THE PESSIMIST: Enough With McCown Already
January 26th, 2009The beer gut geniuses seem to have it all figured out. Re-sign and start Luke McCown, they say with a straight face.
Yeah, like he’s the answer at quarterback in a divsion with Matt Ryan, Drew Brees and Jake DelHomme. And how the hell do you have a strong opinion on a quarterback when there’s no offensive coordinator in place?
THE PESSIMIST ran into another Luke lover yesterday at Publix (they’re everywhere). He was the typical guy who just can’t think of another quarterback who could possibly start for the Bucs.
The dude gave the same pro-Luke logic. “Son of Bob sucks and Garcia isn’t the answer.”
Nobody seems to care McCown was a fourth-round pick rejected by Cleveland and rejected by Chucky. Sure, McCown showed some flashes in ’07, when he went 1-2 in starts against teams with losing records. But the guy made some bad decisions in those games.
There’s really know reason to think he’s going to jump out of the shadows at 28 years old and lead the Bucs to a winning record. The guy can’t even chop wood.
The real answer for the Bucs is to make a major move to solidify the quarterback position. We’re talking big trade or moving up in the draft, as the free agent pool is pretty bare.
If The Dream and his new offensive guru don’t like any of the options out there, then sign Jeff Garcia and McCown for one more season, let them battle it out, and make another go at a big-name or blue-chip quarterback in 2010.
Would anyone bet the Bucs finish 9-7 or better with McCown under center next year? Didn’t think so.

Matt Cassel is the best thing out there. It will tae alot to get him but I think he is our best bet moving forward. I’m not high on Luke and I think Garcia should call it quits, I wouldnt mind seeing where Josh Johnson Goes but we need someone who can step in right away and make a difference and the only person I think can do the successfully is Cassel.

You’re an absolute FOOL. Let Greise and Garcia battle it out? That’s what got Gruden fired moron.

Dave – You must have misread something.

Griese is under contract as is Johnson. Draft that K-state QB or someone with real promise and worst case scenario you have Griese who may not be the best option but definitely not the worst. You have your stop gap veteran under contract now go for a real QB high in the draft.

McCown is not worth the gamble. He’s no better than simms was before the spleen, and that wasn’t so hot. Morris doesn’t seem dumb enough to turn his team over to McCown. Can’t imagine the Glazer want to see that. Either get a firstrounder or let Garcia protect hte ball another year.

You’re right, i did read it wrong. Sure you didn’t edit that? My bad.
There is NO way Garcia will be back, NO WAY! He is the reason Gruden was fired.

Joe’s editorial staff does not practice secret backroom editing to confuse readers and cover for mistakes. Although we do have a lot of injuries and a shortage of running backs.

Since the Bucs re-signed McCown for starter money I guess they believe Luke’s the future – we’ll see. How about this – go after McNabb. Maybe taking Donavan out of Philly would help him.
What about this possibility – draft Pat White in Round 2. In Pat you’ve got a wildcat possibility plus you upgrade your RB at the same time.
