Schiano Reacts To Adam Hayward-Bryan Cox Spat

December 16th, 2012

Fans saw the ugly, embarrassing sight of linebacker Adam Hayward restrained on the Bucs sideline after getting into a heated, finger-pointing, pushy, arm-waving spat with Bucs’ front-7 defensive coach Bryan Cox today in New Orleans.

Hayward stayed in the game, but this was not a typical coach-player disagreement. Here’s the video.

Greg Schiano acknowledged the faceoff and closed the incident to media after the game.

“I’m not happy about it, but I do know that it’s been resolved. I think you chalk it up to heat of the moment. Guys are very passionate. Adam is a passionate player. Coach Cox is a passionate coach. I know they’re very close. And they’re, I think, more of a family spat in a frustrating time than, you know, anything that I’m deeply concerned about,” Schiano said. “I know they’ve already smoothed that over. But again, it’s not what a football team that I’m the head coach of I want to see. So certainly it’s been addressed, and it will be addressed and we’ll move forward from it. But it need not happen again.”

Joe gets the passion, but Latrell Spreewell  Hayward is a Bucs leader and a true veteran. You can’t have guys in that role going after coaches under any circumstances. It’s beyond unacceptable.

I don’t trust. I no longer believe. And I doubt any fan will see any accountability for this crap.

What do I tell my kid now? Shove your coach and you’ll go right back in.

  2. Ian's Gay Lisp & Ron's Drinking Problem Says:

Coach handled that perfectly! !!!!! ….and I’m neutral with him…taking the “wait and see” approach

  3. Andrew Says:

    @ Kennedy

it happens all the time in football, and more so than we are able to see. Its like fighting with a family member, which he have all done. I mean your not going to turn your back on that family member right? no, what your going to do is find a way to get it resolved and move on. I agree it looks bad but nothing to get your panties all in a bunch.

  4. lurker Says:

    lol kennedy. really?!?

    professional sports is not peewee.

  5. Macabee Says:

Family spat. But as all of you know, they look bad in public!

  6. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

    @Kennedy

Wait till your kid shoves you. Then what are you going to do, disown her?

  7. canadianbuc Says:

I looked at the video again and Cox was yelling at the Ref about a holding call and I have no clue why Hayward would try to stop him and push him back? Your not the coach so why would you get into coxes business? He’s getting paid to coach your getting played to tackle and play good defense (which you haven’t been doing) so this didnt have to happen but hayward felt that he was above his coach

  8. tommy Says:

    cut him!!! uncalled for!!

  9. Bobs Doghouse Says:

You can argue, yell, scream at your coach but you never ever lay hands on our coach. He should have been benched, and then deactivated for the rest of the season. You can say this is a family issue, but the truth is it is a job that they get paid very well to do. If anyone of us push our bosses we are fired.. Why aren’t they held to the same standards as us..?
@ Miguel when my son lays his hands on me he will find out what tough love is all about just like my father did to me..

  10. Brandon Says:

As the only defensive coach with any fight left in him, Cox should immediately be promoted to defensive coordinator and Bill Sheridan should be fired. Sheridan, and his hiring, are the true embarrasment of the Bucs defense.

  11. Patrick Says:

Monte Kiffin could come in here and fix the defense. Just look at how great it was from ’96 to ’08.

  12. Chris Says:

I agree with Patrick Hire kiffin to fix our defense we need some help and a brand new secondary

  13. MadMax Says:

@Bob, you said it. I understand heat of the moment, and arguing, but damn man, hands off! Thats only escalating things to another level….one that Hayward will not enjoy. Great poise by Mr. Cox though.

  14. BucfanBF Says:

Hayward was out of line and this game was unacceptable. I’m embarrassed for all bucs fans after this loss.

  15. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

Team full of twats unfortunately. And Freeman is most assuredly a black Dilfer.

  16. grasshopp427er Says:

didnt look that bad to me. Cox seemed to be giving the official crap and Hayward tells him to let up and cox shoves Hayward. Then Hayward reacts and shoves him back, but not even hard just a reminder that hey I’m a grown ass man too buddy. Then Cox waves a finger in his face as to sayy I’m the Boss! no hard feelings. Cox has always been a short tempered dude.

  17. RustyRhino Says:

Thanks but no thanks to Kiffen coming back as a coach. How soon we forget how he let our team down when he told them he was going to be leaving to join his son…. And just how well did Kiffen & son do in Tenn, & USC ? I do not think Coach Sheridan will be here next season, but if he is we need some better CB’s out on the field. You can’t win if you give up 350+ passing every game. Sure were stopping the run something Coach Kiffen was not good at accomplishing. Just how many more years do we think Coach Kiffen will want to be on the sidelines? 1 maybe 2 more years. I do not know how old Coach Kiffen is, but father time can and does catch up to us all.

  18. Bucfan 19 Says:

What is Kiffin gonna do coach from his wheel chair?? Monte did a great job during his tenure.. But he is too old to be running around in the NFL now.. Give the team time to gel folks.. Don’t run the coach off in one season.. If we are still having these issues next Dec grumbling should start.. Not in the first season.. Come on people!

  19. gopackgo Says:

you can’t do that, fire Hayward, right or not right, you can’t push a coach like that. Where is this team going allowing this…well we know where it’s going, definitely not in the playoffs…
