Rams GM: “I Have Not Talked To” Bucs… Yet

February 22nd, 2010

Bucs fans who got all giddy when rumors popped over the weekend that the Bucs and Rams were going to swap first round picks, enabling the Bucs to choose from manbeast Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy, well, you are probably a victim of premature jockularity.

Participating in a live chat on NFL.com this afternoon, Rams general manager Billy Devaney flatly denied talking to the Bucs about a trade — or anything — but didn’t rule out such a transaction.

Bert, Spanish Lake, Mo.

With Tampa Bay proposing a trade for our 1st overall pick, and we would receive their 1st and 3rd round pick and Josh Johnson. I feel we should trade with Tampa and then propose a trade with Washington for their first round pick( Since they want Bradford). We need all the help we can and this would free up a lot of salary space. What do you think?

General Manager Billy Devaney, Stlouisrams.com

I am being completely honest when I say I have not talked to anyone in Tampa Bay. I’m not saying that won’t happen at some point but to date there is absolutely nothing going on.

Well, that’s actually encouraging. Devaney certainly left the door open for Mark Dominik to swing a deal.

Now the question is, will Dominik call?

This is the most convincing thing I’ve heard since Obama claimed a tax cut for 95% of us.

    I don’t buy it.

There are discussions going on… whether they are close to any sort of deal is another matter. Probably not, and hence the denial…

  2. Jake Says:

There are discussions going on..most likely discussions between Kevin Demoff and his old pal Mark Dominik comparing notes on creative ways to cut payroll. For those of you that don’t know, Kevin Demoff is the former bean counter of the Bucs and true architect of “The Plan” and presently executive vice president of football operations for the Rams.

  3. Tommy Boy Says:

    Joe,

Call for what? Why is it encouraging? If they want our 1st, 3rd, and Johnson then they are nuts. When this rumor first came out you were againt (as should we all) but now you find it encouraging? Fickle Joe.

  4. Eric Says:

I agree, why is this encouraging? Cause the Ram dude said he would talk to the Bucs if they called? Of course they will talk to any team about the pic, that doesn’t mean didly squat.

Jake, I take it the “Demof plan” is to suck really, really bad for a long time? If so, the Bucs are following it to perfection.

  5. DAve Says:

Man I hope the talks are NOT true.

The BUcs need to TRADE DOWN.

The more picks in this very deep draft the better. No reason to give up picks and put their eggs in one basket.

  6. zech Says:

I say make the trade johnson isn’t that good of a backup and plus I rather have a veteran qb as a backup like pennington. If we can get suh that would awsome and dominik needs to talk to the rams and make the deal!!

  7. bucfanjeff Says:

Why trade up when you can probably get McCoy with the #3 pick? In the long run, he’s probably a better fit for less money. I think we roll the dice…

  8. zech Says:

Its not up to us if raheem the dream is in love with suh they’ll make the trade to get him its that simple! Of course like to see the bucs pick up more picks but I just don’t see raheem and dominik passen on the chance to get a dominant D-tackle

  9. JDouble Says:

    bucfanjeff:

Cause you probably CANT get McCoy at #3. Are biggest need by far is a great DT to anchor D-line, and it just so happens the two best guys in the draft are DTs. If we don’t get one this draft will be a failure and Dominik can clean out his desk.

Jake is right, if there are talks going on, it is between Demoff and Dom….so techniically Billy Devaney is telling the truth. He himself has not talked to the Bucs.

I can’t even comprehend how some Buc fans think a 3rd rounder and JJ is too much to get Suh. A great DT like Suh will mean much more to our team than anyone we get in the 3rd, and while JJ has potential and I like him alot…there shouldn’t even be a hesitation if it means we land Suh.

  10. zech Says:

I like to see the bucs trade ward to san diego maybe for a 2 and a 3 round pick and might as well throw clayton in there as well!

  11. up the gut Says:

Ward to S.D. for a 2nd rd pick. Ward and Clayton together to S.D. net a 4th Rd pick

  12. Eric Says:

Lets trade the Dream, his bride, and Michael Clayton, to any team who will take them, then hire whoever is Coach at Plant High School to run the team…………………….bet we would do better.

  13. RickP Says:

Just found JoeBucsFan over the weekend. Can’t believe I’ve been missing out for all this time. Joe, you really have something here. Awesome.

  14. BigMacAttack Says:

Nothing in this trade scenario helps the Bucs. I say we wait and see how the Big Boys perform at the Combine to get a better feel for their athleticism. Then make the choice to go up, down or stay at #3. If the Bucs were just one player away, I could see trading up, but they are many prayers away so trading down or staying put makes the most sense. As for prayers, Michael Clayton needs a Miracle…or two.

  15. RustyRhino Says:

I for one am hoping that we DO NOT trade Josh Johnson he has been here for 2 years right? Can anyone tell me what reps he has gotten in Training Camp OTA’s in those Two Years? His first year Training Camp and OTA’s we had Grandpa Garcia and Grandpa Greise with McCown in the QB equation, what did that leave for Johnson? not much. Last Year we had McCown and Grandpa Lead foot Leftwich “competing” and Freeman taking all the rest, again leaving Johnson with little to no reps. Maybe if we can keep him and not trade him to another team he might actually get some Reps this training camp and OTA’s. Then we might actually see if he has something worth keeping. I like it that he is FAST and has a good arm!! and him and Freeman are both good at running with the football. Call me crazy but would this not be something else that our opponents NEED to plan for, and if (i hope not) Freeman gets hurt we can keep our Bootlegs and QB roll-outs in our play book. Sure Johnson played a couple games and for me i thought he did ok, as i recall our “d” did little to help him out. So we did not win any of his games but we didn’t win any with Leftwich either… I recall another QB who was an ok runner with a good arm who we traded and he went on to win a Super Bowl, we all do remember Steve Young don’t we? (before i hear about it J. Johnson is not yet as good as S. Young, but no one thought much of Steve either did they before we traded him he held the clipboard for Montana. I just don’t want that to happen again)
Just how i see it out here in Arizona.

  16. Eric Says:

With all the holes this team has, back up QB is not a big issue. This isnt the 1972 Dolphins. If we can pick up Suh by switching pics with the Rams, plus JJ and a third rounder, i say do it. The last time the Bucs used the first overall pic on a DL, it worked out pretty good.

  17. zech Says:

I’m hopin the bucs trade up but I also feel that the bucs should trade down and pick up more picks so we can make trades and pick up more players!

  18. Joe Says:

    Guys:

Joe wrote “encouraging” because dialogue is always good.

If Mark Dominik can pilpher a second round pick for Gaines Adams, what might he get for, say, Michael Clayton?

  19. Joe Says:

    RickP:

Thanks very much for the kind words. Joe appreciates it.

Please tell your Bucs friends about Joe.

  20. zech Says:

Joe, I love everything on your sit I’m a big fan! Some people thought that the bucs didn’t get enough for gaines adams I think it was jaws or someone who said that the bucs shoulda got more for him but never the less I think dominik could get more for clayton he should do it! I also believe that if they can get suh for their 1rstand a 3rd round pick and jj I would do it just becuse that’s what we need a stud d-tackle and it makes perfect sense!

  21. Joe Says:

    zech:

    Thanks for the kind words.

So far, granted with a short body of work, Dominik seems to be pretty good on the trade market.

Getting a second round pick for a guy that couldn’t start for one of the worst defenses in the NFL is pretty damn good job by Dominik.

  22. JDouble Says:

So I know Dom said we wouldn’t be big players in FA, but man I sure would like to see us sign Antrell Rolle or Dunte Robinson! Both of those guys would be great fits in Tampa and are still young.
