Treasonous Olson Flirted With Trojans

February 3rd, 2010

"Olie, man, you dissed me. Can't you see what we're building here?"

Joe just can’t figure out why offensive coordinator Greg Olson, as reported by Tom Dienhart of Rivals.com, had recent discussions with the Kiffin clan about taking the same position for the University of Southern California.

What would possess Olson to even consider leaving the Bucs right now?

Olson has been handed the Bucs’ offense in 2010. It’s all his. And Olson has a promising young quarterback to groom, who, if successful, could catapult him into becoming a head coach candidate in the NFL.

On the surface, that seems to be immensely better — and potentially much higher paying — than living in the USC film room and giving up playcalling duties to Lane Kiffin.

So Joe has to wonder, “What does Olson know?”

Perhaps Olson knows the Bucs won’t make a bid for Antonio Bryant, won’t draft a receiver with their first two picks, and will take on 2010 with a worse receiving corps than they trotted out last season.

Maybe that was enough to have him sniffing around for work.

Perhaps Olson has had philosophical clashes with Raheem The Dream? Maybe he wanted to pick his own quarterbacks coach?

Something made Olson look around. How many other NFL offensive coordinators, who truly have control of an offense like Olson does, entertain assistant offers in the college ranks? Joe can’t think of one.

Yes, Joe knows that Olson may have looked around out of concern that there would be no NFL in 2011. But that is unlikely. And Joe just doesn’t see that as a compelling reason to stain his reputation within the Bucs organization and put his commitment here up for debate.

This doesn’t sit well with Joe at all. Something here stinks real bad. Joe’s just not sure what it is.

Does seem a bit odd, almost like he feels the team is going to struggle mightily again this year. If enough improvement isn’t shown, maybe Olson has a strong feeling the team will do a clean-sweep with the staff after the 2010 season and start fresh after the lockout. There are definitely some winnable games on the schedule this year, so the record should be improved.

Look, I have told you that Bates will be the fall guy for this past season, Now The Realist will state the only question for next season. Does Raheem get fired at the end of next season, or during the season.

The Bucs are the Big-Lots of the NFL.
    Olson knows this.

Who wants to work for a company that’s cutting costs to the bone?
    Certainly not me…..

…..unfortunetly I expect a bad team in 2010, TV blackouts and
    no hope for the future.

I would even go so far as to say that the owners are waiting out the lease
on Ray-Jay so they can finally move to LA.
I really think that is the master plan.

  4. BigMacAttack Says:

Olson has already been promoted to his level of incompetence and unless he has a real confidence problem I don’t see why he would look elsewhere. The thing that stinks is Lane Kiffin. You can smell his sorry ass all the way from Mexifornia. The guy is true slug. He should change his name to Lurch or Shambles, because of the trail of bedlam he leaves in his wake. He’s like Pigpen on Charlie Brown with a dark cloud of dust all around him. I think Lane won’t last at USC, He will say something very stupid to offend the AD or some protected group of misfits there and will be out on his can, along with Barry, Monte and crew. The question in my mind is what High School team will be Lane’s final resting place and will Monte digress further with his diabolical deadbeat son. Lane had to have been adopted or the Doctor switched babies on Monte. I don’t think much of Olson either or his performance in 09’and bird of a feather flock together. Maybe there will be an oil spill at USC

  5. Radio Mushmouth Says:

BigMac , I think you give Monte too much credit. He is a dirt-bag also.

Let’s not forget Monte BAILED on our defense in the middle of a playoff run. Like father like son if you ask me….

As far as Olson goes , I don’t know. Let’s hope this isn’t a foreshadow of another Chernobyl, and is just a coach exploring all his options.

  6. Jeff Says:

The probability that the offense does worse is high. No AB potentially, Stovall and Stroughter doesn’t scare any DC, and even if we draft a stud WR – he’ll lack experience. That, to me, doesn’t build off of last year – it’s start to build this year. Olsen is being dealt a bad hand to start off with, combine that with the CBA issue – and who can blame him.

  7. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

For the conspiracy nuts out there: the Kiffins and Olson will be reunited when the Bucs move to LA and maybe Olson wanted to get to Cali early hahahahahaha!

  8. justin F Says:

bucs cant move to la till 2025 so we still got a while to go

  9. justin F Says:

plus they already listed the first seven team that would be the first choices to move to la and the bucs were not on the list bucs are not moving anywhere if the cheap spending keeps coming by the glazers they will be forced to sell the team within 2-3 years

  10. Vince Says:

Suddenly everyone is possessive about an OC that nobody supposely wants anyway? Hypocrisy at is highest.

  11. B From O-Town Says:

Raheem Morris is what stinks! HELLO? Anybody home?

Raheem and Dummynick fired 2 coordinators in less than a year, called their players out during press conferences, chased away Joe Barry… look, the list keeps growing. NO ONE wants to coach under Raheem…. and no Free Agent will want to play for Raheem… and the owners don’t want to spend, they want to test the floorless, salary uncapped year… to make up for no ticket sales. In the end, the Glazer’s will still get theirs.

  12. JDouble Says:

Maybe Olsen wasn’t looking for anything. Maybe he and Kiffin, who are friends, got together over dinner and it was brought up my Kiffin and quickly shot down. I hate stiries like this. All speculation with no facts. All it does is give the haters more to hate on.

  13. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

More on the Glazers master plan: (should be read while listening to the x-files theme music) the Glazers will sell manchester U then they will move the Bucs to LA the Rams and Bucs will switch divisions, meanwhile the Glazers will buy the Rays and move the team from St.pete to the empty Bucs stadium.

  14. tnew Says:

    Agreed Vince,
Doesn’t overly bother or surprise me. Olson knows he is one year away from walking the short plank this year barring some sort of miracle. This team is going to be poor…3-13 with no big changes in coaching or personell. You are your record. So next season and we go out and get some breaks and go 6-10 with our easier schedule (we think). Some changes will be made at that point. Olson knows he will likely be part of that.

  15. D-money Says:

    Vince,

“Suddenly everyone is possessive about an OC that nobody supposely wants anyway? Hypocrisy at is highest.”

    I couldn’t agree more.

  16. Dave Says:

    Not a good sign

  17. Jake Says:

Maybe Olson is bright enough to figure out that the Glazers are liars and that Dominik is the voice of the liars, that the Glazers will do little or nothing financially to improve the quality of talent on this team and at the end of the year he will be the fall guy for a crappy offensive product.

  18. Mr. Lucky Says:

    Hey how about this:

When you go for a “job interview” your travel expenses are TAX DEDUCTABLE. This was a tax write off trip for Olson. Nothing more, nothing less.

  19. Mark Says:

Or MAYBE the Kiffin’s contacted Olson to gauge his interest, he said no? Could that be? Seriously.

  20. Chuck Says:

You are looking too far into this. And NO coach goes into a season saying “well, we are gonna suck so I should look for a new gig”, they have great egos. Lane and Olsen know each other, and Monte and Olsen have worked together. Maybe Monte has the same respect for Olsen that Morris does and extended a branch. Maybe nothing happened at all.

  21. OAR Says:

    My second cousin’s girlfriend’s mother’s ex-boyfriend’s father said……………Blah, blah, blah, whatever.

  22. Eric Says:

Who the heck would want to leave the Dream’s staff? A once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from one of the true masters of the game……………………..and help on being the best “self” you can be. Awesome!

  23. Rob Says:

Is it ever to early to jump off of a sinking ship? We have no wide receivers. The offensive line is not as good as we thought it was. We have a 2nd year quarterback who hasnt proven anything yet. We’re almost guaranteed to go heavy on the defensive side of the ball in this year’s draft. Oh, did I mention that we have owners who arent willing to part ways with $1 heading towards an uncapped (ceiling or FLOOR) year. There could potentially be a work stoppage in 2011, or if the Bucs are awful again this year he could end up being fired. I’d think about leaving for SC. There’s the possibility to have a steady paycheck for 10 years, and compete for a national title every season in sunny Southern California.
