Might Clayton Replace Sabby The Goat?

April 6th, 2010
Hey, this isnt funny. Ive seen Clayton knock down passes. Hes good.

"Hey, this isn't funny. I've seen Clayton knock down passes. He's good."

Perhaps the best take from the last session of the JoeBucsFan.com Radio Network came from former Bucs defensive end Steve White, who pens the popular Bull Rush column on this very Web site.

White made the case that the Bucs have seen enough from Michael Clayton and shouldn’t allow themselves to be duped by him performing well in OTAs and preseason — again.

“If you can’t tell that that guy is not an NFL receiver at this point, you need new eyes. Not glasses. You need something more than Lasik,” White said.

Joe couldn’t agree more.

So Joe has been searching for reasons Bucs personnel czar Mark Dominik would keep the blocking icon on the roster.

Now, Joe believes he has finally found a plausible reason to retain a receiver that can’t catch anymore: Clayton can play safety.

Why Nick Saban, Clayton’s college head coach at Louisiana State, said so himself recently to AL.com.

“Michael Clayton was our best receiver and the 16th guy picked in the draft, and that’s what we did with him one year,” Saban said. “He ended up playing over 25 plays on defense, mostly against Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

Now we’re talking. Clayton can be physical at safety and he doesn’t have to catch the ball, just knock it down, which he’s really good at.

Raheem The Dream’s a defensive backs coach …

First the Sean Jones signing, and now this. Things sure are looking grim for Sabby The Goat.

Clayton performed well in preseason? That’s news to me, far as I can tell the guy has never performed well in preseason. Even last year when he played a good bit, he couldn’t get enough seperation or make plays against 2nd and 3rd stringers.

Has Clayton had good practices in April and May when he is up against scrub corners he’ll never see again? Sure.

  3. Eric Says:

Our offense obviously can’t function without his blocking skills, so he will have to go it “both ways”.

Then again, maybe he already does? Could also explain why hes on the team.

Nah, Raheem is already married to Freeman.

Sabby is in no danger , he’s a solid special teamer

Damn that Saban – he’s the one who trained Clayhands to just swat those balls down. That explains a LOT about Michael.

So it must be that those cathes he HAS made were probably mistakes?

Put Clayton at TE, make gain about 15 pounds and put him at TE. My first choice is to let him go but if we must keep him make him a TE.

Clayton played one half of last years preseason games. the rest of the time he sat in the tub ith an “injury.” This guys a joke. CLANG.

  9. Mike Says:

Cool, maybe Sabby can play WR also. He can’t be much worse than what we have there now.

  10. BigMacAttack Says:

If Clayton is going to play safety then why can’t Freeman play Defensive End? He has good size and speed for a DE. Then switch Cadillac to Cornerback. Chris Hovan can play QB. He will be very hard to tackle. It can be the Wild-Beast formation. Jeremy Trueblood can punt and play running back. Blah blah blah. Saban is an punkbitch and Clayton is a bumb. Clayton needs to start counting telephone poles . Can you believe they spent a 1’st round pick on this POS? And they said Dexter Jackson was a bust. Clayton is Uber-Bust.

  11. chris Hovan Says:

Hey bigMac will you talk to Olson about that – i’d love to play QB!

lol………….This is so crazy that it just might work.

    It’s beautiful.
    What does Clayton excel at?
    a.) Blocking
    b.) Knocking passes down
