Bucs Have Spotlight On Gerald McCoy
January 1st, 2010The Bucs badly need a defensive tackle in the 2010 draft. That much is clear.
Joe was hoping beyond hope the Bucs could somehow land Ndamukong Suh, the defensive tackle/manbeast from Nebraska.
Given the Bucs recent win streak, Suh in a Bucs uniform is unlikely to happen. But the next-best defensive tackle, no slouch himself, is Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy.
It seems the Bucs are infatuated with McCoy. While Oklahoma was playing Stanford in the Sun Bowl, a number of teams sent scouts. But not the Bucs. They sent the big man, reports. Chris Steuber of Scout.com.
When Oklahoma takes on No. 21 Stanford today in the Brut Sun Bowl, there will be a few NFL teams observing the talent on the field. The Baltimore Ravens will send a scout; the San Francisco 49ers are dispatching their Director of Player Personnel Trent Baalke; and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are sending General Manager Mark Dominik. It’s interesting that Dominik is attending the game and not Director of College Scouting Dennis Hickey, National Scout Jim Abrams or another high-level scouting executive; Dominik’s presence signals a strong interest in a particular player, and that player is Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.
Dominik understands the urgency to get a playmaker in the trenches, and it’s no surprise that he’s in El Paso, Texas this afternoon to witness the player he covets first-hand.
What better evidence is there that, sans Suh, McCoy will be called to the podium by the Bucs during this spring’s NFL draft?

Saftey from Tenn ,Berry, would IMO have a greater overall impact than McCoy. If we pick at 4 as things stand now……Berry is my choice

Joe
Is Dominick the best person to scout talent ? Dominick looks more like a BMW salesman not a talent evaluator.

MTM,
Real Good observation ,, Those Freeman, Miller and Stroughter picks sure look like Busts .. And he brought in Donald Penn .. Amateur 8\

I’ll be so sad if we take McCoy. We could trade out to the middle of the 1st round, get a DT just as talented and pick up more draft picks in the process. McCoy is not special.

sit down Joe and take a deep breath……

Hey all you Bucs fans just chill will ya. I invited Mark to spend the weekend with me in El Paso because my latest babe had a friend and made me promise to bring along a “friend”. The whole Sun Bowl was the cover story – trust me I’m good at inventing those.
at the game i asked Mark what he thought about McCoy and he said it didn’t matter because, and I quote, “Bill’s gonna do what he wants to so why bother?”
Tiger out.

At this point (over 4 months before the draft), I think Dom is simply trying to get a look at McCoy with his own eyes. It’s way to early to anoint him our 1st round pick. Much can change between now and April 22. We all know how many head games are played in the months/weeks leading up to the draft.

FlBoy84, I agree. In fact, I bet Dominik has probably seen all the top picks in person.

There are 7 DTs with 1st round/early second round grades. Suh is the only “special” DT that was head and shoulders over the rest. Since we can’t get Suh now, reaching for McCoy would be foolish imo. We could take Haden and have to young shutdown corners, then take a DT with our first pick of the second round.
People keep trying to put Gerald McCoy in the same catagory as Suh, but I just ain’t buying it. Jared Odrick, Dan Williams, Brian Price, Arthur Jones, Marvin Austin, and even Terrence Cody all have just as much potential as McCoy…and half of them will still be there in the second round.

Kong Suh the second comming of Reggie White and Roy Miller could do the same damage as gilbert brown and the late great minister of defence. Great things are on the way 4 the Buccaneers.

eric berry is the better choice

Eric Berry is quite a player. He is only 5″-11″ tall and wish he had another couple inches, but he has mad skills and the Bucs need a Safefy in the worst possible way. Sabby reminds me of Dobie Gillis.

I hate to say this but I can’t envision the first three picks going any other way than Suh, McCoy, Berry……..and where does that leave us?
Don’t be shocked if we end up with Okung or Dez Bryant……..just saying

Dez….would be an excellent choice if those 3 are off the board…..
he has been working out here in B’ton @ IMG

Not seeing what everybody sees in Berry. Undersized, not a great tackler, and hell, he’s a safety, which makes him a player in a low value position.
DT>S any day of the week. If these two are available, it better be McCoy.
