Gaines Adams Is Dead; Cause Of Death Found
January 17th, 2010Former Bucs first round pick and Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams has died, and the cause of death is a heart attack.
Per USA Today, Adams died at 9 a.m. this morning Greenwood, S.C. Adams was 26.
Greenwood County coroner Jim Coursey told WYFF-TV that Adams was pronounced dead at Self Regional Hospital. He also told the station that Adams appeared to be in good health before his passing.
An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.
Local South Carolina officials do not believe there was any foul play involved.
Adams was the Bucs first round draft choice in 2007 and was picked fourth overall in the draft. Adams was traded near the trade deadline to the Bears this season for a second round pick.
Updated: NFL Network unearthed an interview with Adams from last season where he came off a two-sack performance.
Update II: Per Adam Schefter’s Twitter feed, the BSPN NFL insider claims he is hearing reports that Adams died of a heart attack but he cannot confirm these reports.
Update III: Schefter, per his Twitter feed, reports Adams did die of a heart attack.
Coroner ruled that Bears DE Gaines Adams died of cardiac arrest caused by an enlarged heart.

Profootballtalk.com is reporting it is an apparent heart attack. This is one of those reminders to me that all the bitching and moaning we do about the Bucs, it’s just a silly game. RIP Gaines.

Thoughts and prayers out to Gaines and his family ,,, He may not have been the player we hoped … But he was Decent but carried the highest of expectations which made it tough for him to live up to fans expectations. But he seemed like a Humble Good guy .. and is still part of the Buccaneer Family ,, I hope the Bucs wear a sticker on their helmets next year .. He was still a teammate and atleast tried to live up to his potential.

Gaines was sincere man with family values. His smile could light up all nine planets and replace the sun. Today is a dark day. My prayers go out to his family and children. Rest in Peace brother Gaines Adams.
