Maurice Stovall’s Salary Doubled

When the Bucs tendered wide receiver Maurice Stovall last week, it was Christmas in February for Stovall.
That’s because he had his salary doubled, per Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune.
Stovall was a third-round pick of the Bucs in 2006 and he was given an original draft position tender, which carries with it a $1.176 million salary for 2010 .
Stovall is hardly an All-Pro receiver, instead he’s dynamite on special teams. Still, he’s worth more than Michael Clayton.
Let’s do some quick math:
In 2009, Stovall had his best season in his four years with the Bucs. He had 15 catches and a touchdown for 366 yards, an average of 15.3 yards a catch.
In 2009, Michael Clayton had 16 catches (and too many drops to count) for 230 yards and a touchdown for an average of 14.4 yards a catch.
To be fair, Joe wasn’t able to retrieve any blocking information about Stovall.

A player who is a special teams ace , and can contribute as a 3rd WR also , is pretty much a bargain at 1 million dollars.
No problems with the tender.

Mo. let’s se some of that reckless, suicide play at wideout as we see from you on special teams. If you play with the same reckless abandon you will soon be off special teams.
Since you can get off the jam on punt coverage you should be very difficult to knock off your pass route.
Have a big year we need it.

Mo is a pretty good blocker too. He’s no Clayton, but I’ll take the ST play and ability to catch more passes than you drop as consolation.
How it’s taken this guy so long to translate to the NFL is beyond me though. He’s got a good work ethic, great frame/size and enough speed to get the job done but can’t seem to put it together.

The way I figure it, there are about 12 recievers that are projected to go between the end of the 1st round, and the middle of the 3rd. If we can use two of our three picks in that area of the draft to get two of those recievers, and then drop Clayton…. we should be good to go.
I like Golden Tate, Demaryius Thomas, Damian Williams, Mike Williams, Taylor Price, Marty Gilyard, and Jordan Shipley. Put any two of those guys with Stroughter, Stovall, and Winslow, and we should have a good young group of guys for Freeman to grow and develope with.
Guys I don’t like are Dez Bryant, Arrelious Benn, Dezmond Briscoe, Brandon LaFell, Riley Cooper, and Jacoby Ford. I dislike them all for different reasons, but I hope we don’t draft any of these guys.

As to Dez Bryant, does it worry anybody that suspension he got for lying to the NCAA investigators?
I also noticed he pulled a hamstring and didn’t run at the combine. Could be some red flags on him, although he is an awesome athlete, obviously. Dude is cut.
Im still hopeful of a Brandon Marshall trade, id be really nervous about going into the season with two rookies, plus Stovall and Stroughter. Of course, I am already nervous……..

First time poster. Love this website joe, keep up the good work, I can’t get enough. As for Stovall, I think the tender was an excellent move. I’m hoping he’ll make a big jump this year and provide Freeman a big target to throw to, especially in the endzone. But I’m not sold on the idea of drafting a wr with one of our first 3 picks. We need to get back to playing defense and drafting that side of the ball is a good choice. I think we need to bring in a big time wideout just not through the draft. Either through free agency or a trade, but Freeman needs a reliable outlet, a guy he knows he can trust when he feels pressured, and someone that has been in the league a few years to help him and our other wr’s develop. Wtih Bryant gone we need to bring in a vet at wr.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to draft guys in the top ten that have question marks with thier character or intelligence. Dez Bryant has question marks at both.

I like dez bryant I think he has the best hands and he is a playmaker and that’s what the bucs need at reciever. Golden tate he what 5’10. Not really a playmaker and I wouldn’t draft gilyard to me he’s like a micheal clayton. I will be ok with whatever the bucs do because its dominik and the dreams butt if they fail!

Everyone has there opinion. I think Bryant and Thomas sound dumb as hell in interviews and seriously question thier intelligence. Might take a chance on a dumb kid with talent in the 2nd (Thomas) but I’d never take that chance on a top ten guy (Bryant) Especially whe he is a liar that hasn’t played football in over a year.
Golden Tate is smarter, stronger, faster, and more of a play maker. Who cares if he is a few inches shorter? It’s not like he is frail or anyhting.

I think Tate is the #1 reciever in this draft and Damian Williams is the #2. Of course I’m factoring in character and intelligence. Laugh now, but in 3 or 4 years we’ll see.

When was the last time a team went into the season with rookies as their top two wide outs and had any success?

Me, I hate taking WRs in the first round; too many are busts, & you can find them later if you know what you are doing–Marques Colston , 7th round;Pierre Garcon, 6th round;Miles Austin, free agent (undrafted). There are better examples but that is what I came up with off the top of my head.
Notwithstanding, I sorta agree with JDouble; I would be a happy camper if the Bucs used 2b on Demaryious Thomas or Golden Tate & turned around & selected Jordan Shipley top of the third.
There is a WR everyone is forgetting about, Mark Bradley, picked up on waivers late in the season (cut for dropping a pass in the end zone).Not the second coming of Jerry Rice, but he was the Chiefs’ #2 wideout, & caught 54 passes for 700 yards in 14 starts over 2008-9, with 5 TDs. Has a good combo of size & speed per “Pro Football Weekly”, & they use words like “super athleticism” also. Not tendered thus far AFAIK.

Stovall isn’t bad. Good special teams guy. I would say that he has been a disappointment. The guy was drafted in the 3rd round and he has only caught 44 passes. That is terrible. I know Gruden and the Bucs expected a lot more from him. The Bucs did need to keep him since they have no one else on the team. It looks like though he will never be higher than #3 receiver on this team.
BTW Stovall had 24 catches last season. The rapist was the one who had 15 catches.

I’d be wary of the Marshall trade. The still has demons from his ex teammate Williams death. Not to mention the fact that he basically admitted he was the target in the shooting, not Williams. I like his talent and potential for greatness but he obviously has off field issues that aren’t likely to go away, ever. I hope he can keep himself straight but it seems more likely that the guilt he still feels is going to be his demise.
That said I’d be open to trading for Boldin. He’s better than any other WR in the 2nd round, which is what I’d offer for him. He does have injury concerns but what WR doesn’t? Plus he recovers quickly and provides leadership that a rookie can’t. Trade for him and draft one with the other 2nd or 3rd.

What would be disastrous is rookie + rookie + Stovall + Stroughter. Or rookie + Clayton + Stovall + stroughter.
That would really be unfair to Mr. Freeman. I don’t think even Dominik and the Dream would try to go into an NFl season with that.

Anyone watch the college skills. Before the superbowl anyone watch dez bryant and see the big hands he has . I think he would look good in peweter I wouldn’t mind Boldin and dez bryant ! Two legit deep threats!

JDouble brought up a good point that Dez Bryant only played what, two games this past season? That’s a lot of time off for a guy, and he’s already injury prone. Stick with using 2B and the 3rd Rounder on WRs.

If dez bryant comes out and blows everybody away at his pro day then I can not see raheem passin on him I also like shipley in the 2nd round ! There’s no way shipley slips to the 3rd round becuse either dallas or houston will pick him! Like I said its on raheem and dominik to save there job and give freemen targets to throw to that can catch the ball!

Dez Bryant has too many red flags to take top ten. Especially when there are so many solid WRs in the 2nd that could very well end up being better than Dez.

Who in this draft better then dez bryant I’m sure mike mayock of the nfl network would disagree! Dez did not lie to the ncaa he just did not report it I’m sure if he reported it he woulda play more games last season! For all we know he could be the next larry fitzgerald or better he has no carachter issues that I’ve read or even heard about and what other red flags could there be he’s never had drugs or alchol problems! What othere red flags r there on him? Trust me if dez is a 100 pecent on his pro day he will go top 10 easly!

One thing in support of Dez. he is an outstanding returner. The one sure thing is that the bucs have an excellent special teams coach, so Dez could be a double threat.
Not sure what return skills the other rookie receivers would have……..

I wouldn’t object to the Bucs picking Dez. Great player. He made a mistake and he paid for it. Sure he doesn’t sound like an English major, but many football players are not the most swift with the tongue. Not sure why he is considered injury prone. I don’t think he missed any games due to injury in the little over 2 seasons he played. I guess people are referring to the tweaked hamstring and now he is suddenly injury prone. No no no.
Hopefully the Bucs will do all their homework when they consider who to draft. I frankly think that if McCoy is there, they will select him. Then go WR in the 2nd. I like the Cincy WR a lot. Big play guy. Golden Tate is a very good WR as well. Very fast. His 40 time might propel him to the first round and out of the Bucs reach in the 2nd.

That is why he keeps saying “I’m sorry for lying” His red flags are that he hasn’t played football in over a year, he is a liar, and he appears to be about as bright as a 12 year old. You know what happens when stupid liars get a $10 million/year contract? They f*** up.
I respect Mayock and all the other guys, but they are also saying that one year wonder Jason Pierre-Paul is the best DE in the draft and a top 5 pick…so I wouldn’t take their word as law.
