Carpenter Gets Practice Squad Offer

Word circulated via social media yesterday that the Bucs had cut down to two quarterbacks, releasing Rudy Carpenter and Jonathan Crompton. The official team cut list will be released this evening.
But it seems the Bucs want Carpenter back — for the practice squad, so Twittered Bucs beat writer Anwar Richardson today.

Joe imagines Carpenter would jump at the Bucs’ practice squad offer while still sniffing around hard for a real job. Any practice squad player essentially is a free agent.
Regardless, Micheal Spurlock is your No. 3 quarterback. Let’s pray he never sees the field.

Free lobbied hard for him so you got to figure he is a good guy. Was anyone else impressed by Crompton? He looked like a NFL QB to me. I hope he gets a chance somewhere.

With no emergency third qb roster exemption, many of these guys like Rudy, Crompton etc are probably a dying breed, sadly.
If you are more than 2 years in and have not proven to be a number one or solid 2, it’s over. The upside of the rule change is, guys like spur lock, Josh cribs and brad smith just became more secure and valuable.
Teams will annually draft or sign an undrafted fa qb to place on the practice squad and groom for two years, activate in case of injury, and then if that qb doesn’t pan out, start over.
The days of the 5-7 year third stringer are ending.

If this is a favor to an otherwise good guy to get him a $5700/wk paycheck while he’s looking for another team, I can understand the offer. Otherwise the PS will only get him more practice which he has had the last 2 years. If the PS is meant to hold up-and-coming players with potential, you would think that would be Crompton, as they did sign a 3 year contract with him. I’m not saying I disagree with the move, just trying to understand the logic. Maybe it’s not a cut at all, just trying to juggle roster spots.

Uhhh Mauha…. last year Detroit kept us out of the playoffs by beating us with their 3rd string QB.

Am I one of the only ones that thinks carpenter is better than crompton? Sure cromton has a better arm but to me his throws were pretty much way off or to the wrong colored jerseys, almost testaverde-esque out there… Just my opinion from the couple times I watched him.

Vinny Threw 275 TDs and passed for over 46,000 yards and was known for being one of the most beautiful accurate passers in NFL history. I like Crompton he could only hope to have that successful NFL career.

Testaverde accurate? Are you kidding me? He threw just over 50% completion rate during his six seasons in Tampa. Beautiful passes, yes. Accurate? Not by a long stretch.

I do love bragging when I’m right, but will readily admit when I’m wrong. I didn’t think there was a chance that Carpenter got cut. With Johnson likely heading for free agency after the season (though I do think the Bucs make a major effort to get him under contract before the season ends), I would think it would be wise to have more than one QB around that knows the system. That being said, having witnessed the last preseason game in person, I can honestly say that Carpenter isn’t likely to be picked up on waivers by any team. And the Bucs will likely offer him whatever salary he would have made if he made the team, to be on the practice squad so he probably isn’t going anywhere.

Yeah, Testaverde was accurate…. He may have the league record for interceptions thrown between the defender’s numbers. Sure, he had a great arm, good speed and size, but never in NFL history has there been a more creative player in giving away games. That much could be counted on for the majority of his career. When the pressure was on, you could count on Testaverde to crumble like a Saltine cracker in a 5-year old’s fist.

…okay…here’s the problem with your logic on the first point…3rd stringers HAVE gotten starts a number of times. Consider this…the offensive line is not playing up to par right now. That might change with the regular season, it might not.
But if it doesn’t, our starting QB could very easily go down. He’s tough, so it would likely take a few good hits, but it is certainly a possibility.
I like Josh Johnson, but he’s more of a scrambler than anything else. As such, he can possibly win some games, but it won’t take long for teams to figureo ut they need to put a spy on him. But he is a higher injury risk because he scrambles so much.
QBs like that also bring a LOT of penalties because the oline is holding to save his life.
So Spurlock could well get the chance to play. Does anyone here have any idea how good of a QB he is? I sure don’t. “Run Michael Run” is the man as far as I’m concerned…at WR and KR…but at QB? Not so sure.
On your second point…about Crompton…
…you failed to grasp his situation. it was the first live game action he had. He improved as he grew more comfortable. He played like a rookie, yes.
When he first came into the last game, the announcers stated that his weak spot was that he didn’t have a strong arm. He proved them wrong several times in the game.
Carpenter is a “nowhere man”. He’s the best he will ever be. Crompton has upside. He improved as he got more playing time. We know where Carpenters ceiling is, we don’t know where Crompton’s ceiling is.
I’m hating this new rule change. college players by the hundreds go without getting signed each year and this will only add to that number. If anything, the NFL should be finding ways to give these guys work. Frankly, I think the Practice Squad should be doubled in size and first year members should not be allowed to be signed by other teams. That creates a farming system for these young players.
Final roster size should be raised too…maybe 60 players. The problem I have with the current sizes is that there is no farming system in place. And the NFL NEEDS one.
