Warren Sapp Schools Gerald McCoy

April 9th, 2010

gerald mccoyWho better to teach stud Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy a few moves than former Bucs great Warren Sapp?

Recently on the set of the NFL Network, Sapp, an NFL Network analyst, and host Rich Eisen welcome McCoy. While on the set, McCoy shows Sapp his signature moves, but they weren’t good enough for Sapp.

Sapp then demonstrated to McCoy how a Hall of Fame NFL tackle makes a quarterback pay.

[UPDATE: Per former Bucs defensive end Steve White, the move Sapp uses on McCoy in the video linked above is Sapp’s signature “Ghost Move.” Read White’s insight in the comments section of this post and an Xs and Os description of the ghost move here.]

Maybe Sapp should show us the moves he made to make his girlfriend pay! Must have been some slick moves to end up in cuffs.

  2. ScottyinCali Says:

Why does this guy remind me of Gaines Adams?

  3. JoeBucsSteveCampbell Says:

Scotty-they kind of look alike in the face, but that’s it. McCoy is legit, IMO.

  4. zech Says:

I’m starting to think that McCoy won’t live up to his potental and could be a huge bust for the bucs!

  5. Eric Says:

    Gaines McCoy?

  6. Bucfanjeff Says:

zech..you’re on crack. I see no bust here.

  7. LaughingCat Says:

If the Bucs pick McCoy, Sapp will take him under his wing. Sapp wants to see his legacy extended with the team and get some credit for McCoy’s success. I see a win/win for the Bucs. (Might be the only wins the Bucs see.)

Just a heads up for the people who actually took this post seriously and clicked the link to watch the video, the move Sapp ended up showing McCoy was/is the ghost move I referred to awhile back. It looks real simple when he is doing it in a suit and tie and walking through it but trust me its a LOT harder than it looks……and its deadly when perfected.

  9. OAR Says:

Mr White, As always, thanks again for all the awesome info and the heads up. I did watch and very cool.

  10. ReaderM Says:

Thanks Steve for the heads up, Yesterday I must of replayed the video at least 5 times trying to figure out what move Sapp was doing and I just couldn’t see it fully, now i def know why it called a “ghost move. ” Also another thing u notice in that video is how much a fan of Sapp, McCoy is…. not sure how his NFL Network contract works in this regards but if we draft McCoy, I would hope Sapp wouldn’t mind taking him under his wing some and teaching him how to be an elite DT in the league.

I heard a news guy in oklahoma say that the sooners deffense should be better with McCoy gone

    Who said that, John Blake?

  13. zech Says:

Joe do u think McCoy will have double digit sacks I mean they to me looks at best 8 sacks a season maybe I’m wrong there’s something about McCoy I’m not sold on !

Sacks alone do not make a defensive tackle. Far too many things Joe has heard from real football people (Gil Brandt, Pat Kirwan, Mike Mayock, Warren Sapp, Steve White, Mike Golic) about McCoy/Suh suggests McCoy will be good and while Suh should also be dynamite, there are legitimate concerns.

Joe will defer to those men and sleep soundly if McCoy winds up with the Bucs.

Joe has seen/heard nothing about McCoy that has soured him on the man. Eight sacks a season is nothing to sneeze at.

  15. Eric Says:

Remember even sapp struggled his first season. Unlikely McCoy would have a big impact in 2010.

But i guess that matches the template for the long, onerous, painful, miserable rebuilding project before the dynasty of always above 9 wins starts. Naturally, the foundation is the upcoming ingenious draft.

  16. zech Says:

The vacation man of BSPN did a suh versus mccoy and put the numbers together and it seemed he perfer suh over mccoy just from the numbers u should check it out

  17. Joe Says:

    zech:

    Have a link?

To be honest, Joe’s more interested in intelligence, footwork, hands, technique, things of that nature. Sacks/tackles numbers can be twisted to prove anything one wants.

The two played in two totally different defenses and, as Brandon Carter pointed out, are two totally different types of tackles so comparing sack/tackles numbers, Joe isn’t sure is an apples-to-apples comparison.

McCoy, with the Bucs, could only get two sacks a year but if in the process he is pulling double- and triple-teams thus allowing defensive ends and inside backers to run free, that may mean much more than his few sack totals.

  18. JoeBucsSteveCampbell Says:

Good Lord, I pray that we have a DT in the near future that can give us 8 sacks a season.

8 sacks is a VERY good number for a DT.

  19. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Sapp also tried to show his signature move to Kong Suh , and Suh lifted Sapp up over his head and threw him over the boon microphone.

This of course was edited off of the NFL Network.

  20. Eric S Says:

It is probably too much to ask McCoy to be as good as Sapp. What about as good as Dave Pear? He was probably the Bucs second best DT of all time. Hopefully he can bring some attitude to that line.

  21. OAR Says:

Radio, What’s with all the Sapp hate?

  22. sgw94 Says:

You know I try to explain things here to people because with my background I know more than what most fans do. That’s not bragging, that’s just the truth. It’s no different than if a carpenter was trying to explain to you how to do some fixes around your house. You might be kind of handy in your own right but would you tell a carpenter that you know better than he does how to put a deck up?

That’s why I get annoyed with some people here who argue facts with me. I mean its one thing to have an opinion or make predictions, that’s fine. But if you are going to say this guy can do this or this guy can’t do that and I know you are wrong I really don’t have a lot of patience for that. ESPECIALLY when it comes to defensive linemen and defensive line play.

Now the thing of it is there are sports journalists who really don’t have much more actual football knowledge than fans. What they have is sources. People who tell them stuff which they can then report. But if you turned on film most of them couldn’t tell you the difference between a cut block and a post route. So when one of these cats are sticking strictly to numbers and stats what they are really telling you is they don’t know what the hell they are talking about.

Let me give you a for instance. Ndamukong Suh has never, I repeat NEVER played in a defense where he was a penetrator. That means nobody, not one single person, has ever actually seen him with their own two eyes get off the ball and get up the field in a gap the way we play our defense. So when somebody says “Well Suh will be as good or better than McCoy at being a penetrator” essentially they are full of shit. They have nothing to base than on besides abject speculation. I watched Suh at least 4 times this year and the one thing that numbers people can’t tell you is that many of his sacks were coverage sacks where the quarterback had no where to go and either tried to scramble or he finally came off a block to take them down. That doesn’t mean he can’t pass rush, but it does mean when you watch him on film he rarely makes pass rush moves and relys almost exclusively on brute strength.

Could he turn into a good pass rusher in the NFL? Sure. But me and any other guy who has played defensive line in the NFL would watch his film and have to wonder just how effective he will be when we hardly ever get to see him make a move on film.

Now people are free to choose to believe whomever they want to. But I just want to make it clear that just because someone is a sports journalist, even a famous one, doesn’t mean they know about football on the field.

  23. admin Says:

    Joe here,

    Amen.

  24. zech Says:

Joe go to vaction man nfc south blog and click more on suh versus mccoy and read some of his numbers he came up with and I would like to know what u think?

  25. BigMacAttack Says:

Right foot back. 1’st step: right foot in front. 2’nd step: left foot around with right arm coming over and down guard’s left hand. 3’rd step: right foot inside behind guard’s right leg. 4’th step: left foot toward QB as right hand comes up to deflect guard’s recovery. 5’th step: right foot to QB sack.

That is what I saw in slow motion. Sapp still is amazingly quick, just playiong around. He left McCoay standing still. Amazingly took the ladd to school with out McCoy moving at all. Incredible.

  26. Eric Says:

I don’t think anybody is going to have many “coverage sacks’ if the Goat is roaming the pasture this season.

Damn, maybe we should go with Berry. Kiffin and White like the kid, and we do play against some high powered passing attacks. Might have bigger impact than either Suh or Mccoy. No doubt he is suited for our defense and I have heard more than one alleged guru say he is the best overall player in this draft.

Chalk me up to being totally confused!

  27. Radio Mushmouth Says:

OAR..I’m just joking… but it’s a fact that Sapp is a an asshole of a human being who treats people badly. Anyone who has met him in public can attest to that , so I think he deserves any crap he recieves.

  28. sgw94 Says:

    @BigMacAttack

Good….but you forgot Sapps slapping McCoy’s outside shoulder with his left hand to keep him off balance and finish the move after he had knocked his outside hand down.

  29. OAR Says:

Mr White, You my friend are someone fans shouls and need to listen too. I do! Thanks again for all the awesome info and break downs. You da man!

  30. OAR Says:

Radio, What’s that? I can’t understand you, what with all that static on your airwaves.

  31. OAR Says:

oops…..”should” not “shouls” Damn fingers just washed them and can’t do a damn thing with them.

  32. McBuc Says:

@SGW…Well said! I wish you would post this on all of the newspaper sites.

  33. D-Rome Says:

Fascinating video. I love watching football but admittedly I never played the game. Now I understand what people on the radio and TV mean when they say that it’s not necessarily about size but fundamentals and technique.

  34. Joe Says:

    D-Rome:

Segments like this are why Joe is addicted to the NFL Network.

  35. BigMacAttack Says:

Thanks Steve. I saw that shoulder push too, but he was just so fluid how he did the whole 5 step move. It was all one continuous motion. That was lined up on the right side of center. Is it the opposite when lined up on the left guard. It also looks as if the guard could be very susceptible to an inside spin move if he trys to step outward to counter it. The word that comes to mind for Sapp is nimble. Maybe we should try to draft Sapp again at 36. He still can probably outplay McCoy or Suh, even today, and maybe for less money. LOL

  36. sgw94 Says:

    @BigMacAttack

Yes everything would be just the opposite on the other side of the center. As for a spin move, yeah it would be a great counter move off that but Sapp never felt comfortable doing spin moves for whatever reason.

  37. tampa2 Says:

    @sgw94

Steve, you are more knowledgable abut defense and can explain better than I have ever heard anyone explain football. You have to forgive some of us when it comes to Sapp. He was by far the best DT we’ve ever had in Tampa. But I am sure that you are aware of his reputation outside of football here in the Tampa area. He was a total asshole to fans, kids, and anyone else he ran into in a club. So while we give him credit for his ability, we cannot respect him as a person. At least I can’t because I seen the way he acted to a kid that asked for his autograph at a ball game. So try and understand when a Buc fan goes off where Sapp is concerned.

  38. JoeBucsSteveCampbell Says:

Steve-What move did you beat Kipp Vickers with in the 99 playoff game against Washington when you stripped Brad and changed to tone of the game? Was it just a straight speed rush?

By the way, I played against Kipp in high school.

  39. gotbbucs Says:

I wish every Bucs fan could see what you posted above Steve.
