Bucs History Of Fifth Round Picks Pretty Dismal
April 14th, 2010Joe is still quite irked that the Bucs didn’t take a fifth round flyer on Santonio Holmes when the Steelers shopped him around Saturday night.
So Joe decided to do some research to determine just how valuable this fifth round pick is that Bucs general manager Mark Dominik is holding onto as if it’s the Hope Diamond.
Below is every Bucs fifth round pick in franchise history:

Pretty damned depressing, isn’t it, that a superior talent like Santonio Holmes was there for the taking for a fifth round pick, and the Bucs decided that the talent like the players documented above is a better alternative?
Best as Joe can tell, Dotson may have had the best impact in the NFL… for the Packers! Fusina actually won a league championship however, hoisting a trophy in final victory… in the USFL! Jermaine Phillips was pretty good; not so much as a linebacker. Hockstein did well… for the Patriots!
Beckles is best remembered as a sports radio personality!
Joe keeps hearing the Bucs talk about how deep this draft is and that as a result, cannot give up any draft picks. Charley Casserly, former Washington and Houston general manager, claims this is the deepest draft since 1983, in which the last two guys drafted in the first round, Dan Marino and Darrell Green, are in the Hall of Fame.
The Bucs pick in that vaunted 1983 draft, Chickillo, had about as much impact for the Bucs as Joe has had.
This is just damned depressing.

ESPN reporting that Brandon Marshall is going to be Traded to the Miami Dolphins for a mere 2nd round pick. Are you kidding me.. Time to sound off Buc Fans.. Dominik you freakin loser.. what are you doing?
April 14th, 2010 at 8:04 am
I was about to comment on this as well, A 2ND FOR MARSHALL, HOW DID WE NOT POUNCE ON THIS….
April 14th, 2010 at 8:04 am
I know the above article is not related but just wanted to get that out there.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:05 am
2010 2nd and 2011 2nd. Still would gladly take the deal.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:07 am
It is also being reported that Marshall will sign the most lucrative wide reciever contract in league history. Picks aside, the contract issue would have, in and of itself, kept this deal from ever happening here.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:13 am
winlow was signed to the most expensive TE so I hope that would not have been an issue. What a joke this team is turning into.. I only dream if Gruden were here.. We would have Mcnab, Holmes, and Marshall and still have the ability to draft either Suh or Mccoy. Joe…. make sure you listen to the Big Dog cause I promise he will call everyone idiots again that think the Bucs should have made this move.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:14 am
You want depressig?
Our starting wide receivers caught a grand total of three touchdown passes last year.
You can also look at the bucs wide receiver pics and see such illustrious names as Green, Anthony, Clayton, Jackson etc. All high selections, all busts.
Yet somehow our scouting department is going to spontaneously become great and select a number one wide out in this draft.
Its getting beyond disgusting and moving into totally pathetic.
Man that Bill Parcels, what an idiot, not building through the draft and all.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:18 am
Beware..all POSITIVE buc fans… stay away.. It’s going to get ugly today..
April 14th, 2010 at 8:28 am
Hey Joe, I’m telling my age, but if memory serves correct, Steve Wilson wasn’t that bad at tackle. But then again, the 1st QB we ever had that didn’t get “knocked out of a game” was Steve Spurrier. So maybe has was! lol
April 14th, 2010 at 8:31 am
2nd round 2010, 2nd round 2011 and Marshall is demanding the most “lucrative” contract in NFL wide receiver history.
With his history of issues and suspensions, he does not deserve that contract. When your own team mates vote for you to be benched during a crucial game, you are not worth this asking price!
April 14th, 2010 at 8:34 am
Gotta agree with Gruss222 here.
Marshall’s multiple onfield/offfield problems scared Joe. Trading two seconds, including this year’s? That’s an awfully big bite to take hoping this guy suddenly becomes an angel overnight.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:36 am
So gruss. The Dolphins and Jets got better and we can rest knowing we didn’t get any trouble maker. Even though Marshall had more catches in 1 game than our blocking Icon.. I can sleep better. And we even got rid of trouble make AB.. Wow.. Maybe we will draft Tebow.. and instead of watching games.. we can all go to church and pray the Bucs get better. Ridiculous!!!
April 14th, 2010 at 8:39 am
Marshall’s demanding in excess of 10 million per year on a multi-year deal. Give me a break!
Grant it, he is one talented kid but absolutely he does not deserve that type of deal with his baggage.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:39 am
The only thing that would have scared me Joe is that Dominik and Rah would not have been able to handle Marshall. They would have been scared. But we can all imagine how this team might have looked if Gruden/Allen were still here. Marshall would have been here.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:46 am
@Brad How do we know the Jets and Dolphins got better with these two moves?
On paper, absolutely. But one more Bong-water-bubble and every person will be condemning the Jets for making a foolish and stupid trade for a player headed for a full year suspension.
Every off season Marshall has came to Florida and has left under some type of police investigation with potential league suspensions to follow. Oh yeah, let’s bring him back to Florida full time and he’ll change his ways. Give me a break. He’s only one south beach party bar fight away from his implosion.
If it works for either one of them, great, good for them. Is either one worth the risk? At a 5th round selection Holmes MAY have been worth the risk. This trade for Marshall and the most “lucrative” deal demand? ASOLUTELY NOT!
April 14th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Wrote about that Monday.
Not sure if Marshall would be here but Holmes and likely McNabb sure as hell would.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Joe,
Can you imagine if the Bucs do trade down with Suh or McCoy on the board at #3 next Thursday? Damn, your server might not be able to handle the traffic. There might not be enough Caybrew to calm down the angry mob. Quick more Rachael Watson, photos. The mob is uncontrollable. LMAO.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:49 am
The mob will be uncontrollable if they draft a guy they don’t need as some have hinted (Okung)
April 14th, 2010 at 8:56 am
Todd Wright just had a dynamite point on Twitter:
Redskins gave up less for a Pro Bowl quarterback who is a model human being.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:57 am
Joe,
So true. However, there is a potential bright side. Golden Tate appears now more in reach for the Bucs with Dolphins filling their WR needs.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:59 am
Joe: and he could have been here too!!
April 14th, 2010 at 9:03 am
Joe,
In all seriousness, you guys do a great job on this website. Glad to hear you getting exposure on the radio. Hopefully, the Bucs will win a few more games next year and look forward to seeing you on NFL network.
April 14th, 2010 at 9:03 am
I’ll say this, Dominik is painting himself in a corner (which I can’t wait till we move on). If every player in the up coming draft is not playing next year (at least through round 5), then this draft will be considered a bust. He is banking that by some miracle the Bucs are going to have the best draft ever.. What a plan.
April 14th, 2010 at 9:08 am
Thanks Finerdetailz, much appreciated!
Today WDAE-AM 620, tomorrow the NFL Network… the White House in 2012!
April 14th, 2010 at 9:17 am
Well the commish on 620 thinks the if Marshall is good enough for Bill Parcells he’s should be good enough for the Bucs.
April 14th, 2010 at 9:26 am
gruss222:
Yeah, but for a fifth round pick (please read this post above for what a fifth round pick will get you)? Chances are Holmes doesn’t get busted for weed again are probably better than a fifth round pick making a team.
Even if a fifth round pick does make a team, very, very, very long shot he has an impact that Holmes can have on an offense.
Joe will take that gamble (fifth round pick for Holmes) any day of the week and so should have Mark Dominik. It’s one thing if you have a wide receiver to bank on (which most teams actually do). The Bucs do not.
That’s borderline irresponsible for Dominik to not take a stab at Holmes for that price.
April 14th, 2010 at 9:51 am
Pearl River Community College!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a hotbed of NFl talent! I wonder if Dom had input into that one!
Joe, you can even make a list of fifth round draft choices hilariously funny.
I might even put down the loaded handgun i had planned on putting to my head over the Marshall/Holmes debacles and grab a Caybrew!
April 14th, 2010 at 9:53 am
Joe,
“If it works for either one of them, great, good for them. Is either one worth the risk? At a 5th round selection Holmes MAY have been worth the risk. This trade for Marshall and the most “lucrative” deal demand? ASOLUTELY NOT!”
I agree with the risk is worth potential reward on the Holmes trade. Just as you outlined in this post. I do not believe Marshall was worth what was given, when you factor in his contract demands and potential for more off field issues.
April 14th, 2010 at 11:05 am
Steve Wilson and Ian Beckles were actually good picks who had decent careers as starters. I think Beckles was an Iowa product as well, not from Indiana. Jermaine Phillips wasn’t bad, and Josh Johnson has never been given much of a chance though I like what I have seen. Chuck Fusina was actually a legend in the USFL and William Howard was a starter at FB with the great Lars Tate at RB. So yeah, point taken, these guys for the most part were not too great.
April 14th, 2010 at 11:07 am
Beckles is a Hoosier. He may have played juco ball in Iowa but he’s a Hoosier.
April 14th, 2010 at 12:13 pm
Beckles was definitely a Hoosier. He mentions it every so often on the radio. Wilson was a good player. He was the starting C for the Bucs for many years. Dotson was a good player for the Bucs. I was quite upset when he left.
Holmes was worth the risk for a 5th. Even with him suspended for the first 4 games, he is worth it. Comparing the Marshall and McNaab trades is a bit silly. McNaab is about 10 years older than Marshall, so he won’t be around as long as Marshall. If McNaab was say 5 years younger, I can see the comparison being valid.
As one poster has stated, Dominik is painting himself in a corner. This draft has been very productive or else. Numerous opportunities to get a top flight receiver and Dominik passes them all up. Hopefully Golden Tate is worth it.
April 14th, 2010 at 5:33 pm
Joe,
If Gruden was still here, I know Bryant would have stayed, and Gruden would have been all over Holmes, and McNabb as well. lol
