“They’re Not Going To Do It”

April 13th, 2010

All the analysis of who the Bucs will draft with the No. 3 pick in next week’s draft is all a bunch of hot air to Ian Beckles, the former Bucs offensive lineman turned sports radio personality on WDAE-AM 620.

During the Ron and Ian Show on Monday, Beckles talked about how the Bucs passing on Santonio Holmes was another sign the team is avoiding players that will command a big payday.

And Beckles explained that is certain the Bucs will trade down out of the No. 3 pick to avoid the $30+ million guaranteed contract that draft slot will demand.

“I’m telling you. They’re not going to do it. No way [the Bucs keep the No. 3 pick],” Beckles said.

While Joe would place a small wager on the Bucs keeping the No. 3 pick, Joe would hardly be surprised if Team Glazer and personnel czar Mark Dominik dump the pick for a package of more picks and maybe a player or two.

As much as the Bucs have touted the depth of the draft, trading down would seem to fit in nicely with their new master plan.

Unfortunately, I tend to agree with him. I think the Bucs are praying that Suh and McCoy are gone by the 3rd pick so they don’t have to defend against the assault that will be coming their way from the fans and media, who at that point may turn on them like a pack of wild dogs. If Suh or McCoy are still on the board and the Bucs trade down, than I think that is the single, strongest piece of evidence that everything the Bucs have done thus far has been motivated by money as opposed to some master plan to improve the team.

i said it months ago on this website that it will be okung cuz he would be the cheapest one to sign now its either gonna be okung or trade down anything to save a little money

  3. d-money Says:

Trading down wouldn’t be the end of the world if it serves a purpose. If they were to trade down and still get someone like Eric Berry, pick up another 2nd round pick and still address the D-line then I think it would be understandable.

Having said that if they trade down anywhere past the 10th pick I might have to start getting on the cheap-o bandwagon.

  4. Eric Says:

“Master plan” or not, if they have an opportunity for Suh and trade down, gonna be some very upset bucs fans.

Whether that concerns them or not is another matter. Public opinion hasn’t swayed them so far, unless of course it is related to firing Jon Gruden.

  5. bucfanjeff Says:

Washington trading for McNabb severly hampered the Bucs ability to trade down. I think it all but eliminates the option. Expect the Bucs to take a DT with #3.

  6. Ian Says:

I have to agree with “d-money”. Getting Berry and yet another pick in the 2nd (giving us THREE 2nd rd picks) would be a WIN in my book.

  7. DH Says:

    NEWSFLASH,

You have to have someone to trade “WITH”….

  8. zech Says:

Other then denver I don’t see anyone who would wanna jump up to the 3rd overall pick and the price the other team would have to give up with that bein said if suh or mccoy r there u can see them take one of them!

  9. Louie Says:

Dominik: “You want to swap 1st round picks?”

New Orleans GM: “What else is it going to cost me?”

Dominik: “We want Jimmy Wilkerson back — you signed him real cheap, right?”

New Oleans GM: “No, you can’t have Jimmy. He had us put a no-trade-to-Tampa clause in his contract.”

Dominik: “Damn! OK, I’ll throw in one of our 2nd round picks.”

    New Orleans GM: “Deal!”

  10. zech Says:

I doubt dominick would trade with new orleans they would have to give up an awful lott to do it!

  11. Jason Says:

Ian Beckles tends to just spout out comments without really giving much thought to what he is saying or looking at the big picture. The Ron and Ian Show is really entertaining but I don’t listen for insight into the Bucs.

  12. Kirk Says:

Take the best player available. If they trade down and pick up more draft picks, fine. If they stand pat, then pick the best player available that fits the direction the team is attempting to move. (Strong defense or protect a young QB). Whatever the team does will be met with disdain and second guessing. So, they have a 50% percent chance of making some fans happy, or angry.

  13. Fatsacks Says:

are you serious!!!! you do not trade your 3rd pick!! you go with suh or mccoy! thats not even an option! Who cares about another pick in the 2nd rd?!?! We need that size and ability at the DT…if we trade the 3rd pick and suh or mccoy become stars and become great on other teams every one that is saying trade that pick are going to be jumping on that wagon of i cant believe we didnt get 1 of thos guys…instead we got this guy from joeblow college that tanked and we just drop to practice squad. If they want to save face and ticket sales and jersey sales! You go Suh at 3 if he is there! If not im just as fine with Mccoy!

Why would you go with Berry when we got Jones in the offseason?!!? The signing of jones would had made no sense then! The berry idea is a far reach and is not going to happen!

  14. acharlot5 Says:

so what if we do pick up suh or mccoy and they end up being a bust? then everyone will say oh yea we should have picked berry or traded down blah blah.. look noone knows how anything would play out im not against going for suh or mccoy but if we have a chance to trade down and get more picks you have to consider it.. nothing is ever set in stone in the NFL

  15. Kirk Says:

Any player picked in the draft is potentially a bust. The draft is a gamble. Pick and then hold your breath.

  16. creativefreak Says:

Has anyone considered the fact that maybe the reason they are not going after some of these big free agents is so they can use that money on the draft? Suh and McCoy are FANTASTIC players that are about as “can’t miss” as you can predict. You don’t pass on elite defensive line players when you need them as badly as we do. You just don’t…

  17. Kirk Says:

Hey freak….just what big name free agents are out there that would help this team in the long haul?

  18. Finerdetailz Says:

I agree Ron and Ian aren’t your best choices for insight on the Bucs. Their too busy studying for birthday challenges. Plus Ian let’s personal issues affect his job. After Gruden Fired him from his radio show, Ian began the charge of getting Guden out of here. How’s that working for ya. Ron is very entertaining but Ian is self absorbed. IMO.,

  19. Nick Says:

Joe the problem is that their new “master plan” as you call it is to be the cheapest owners in the league and stop at nothing to slash payroll and still expect fans to visit Raymond James on Sundays. Well that plan is a farse because they have miscalculated that educated fans will enlighten ones not so educated and stay away in droves from RJS until the ownership proves they want to field a contender and not a pretender. In fact it mystifies me just from a business sense how stupid their new strategy is. In other words if you pickup a few free agents (targeted ones who will help Josh Freeman etc) the fans will have some hope and reason to come to the stadium on Sundays. Maybe the Glazers are just banking on all of the fans from other teams just as the Culverhouses did for years. In fact every day that goes by this team is looking more like Hugh Culverhouse has risen from the grave and taken over.

  20. tampa2 Says:

I’ve been saying that for weeks. So I agree with Ian on that statement. These owners may well not keep the 3rd pick “just to keep from paying out the cash”! At this point, does anything they do surprise you?

  21. JimBuc Says:

Why do some of you continue to watch the Bucs if you actually believe the ownership wants to destroy the team?

  22. tampa2 Says:

    @Jimbuc,
Because we were here before Daddy Glazer was here, and before the 3 greedy Stooges took over, and we’ll be here when they leave. Why do you believe everything told to you in the Media? Can’t you see what is going on yourself, without having to drink the kool-aid? They may have ownership of the team, but the Bucs belong to Tampa Bay.
