It Was Gerald McCoy Over Ndamukong Suh

April 28th, 2010

How good was Mark Dominik’s draft last week? So good, on paper, that the man is becoming a rock star of sorts.

First, Joe’s good friend and the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, “The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620, honored Dominik with a prime appearance on his radio show.

Then, Peter King paid homage with a good chunck of his weekly Tuesday edition of Monday Morning Quarterback devoted to Dominik.

Yesterday, none other than Jim Rome hosted Dominik on his widely popular national syncidated radio show, heard locally on WDAE-AM 620.

During yesterday’s Rome appearance, Dominik stated had the Bucs somehow landed the top overall pick, Gerald McCoy still would have been selected, even over manbeast Ndamukong Suh, so notes eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune.

“We knew we were in great shape with Gerald McCoy or Ndamukong Suh, but we were excited about McCoy because he’s the entire package. He’s a great fit for the 3-technique. We thought he was the best 3-technique on the board.”

As Michael David Smith, writing for ProFootballTalk.com pointed out, this quote will be good news to McCoy’s agent.

Joe also suspects this same quote will motivate McCoy to work like a crazed dog to prepare for the 2010 season.

Just because some hung over radio mouth invites you onto his show doesn’t make you the second coming of Bill Polian. The Dummy has made a few shrewd moves (unloading Gaines Adams for a two , McCown for a five and Sluggo for a seventh), but lhe has missed on just as many.

  2. d-money Says:

Thats funny. I happen to agree that Mccoy is the best fit for the Bucs.

But didn’t they say the same thing about taking Freeman first if they had the pick last year?

  3. BucFan South Tampa Says:

    Dom,
Outstanding draft!! A lot better than Gruden and Brice Allen’s the last seven years. You at least did some research and put your ego in check. I didnt see this years version of Dexter Jackson in the draft…thats good. Wyche, Dungy, Gruden were all great, but you now have given Rah some excellent talent to compete with.
The haters that hang around here will all be the first ones on the Bucs bandwagon late in the season.
    See you in Dallas.

  4. Lakeland Bob Says:

Whens the last time Bruce Allen was applauded for a good draft?

    Easy answer,Never.

  5. bucfanjeff Says:

Wasn’t it obvious to everybody? It was to me.
Regardless, he’s ours now and I look forward to OTA’s and camp.
To bad there isn’t sh!t for football news the next 3 months.

Please let’s not give kudo toDominick for trading Leftwich for a 7th.
This transaction was concluded 1 day before Rottensberger was suspended for 6 games. Had he waited 1 more day to pull the trigger wouldn’t Leftwich command a higher price?

  7. d-money Says:

    up the gut,

He should get credit for that trade.

Everyone and their mother knows that Leftwich would have eventually been cut. The steelers could have just waited until then to sign him.

  8. gruss222 Says:

    @up the gut

I would be pretty amazed if the head offices of both teams did not already have knowledge of the forthcoming suspension when this trade was made. That is what gave 7th round value to the trade. As stated by d-money, the Steelers could have sat pat with Batch and waited for Leftwich’s release.

I heard if The Bucs had the first 10 picks of the draft… they would have picked all the players they picked any way…

  10. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Plenty of people applauded some of Allen’s drafts the day after. especially on the message boards. NO one questioned the Gaines Adams pick, for example , and I remember people laughing and saying what an idiot Gruden was for wanting to trade up and get Calvin Johnson. The sentiment was , “thank god Allen listened to Monte”… well in hindsight it looks like Gruden was right.

What people say now doesn’t mean shit. The real question is whether they applaud 3 years down the road.

  11. Donny Says:

Duemig “honored” Dominik with having him on his show?? Are you kidding me? Duemig spends most of his days on his knees begging the Bucs to come on his show. I think Dominik did Duemig the favor, or is that what you meant?

(FYI Donny, first Joe thanks you very much for posting. But per Joe’s contract with Clear Channel, cannot personally attack Clear Channel on-air personalities. You can disagree all you want with them, just no personal attacks. Thanks — Joe.)

  12. JimBuc Says:

Radio Mushmouth — that is more of an indictment of message boards than a defense of Gruden or Allen 🙂

  13. Mr. Lucky Says:

    Hey wanna motivate McCoy?

How many McCoy jersey’s have been sold?

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Tim-Tebow-is-already-setting-records;_ylt=AqubE2_LwpVuP7THghr4pV9DubYF?urn=nfl,237105

TEBOW has broken the record in rookie jersey sales and it hasn’t even been 1 week since he was drafted!!!!!!

The Glazers are thinking….all those sales we lost…..

  14. BucFan South Tampa Says:

Great metric for determining football greatness. He is up there with Romo jerseys, McNabb jerseys, and Cutler jerseys all of whom have never won a Super Bowl.
Besides everyone knows the jerseys are being bought by the Gator Nation cashing in their unemployment checks
