Schiano: “I’d Like People To Quit Complaining”

Greg Schiano went on a passionate 1 minute and 57 second monologue yesterday on his Buccaneers Radio Network show in response to a fan who told him he thinks the Bucs’ attempt to blow up an opposing team’s victory formation is a “bush league” embarrassment.
Cardinals coach Bruce Arians expressed that he’s no fan of Schiano’s closing-seconds tactics after the Bucs-Cardinals game Sunday, and it’s well documented how Tom Coughlin feels.
Interestingly, Schiano said he wants “everybody to know” that his Buccaneer Men have a choice not to dive low at opponents, among other techniques. His team is on board, Schiano claimed, and people need to “quit complaining.”
“I can say it’s misunderstood. Maybe I’m misunderstood. Who knows? But there’s a couple of things that I can tell you. No. 1, it’s an organized play. It isn’t just a mayhem of diving,” Schiano said.
“Has it worked here yet in the NFL? No. Has it worked before? Sure. It’s worked or I wouldn’t do it. You know, we’ve caused several balls to be put on the ground in the past in doing this. And there’s a technique, a series of techniques that are involved.
“But most importantly, you know, I want everybody to know, our players, I ask our players, ‘if we don’t want to do this, we don’t do it.’ I mean, that’s where I am. I’m not going to force guys. Because is there’s always a risk involved? Sure. I mean there’s always a risk involved when you’re hitting other people. And I’m talking about a risk for our players.
“But, you know, when your players believe it can give you an opportunity, now why do they believe? Because they’ve seen the video. They’ve seen the ball on the ground in a situation that that shouldn’t happen. So I think that they understand if done correctly, there’s a good opportunity. …
“When it’s a one-score opportunity, and especially a field goal opportunity and there’s time left to do it, that’s part of our beliefs. And guys can disagree with it, call it, you know, there’s no Bush league to it. You know it’s coming. And if anybody saw it, Gerald McCoy was shaking his head telling [Arizona], ‘We’re coming.’ So I mean, you know what, run the play. If there’s time on the clock, run the play. I’d like people to quit complaining, and that’s what we’re going to do, and get ready for it.”
Joe gets Schiano’s mindset, but count Joe among the fans who are no fan of the tactic. Schiano’s logic is sound, but it still doesn’t take away the queasy feeling in Joe’s stomach when the tactic is employed.

Hate schiano but I love that play. The game isn’t over. I don’t care if you want to take a knee run your play and we’ll run ours. Just cause the other team can run out the clock doesn’t mean it’s time to give up.

I can’t wait until the “Fire Schiano” crew gets their way, our great players get traded/sold away, and we go through yet another rebuild with another GM and coaching staff. Thats what you people want? More years of obscurity? This team might be 0-4 at the moment, but at least its a competitive team defensively. Anyone here remember 2011? Anyone? If this team goes through yet another coaching and GM change, you can kiss VJax, Goldson and Revis goodbye in 2014. And probably kiss McCoy goodbye in 2015.

I like the play because it sends a message to our defense not to quit….ever…..and that should translate to more intense play prior to the end of the game.
Compare it to Raheem’s defense….one that gave up after the coin toss.

Put a competitive product on the field that adjusts to in-game situations and you won’t need to ask the fans to stop complaining, coach.

At this point, until the wins start, the people who dislike Schiano (and most seem to also be Freeman lovers, imagine that), are going to complain at every single move he makes.
Releasing Ogletree? Until a few days ago, they all wanted it. Now? It’s only to save himself.
While leaking the info on Freeman makes absolutely no logical sense from an organizational standpoint, they are convinced he did it.
Hell hath no fury like a Freeman lover scorned.

I have no issue with the play but here is what Arizona was probably pissed about:
Patrick Peterson could easily have returned that last INT for a TD if he wanted to. But instead he gave himself up. He scored and it would have been 20-10. But he did the smart thing and went down to end the game essentially. If he could go back Im sure he would have ran that in and run up the score.

As for the kneeldown play, if it works, he’s a hero, if it doesn’t, he’s a zero. At least he gets the players input, as its them that has to make the unorthodox play. But I agree with some of the other posters, how about you play to win the game in the first 58 minutes? Play calling toward the end of games when we have the lead has been atrocious.

Well, I’m against the play. I think it is in fact Bush league. If that play works, then the other team is a bunch of morons. That could work in college but will not work in the NFL. With that said, its not the play that bothers me about Schiano. Its the fact that we arent the team in the victory formation. When that happens Coach then you will not be hearing complaints.

Well I guess the next step the NFL will take is they will call it a game if the winning team has the ball the last minute of the game. I don’t understand the problem finishing a game out. If we were down by 2 scores then no need to do it. But 1 score go for it.

The bucs were still in the gay and like when herm edwards scored against the giants many years ago when they fumbled the knee down it can happen, i think its a competive play when the score is within reach, say what you want but the bucs d is playing for the most part lights out, look what the saints did to miami last night….now time for the high priced O to get going which is even more reason why I think that freeman is a self centered jerk and had he doen morre to prepare himself and not been selfish the bucs could be 4-0 or 3-1

Splengo, who cares if another coach has done it or not? No NFL coach ran the read-option or the spread offense before either, but those are working out alright. The NFL is a fraternity of men who do what it takes to win games and make money. Period.

Schiano doesn’t have to worry about retaliation….he never gets the Bucs in victory formation due to his coaching prowess.

I like Schiano but dont like the tactic. Spend less time practicing the blow-up and more time practicing things like getting 3 yards on a 3rd and 3 instead of 2.

The problem is not that Schiano is still going for a win til the clock expires. That’s cool. The problem is it comes after 59 minutes of his team showing zero mental toughness and choking away yet another lead. As long as the team keeps putting itself in these positions it’s only ever going to come off as a desperate act by a coach who is out of ideas.

This entire organization is an embarrassment to the entire Tampa Bay area at this point, and with him trying to defend his Pop Warner tactics, only makes it worse.

I wish the man knew the series of techniques that would lead to a pro football team averaging more than 11pts a game.
A pro football team that has Vincent Jackson, Mike Williams, and Doug Martin.
I also question whether this is up to the players and their choice. Since when? With coach nut case? very very doubtful.

Just to clarify, is Schiano saying if the players don’t dig it he’ll stop calling it? Great news! I assume the players therefore also have the power to veto the more predictable plays from this dusty run-and-shoot playbook he found in the Giant’s dumpster and decided to use? Excellent! Bucs could be the first democratically-coached team. Show of hands on the sideline boys, it’s 2nd and 8… Run or pass?

It is a play…. they are not hiding the fact that they are trying to do it…. I don’t agree with Schiano much… but on this I do.
When you are in field goal range and it could tie or win the game or within 7 points… then get after it.

Oh, you mean the same thing the Mike Glennon mob wanted. Bench our franchise QB and give the start to the guy that was a 3rd round draft pick who is worse that Freeman.
Without question, Freeman gave us our best chance to win THIS YEAR. did he get off to a rough start? absolutely. was he on the field with the lead late in the 4th quarter of the 3 games he played? with the exception of NE, yes, definitely. Should he and the first team have gotten far more reps than they got during the preseason games and practice? WITHOUT A DOUBT.
Thats what we’ve been saying the whole time. Freeman gives us the best chance to win THIS YEAR. We all kept stating, if Glennon has to start this year, it will NOT be for a good reason. Well, surprise, surprise. Glennon is starting and our season is already lost, and its barely October.
The smart thing to do in this situation would’ve been to just ride out the year with Freeman and let Glennon learn the system behind him. even @Joe himself stated time and time again that Free was our best opportunity THIS YEAR. could Glennon be the guy for the next 15 years? i sure hope so. but THIS YEAR, he is NOT.

I don’t have a problem with a coach trying to win games. The never give up attitude is a good thing. The problem is that it’s an unconventional play in the NFL and has a very very low rate of success. I bet the defense cringes when the play is called. It’s one thing if the play works and/or the team is winning games. The criticism is magnified when neither is happening.

I can’t stand Shiano as an outsider looking in, not a fan of the team. I do think this play was bush league. However, I HATE the qb kneel, or “victory formation”. Always feels like no matter what side your own, the fans are getting ripped off of that many minutes of gameplay. Don’t try to say that doesn’t matter, because the only reason these people have jobs is because fans want to see it, if the fans are gone there is no NFL. It’s just entertainment.
