Furnace Still Blazing Under Da’Quan Bowers
August 14th, 2013There’s not much more Joe can add to the Greg Schiano quotes on Da’Quan Bowers (see below) following Bucs practice in New England today, courtesy of the Bucs’ media relations team.
Schiano is demanding production. The heat is on, Mr. Bowers.
(On who will start on the defensive line)
“There are no starting jobs right now. Guys are competing on the defensive front. You’ve got Gerald mcCoy, that’s a guy who is definitely starting. If AC [defensive end Adrian Claybrn] can come back healthy, then he’s definitely starting. After that it’s wide open.”
(On Da’Quan Bowers getting increased playing time)
“Yeah, as soon as we know that he can. He needs to play situational football, he needs to play a bunch of plays in a row, but not at the cost of [production]. So, it’s a double-edged sword that we’re trying to make sure we are on the right edge of.”
(On if Bowers will play in the game against the Patriots)
“Yeah.”
(On how the team is evaluating Bowers)
“Everything is being evaluated. I told you what I wanted and what I expected but I’m not going to make it happen if it isn’t there. It’s got to be there. We’ll see, he’s got an opportunity Friday night and we’ve got another game next week, so we’ll just keep playing it out and see how it goes.”
You can hear Schiano talk about this and more in the WDAE-AM 620 audio below, via the Buccaneers Radio Network.

I hope this approach pays off for Schiano, it’s interesting.
Who does he intend to replace him with?

Dayum…Schinao sounds for real huh?

I don’t know who would play on 1st & 2nd downs in replacement of Bowers but I like Schianos attitude. I respect Bowers but in the NFL if you don’t meet expectations, you’ll meet the door. Schiano obviously believes in him or he wouldn’t be so open about it all. Go Bucs!

BucKing 3..the more I hear from Schiano the more I like him. Dating back to when MY Bucs hired him. This man is the real deal. I have full confidence in him.

Unless Bowers comes on strong in the next couple of weeks, you can bet your last dollar that Dominik will be scouring the waiver wire once all the teams start slimming down. He may get lucky and find someone with raw talent but pass rushers are a hot commodity and are combed through thoroughly.
Most teams will only release their camp bodies, but once in a while it’s a money decision, and they will release a serviceable veteran. But don’t count on us signing one because it is slim pickens for edge rushers, and everyone will be sure to be shopping also. Schiano is just going to have to coach his guys up.

Wow!!

I can understand where Schiano’s coming from. its a delicate balance between having a guy starting whos not ready to put up the numbers a starter should, and having a guy play part time which limits the production hes capable of. its a pickle i tell ya lol.
the only answer I can give is to get him to be a starting caliber player.

Can anyone imagine someone becoming a new Bucs fan in 2009 having Raheem as our coach and then going into Schiano? This is the crap I think about in the down time. If there was ever a perfect description for the term the difference between night and day. This is it.

I forgot to add this. I don’t know quite when, but this mofo is going to take MY Bucs to the SB someday. Bank on it.

As I said, the Bucs should have kept Bennett.

Schiano is pushing and makes sense, he hasn’t deserved the starting position. I wish for the best but then again bowers was a gamble from the beginning we drafted him. I’ll be honest that his performance have been low, he does have a limited season and also an injured season under him so there may be room to improve. I do blame that it was a Raheem era pick and a young Mark Dominik.

I agree with Mike J, Bennett was a good secure player. But he is injured and we don’t know how it will affect him. At the same time it is time to groom our players for the future and I believe Schiano wants to groom his own player and bowers is young enough to be molded. However it’s not looking good for bowers and Bennett could’ve stayed for that cheap salary. But I expect another DE this coming draft if spence or Gholston don’t show any true potential. A starting material DE

theres a reason why Bennett only got a 1 year deal for peanuts. just sayin. time to move on with the players we have.

I like it… Hopefully it pays off for everybody
