talking about a guy who needs to call upstairs to make a quarterback change and who also dares you to question the signing of Michael Clayton.

Also… when you are talking about Raheem Morris you are talking about a guy who will shoot you straight and won’t try to sell you… All though, Raheem Morris does want to sell you… he wants to sell you and get you in his boat… so we can all paddle and be sold on something… I dunno… maybe core beliefs.. or something.

So, again.. When you are talking about Raheem Morris, you may or may not be talking about a boat salesman?

  6. Chargedcbh Says:

As usual nothing but stupid comments, what is suppose to say? We stink? Were not goin to the playoffs, why don’t you people grow up!

    In word, yes.

Speaking the truth would have been a better choice than spin that is so outrageous it’s a slap to any sane person or someone older than a sixth-grader.

And for the record, Joe does not have Raheem at all, nor is Joe taking potshots at him.

  8. Gary Says:

Seriously, the crybaby little bitches on this site are pathetic. There will be more than enough opportunities to bash him if he messes up during the season. Give the guy some credit for having the balls to fire both coordinators before the 1st season even started. It that sense, yes, he is ahead of schedule rather than waiting after the season which is exactly what he says in the interview. Yes he messed up badly, yes he has to get better, and yes he WILL BE better this year. Rather than always complaining about every single quote from this guy, why dont all of you pull your tampons out and support him, he IS our coach… or at the very least wait until the season starts and then say I told you so.

  9. Dakid5 Says:

Ive got a good feeling about this season.. A lot of guys like to bash Raheem but i believe in this guy and if we end up dumpin him he’ll become great elsewhere..Cant wait to see how things change when we are winning and all the ppl talkin shit now start jumpin ship

  10. Gary Says:

And here comes some garbage from Eric (& others)… where you at man? Come on, I’m counting on you!

  11. Joe Says:

    Gary:

Give the guy some credit for having the balls to fire both coordinators before the 1st season even started.

In that respect, Joe is in the minority and agrees with this.

Joe has written this before: When Team Glazer fired Chucky, they dragged their feet too long. By the time Rah was hired, all the decent coaches who would have been coordinator canidates were already hired/employed by someone else. Rah had to settle for guys who were walking the sidewalks. There was a reason Jagodzinski and Bates were on the street: It showed last year.

Is Greg Olson a panacea? Joe has his doubts. Rah showed he will be a solid defensive coordinator.

  12. TJ Says:

I am not here to bash Raheem I think he learned on the Job last year and the team improved at the end of the year. I think he can be a better coach this year but I saw on Buccaneers.com him being mic’ed up and he was talking his ass off like usual and a drill was starting and he had no idea where to go or waht to do. Then he is joking with Olsen and the only serious one paying attention is Van pelt. Just wonder sometimes if he is trying to fit in with the players too much and then he talk so fast to regiseter what his brain is thinking example yesterday or also when he said they were a couple of games away from the playoffs and the best Morris quote ever I dare anybody to challange Micheal Clayton

  13. Marlow Says:

I watch Dancing With the Stars! The chicks are hot!

  14. Louie Says:

@Gary: “There will be more than enough opportunities to bash him if he messes up during the season.”

What the hell was last season besides a massive screw-up?

  15. Lakeland Bob Says:

    Gary-you’re the man.

  16. Joe Says:

I watch Dancing With the Stars! The chicks are hot!

There are tons of outlets on TV (and the Internet) to gawk at hot babes than to stoop to that level. A man who admits to watching that tripe is in the very dire position of having his mancard suspended.

The movies on Lifetime are akin to ManSwers compared to that show. Eeeewww…

  17. d-money Says:

I think he may have meant that had he stayed with Bates and Jaodzinski it would have set them BACK three years.

SO yeah they are three years ahead of where they would have been whith those guys but they are right where should have been if those guys hadn’t sucked.

Bucs + (Bates + Jags not sucking) = right on track

Bucs + (Bates + Jags sucking) = 3yr set back

Bucs – (Bates and Jags sucking) = right on track

I think his math just sucks.

  18. Louie Says:

I vote for d-money as the official Morris translator and apologist!

  19. Eric Says:

    Ok, I understand this:

He screwed up more in one season than most coaches do in three. Agreed.

That is a good thing in the Dream’s world.

So this year we can screw up in the second year more than most do in six? Or, the 3:1 ratio may just stay constant from year to year. That is a very high screwing up standard but this guy may be up to the challenge.

We shooting for 1-15, but having learned a lot?

    Awesome!

  20. Louie Says:

    @Eric, ROFL!

  21. Gruss222 Says:

    @Gary

Great post! Haters are going to be haters. They will constantly post their negative trash of Rah and the Bucs. But I guarantee you that when Rah turns this team around they will be the first ones on saying they supported him the whole way and always knew he could do it.

  22. Eric Says:

As long as Kareem Huggins keeps practicing, all things are possible.

  23. big007hed Says:

Man ppl on here will bitch about everything…. @Joe what coach has ever told the truth during a interview? The very few instances of coaches being honest are famous videos on the internet (Herm Edwards, Deniis Green, and Jim Mora) b/c no coach actually speaks the truth

  24. BamBamBuc Says:

    @ Joe

“Speaking the truth would have been a better choice than spin that is so outrageous it’s a slap to any sane person or someone older than a sixth-grader.”

Sorry, Joe. Hate to disagree with you here. There is no “truth” in speaking about the future, as the future is unknown. He is speaking with optimism rather than pessimism. If he were to say “There’s no chance in HELL we’re making the playoffs this year, but we’re still working hard”, people may believe that, but if by some fluke (easier schedule, rookies performing out of their heads, etc) they do make the playoffs, Rah looks like a moron for saying that and would probably be fired (he’s not Rex Ryan, able to get away with comments like that). Also, he’s not just saying that for us, he’s saying that for the players. If he tells them they have no chance, what purpose do they have playing hard this year?

  25. thomas Says:

What a dumb a–! sorry for the expletive.

How can anyone think that hiring/firing both coordinators during a 3-13 season where you were dead last in the NFL in rush defense and near the bottom in all others advanced you 3 years?

His horrible seasons to start with set the team back 5 years!

  26. Louie Says:

@big007hed, what do all three of those coaches have in common? 1) They are all losers. 2) They currently don’t have NFL coaching jobs.

I wouldn’t want to compare The Dream to those guys.

  27. thomas Says:

    his horrible decisions . .

  28. Gruss222 Says:

Anybody else getting tired of nothing but negative bashing of the Bucs on this site? Starting to wonder if this is JoeBucsBashing.com!

  29. Joe Says:

    BamBamBuc:

Actually, Rah would not look like a moron for saying that. Saying you are three years ahead because you fired your coordinators before the end of the last season? Com’ on. That’s so absurd.

Rah could have easily said, “Look, firing the coordinators when we did wasn’t the best of timing but we believe we are better for it. We still have a long road to travel but I believe we’re better and who knows, maybe we could make the playoffs?”

That’s speaking the truth with spin so the cheerleaders can rest comfortably at night with their blankies.

Pick any coach you respect, Parcells, Walsh (yeah, he’s dead), Jeff Fisher, shoot even Sean Peyton, could you imagine any of them actually saying with a straight face their are three years ahead (of schedule) because they canned both coordinators before the end of the season? That’s beyond crazytalk.

One reason why people like Parcells so much (I think he’s a bit overrated) is because he tells it like it is. If the players don’t like it, there’s other teams they can play for, or they can man up and make themselves better.

Sometimes shame, or the unvarnished truth, is a good thing.

  30. thomas Says:

    @Gruss222:

Don’t you want to hear from both sides of the aisle on the status of this team?

Regarding the coaching that we saw last year, there was virtually nothing other than negative that occurred. If you want to discuss the positives – well – Raheem was never penalized for excessive celebration, he found his way to every game, he almost uttered an intelligible word at a press conference, he managed not to fire a few assistant coaches, he has an excellent smile, he really supports children by speaking at schools.

So there were a few positives, unfortunately almost none are football related.

If you want positives, come back in 2012 when this team is expected to be competitive again!

  31. Joe Says:

Not to deviate from this topic, but Lawrence Taylor could be in some deep s(p)it. He’s alleged to have beat up and raped a 15 year-old prostitute. That’s one sick MOFO if true.

  32. Eric Says:

The problem with Raheem is that he has earned very little credibility in terms of on the field performance of his team.

Nothing wrong with being positive and expecting to turn things around, but making statements like “I feel like we are three years ahead of schedule” due to last years disaster is rediculous.

Its a simple concept. Perform first, build some cred, THEN you can brag about it.

Otherwise, he will just continue to look foolish.

  33. Gary Says:

Look, I agree that maybe saying we are 3 yrs. ahead of schedule wasn’t the smartest thing to say, especially coming off a 3-13 season. But I would much rather have a coach that wears his heart on his sleeve and says what he thinks rather than someone who never says anything worhwhile to the media and is incredibly boring like Belichick. I know, I know, he is great coach and Raheem can’t wear his jock, blah blah. Maybe Rah might say a dumb/politically incorrect thing once in a while because he is young, inexperienced, and still learning. But I take pride in watching this team and coach grow in front of our eyes. So I will deal with his occasional slip up because most of the time, we get a pretty good idea of what he is thinking, and his opinion is the only one that matters since he is our coach. Now imagine he said 1 yr. instead of 3 yrs, anyone think that is outlandish? Probably not.

  34. Gruss222 Says:

So, according to some of you, Rah needs to step up to the mic, say “we need to play better, we as coaches need to coach better, we need to look at what we’re doing and do it better, that includes coaches.”. Only to come out the next week and nothing has changed.

Sorry! I’ll take Rah speaking from his heart, sometimes making crazyazz statements, if it makes this team play every down hard for him. The more a team feels that their HC believes in them, supports them and will fight fir them, the more that team unites and is motivated to achieve what their HC ask of them.

  35. Joe Says:

You don’t think Team Glazer will remember that statement if, God forbid, the Bucs finish 4-12 again, that Rah believed he was three years ahead of schedule?

Come on, we’re talking about men here, not middle school kids. Rah’s hero Tomlin is hardly a rah-rah cheerleader. He calls out his players all the time. Walsh, Parcells would rather cuss out a player that say something remotely as crazy as what Rah did. Joe wasn’t much of a Father Dungy fan but he wasn’t a cheerleader either.

Saying on a national television network that firing your coordinators puts you three years ahead is patently absurd to anyone above a seventh-grade level. There’s not one respected football person who would say that was actually a good thing to do much less gives you three years head start.

Rah may have won over a naive player or two with that statement but he did himself no favors with anyone else, including his employers, by saying that.

I like Rah’s enthusiasm, but this was simply crazytalk if not insulting to any intelligent football fan. It’s borderline downright lying to people.

  36. Eric Says:

I would like the Dream to say “we are a 3-13 football team until we prove otherwise”, and “we are working our tails off to get better because last season was totally unacceptable and we have no excuses”, and “no one has proven anything on this team”.

Instead we got BS spin about being three years ahead of schedule.

It aint gonna fly, no matter how much the Dream “lovers” spin the spin.

  37. Chargedcbh Says:

OMG You Bucs fans are beyond stupid! What NFL coach comes out and tells you the truth. You get the same answers EVERY year. This is the guy we wanted in the draft, we fill he is a fit for our team.
You guys can’t be this dumb!!!!!
And Joe all you do is take shots! With your little jokes, Bust in Waiting!
This is why the fans our this way, sites like this, Sileo, Ron and Ian (there gonna trade the first pick) the ONLY person that makes any sense is the Big Dog.

  38. Eric Says:

“‘No excuses, no explanations.’ I first heard Coach Dungy say these words in 1996, when he explained how we were going to turn the Bucs franchise around”.

Derrick Brooks, commenting on Mr. Dungy

A bit differnt, don’t ya think?

  39. Joe Says:

    Chargedcbh:

You are comparing apples and oranges.

No one in their right minds believes anyone from any organization about the draft. Have no clue why you even invoked that.

OK, if no coach is to be believed on anything, then why interview him? Then why listen to him? Then why waste your time? To even suggest firing coordinators in the middle of a season puts you three years ahead of your plans is beyond disrepectful to whoever you are speaking to if Rah thinks anyone would believe that. Why spit in the faces of your fans? Does Rah really think fans are that stupid? Do you enjoy being lied to that much?

And what is this “shot” business? Oh, he took a shot! Oh, that’s a shot! Oh, oh, ooohh, a shot! GASP!

What exactly is a “shot?” Joe’s idea of a shot is tequila or a bullet. Please educate Joe.

  40. BamBamBuc Says:

    @Joe

“Rah could have easily said, “Look, firing the coordinators when we did wasn’t the best of timing but we believe we are better for it. We still have a long road to travel but I believe we’re better and who knows, maybe we could make the playoffs?”

I could have accepted that too.

I agree that “three years ahead of schedule” is a bit ludicrous. Maybe he’s going back to the days of Mike Shula as OC for a whole lot longer than he ever should have been a coordinator of anything. In a sense saying “Hey, we could have kept these guys around for 3 years and been WAY behind schedule like the team has done before, but we didn’t, we got rid of them and now we’re on track”

It’s a matter of perspective, I guess. We take the statement different ways. I took it as “we were better off getting rid of them when we did than keeping them around and putting us behind again this year”.

  41. Joe Says:

    BamBamBuc

I agree that “three years ahead of schedule” is a bit ludicrous.

That’s the only thing Joe had an issue with and it was so wild, that’s why Joe ran with the article.

Joe’s not anti-Rah, which some argue that Joe is. Joe loves his enthusiasm, but sometimes, you have to check yourself, dial it down a little.

Joe understands the point Rah was trying to make, but that was way more than overkill.

  42. JimBuc Says:

Eric — if I ever get in trouble, you are my guy. Hope I never have to call in this chip (if you know what I mean), but you sure put up good arguments.

  43. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Every time Raheem opens is mouth, he proves the point better than any of us ever could that he is a total and utter moron.

  44. JimBuc Says:

Radio Mushmouth — hate to say it but same thing happens most times you type.

  45. Radio Mushmouth Says:

No that would be you JimBuc….that’s why your blind defense of the Glazers and everything this regime does is mocked , and is the running punch-line around here.

  46. JimBuc Says:

I was not defending anyone I was talking about you. You probably don’t understand that.

  47. Radio Mushmouth Says:

So when you run around claiming the Glazers are not cheap, you are really talking about me….you’re right I don’t understand.

  48. BamBamBuc Says:

Being cheap may not be a bad thing. In 2003, the Bucs were actually over the salary cap. As well as 04 and 05. Liberal spending caused the team to release many of the players that got us to the Super Bowl because we couldn’t afford to field a team under the cap. It wasn’t until 2007 that we were under the cap significantly again. I don’t mind being frugal with spending, so long as they can keep the team together, grow and get better each year. This is an uncapped year, and most teams have cut payroll, not thrown their money around like candy at a parade. The team must balance payroll and talent.

  49. Joe Says:

    BamBamBuc:

As terrible as Bruce Almighty was in the draft, he was that good with the salary cap.

  50. Mark Says:

I see the math… it’s about having to re-install and re-staff and how long that takes realistically.

In my mind, that’s a 2-3 year process to accomplish.
