Lane Kiffin’s Move Means Rich Bisaccia Stays?
January 13th, 2010Rumors were rampant recently that Bucs special teams coach Rich Bisaccia was going to go back to college and coach the running backs at the University of Tennessee, reuniting with former Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.
But Joe wonders if that plan was blown to shreds when it was learned Tuesday night that Volunteers coach Lane Kiffin, Monte’s son, took the vacant job at Southern Cal?
Monte Kiffin is expected to move west with his son so there’s no chance of Monte returning to Tampa Bay, but wither Bisaccia? Joe wonders?
What Joe does know is Bisaccia’s strong interest in the opening at South Florida. And it seems Bisaccia is pulling out all stops in his effort to at least get an interview. He even enlisted the services of former Bucs great Derrick Brooks.
Brooks, speaking Tuesday with the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, “The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig, told the WDAE-AM 620 audience that he spoke at length with former USF athletic director and Bucs Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon who still has a great deal of influence at USF.
Brooks admitted the main topic of conversation with Selmon was what a great coach Bisaccia is and that Brooks felt he would be the perfect man to be the Bulls’ second football coach in school history.
Brooks, who is a member of the Florida State University board of regents, told “The Big Dog” that he thinks so highly of Bisaccia that he was working on a plan to have Bisaccia succeed Bobby Bowden as the Seminoles coach before the Bowden clan hatched a plan to coerce Jimbo Fisher into becoming FSU’s “coach-in-waiting” and eventually succeeding Bowden.
If Bisaccia isn’t offered at least an interview with USF, will he instead bolt to USC and join Kiffin?
Joe wonders.

I sure hope we offer Bisaccia more money or something and get him to stay. He is a great special teams coach, but so much more. I think if he leaves it will really set this franchise back. He is the best all around coach we have in Tampa, and that’s not a knock on Rheem. He is just a solid asset and we should do whatever is necessary to keep him.

It is pretty amazing how Bisaccia has gone from being one of the worst special teams coach to one of the best. I wonder how much is it the players and how much is it his coaching. A few years ago I would have personally helped Rich move out of Tampa because of how putrid they were. It has been an interesting journey.

Eric:
Rich Bisaccia has been special team coach for eight years now, and the last five years have been the best special teams in Buccaneers history. I’m not sure where your coming from when you say he was the worst at one point. And of course it’s the coaching and not the players. Special teams units are largely made up of 2nd stringers that come and go every year.

The last 2 or 3 years have been good. Before that they were average at best. I can’t remember how many times at RayJay I was cursing his name after another short kickoff or long return by the other team. I give him credit. He has turned around his career from being on the verge of being fired to being sought after.

U think that we could get USF to hire Raheem? That would fix a lot of stuff…………….
