McCown Lands A Brees Comparison At One Buc

June 26th, 2014

josh mccown 0317Don’t think starting quarterback Josh McCown is the pulse and absolute leader of the Buccaneers?

Well, you Mike Glennon Mobsters (and you know who you are) might want to hear these words of a Tampa Bay linebacker.

Plugging his New Jersey life skills and football youth camp recently on WEPN-FM in New York, strongside linebacker Jonathan Casillas was asked about the status of the Tampa Bay quarterback position. Casillas explained that McCown is top dog in the mold of Casillas’ quarterback when he won a Super Bowl with the Saints.

Dave Rothenberg: Have they named a starter, do you believe in one guy over the other yet? Or are you in just kind of a wait-and-see attitude?

Jonathan Casillas: Well, what I can tell you now is Glennon is learning a lot from McCown,” Casillas said. “(Laughing) I’ll let you know that right now.

McCown’s a good quarterback. Not to take anything away from Glennon. Glennon helped us win games last year, and if it wasn’t for him we never probably would have won any games, just to be honest. I think what he did last year, he set himself up for his career, to have a great career. You know, he had the confidence underneath him to throw the ball down the field to our targets, Vincent Jackson and some guys. So he was able to get experience early.

McCown is just, he’s on a another level right now, I believe. Like I said, don’t take anything from Glennon; he’s just only in his second year. But McCown looks like he’s played a couple of years in this game. It’s a strong comparison, but he reminds me of Drew [Brees], not just the way he throws the ball, but his approach to the game. The first one in, last one out. You know, he’s always around. He’s very [communicative], very personable. And you can tell he’s a born leader. You know, he’s not even trying to do much now, but people are following him, just his approach to the game. Like I said, Glennon is learning a lot from him. So, if Glennon can beat him out this year, that would be great. Because at the end of the day, if Glennon can beat McCown out, then we’re going to get a good quarterback.

This is encouraging, feel-good stuff for Bucs fans on all fronts from the straight-talking, typically candid Casillas.

The Bucs need McCown, at 35 years old, to have a career year, which would represent his first full NFL season as a successful starter. Hearing stuff like this from Casillas, a respected veteran, makes Joe that much more optimistic for a McCown miracle.

“So, if Glennon can beat him out this year, that would be great. Because at the end of the day, if Glennon can beat McCown out, then we’re going to get a good quarterback.”

Thank you for making the point JC. This is what the MGM is looking for. Can’t wait for training camp and pre-season to start.

  2. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Ditto realist. Let the guys compete and the coaches will make the call. Simple concept explained by Lovie, somebody has to be listed as starter on the depth chart, but as we all know that’s a fluid situation

  3. SAMCRO Says:

    @The_Buc_Realist

I agree. We need McCown, and when Glennon is ready, we’ll need him, but for right now, this is the best thing for all fans.

….and first of all, I’m a fan of Mike Glennon, (the person), secondly, I’m a fan of Mike Glennon the backup QB for now, until he becomes our future franchise QB.

But most of all this MGMobster, hopes McCown has a terrific season.

This is a total opposite reaction that JOE is expecting from us mobbers. JOE just don’t get it or he just still doesn’t understand. Us MGM’rs are just glad that L & L kept him, and allow him to learn behind a fantastic veteran in McCown. I have no doubt in my mind that Glennon will learn a lot from Josh, and be better for it in the end.

  4. Couch Fan Says:

Im glad McCown is such a great leader. I believe that is why they brought him here. I still think Glennon with McCowns mentorship will still take over by Game 1. May the best man win.

    LONG LIVE THE MGM!!!

  5. John23 Says:

McCown Miracle I can see the city of Tampa name a street after him now.

  6. Eric Says:

If he is playing like Drew only about ten guys in league history could beat him out.

    Glennon isn’t one of them

  7. Harry Says:

    @Eric,
    Exactly

  8. Andrew 1 Says:

“McCown is just, he’s on a another level right now, I believe.”

And yet there are still people who think Glennon will be the starter. smh. That’s just delusional.

btw we dont need a “miracle” from McCown, just above average QB play, which I believe he is capable of doing. You CAN still get to the playoffs with just above average QB play, the Chiefs are proof of that.

  9. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    @ Andrew 1

Perhaps the skepticism about McCown’s “on another level right now” is based on some of us wanting to see how he performs when pads are and against competition going all out to sack the QB. Maybe he does play lights out and holds off Glennon, but to totally dismiss Glennon or put total faith in McCown at this point in time is a questionable call at best. Whoever wins the starting QB spot will get this Buc fan’s support (but I agree with the faction who believe Glennon will start at some point this season).

  10. Hawk Says:

McCown might play like Brees in his underwear, but in regular season games, the history of those two are not that close. Let’s hope that this is the year that McCown can play like Brees when he is wearing his big-boy pants.

  11. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ ToesOnTheLine

Not trying to be a d!ck or anything, but McCown WILL be the starting QB to start the season. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind about it. There are just to many factors that would suggest it. Now, will he still be the starting QB by week 6? I have absolutely no idea, but then again there just to many unknown variables that could happen by week 6 then there are by opening day, injury being the main one. I really think he will be the starting QB for the entire season though.

I think people who doubt McCown only remember the old McCown, like the one who played for the cardinals all those years ago. But if you go back and watch his games last season, its pretty obvious that he is a completely different QB now, definitely a better one.

  12. Yeah It's me! Says:

No Way Glennon beats out McCown PERIOD! Every Buc asked about our QB situation has said McCown is light years ahead of Glennon. Even every OTA, every reporter has said McCown is WAY ahead of Glennon in ALL phases. Glennon will back up McCown for atleast 2 years. I like Glennon but it doesn’t make him better than McCown just because I like him. McCown has forgotten more than Glennon knows. It’s called “experience”. And McCown has TONS more than Glennon, Thank God!

  13. Andrew 1 Says:

He’s definatly no Drew Brees though. But like I said before if he plays above average and our defense is one of the top defenses in the league, then I see no reason why we cant go to the playoffs.

also, there’s a cool video on youtube where McCown kind of tells his story, you should check it out. You can tell he’s been through a lot.

  14. Chef Paul Says:

What are we supposed to hear? That Glennon AND McCown are awesome QB’s? Is the mob supposed to just ignore everything he said about Glennon? No thanks. It’s the delusional haters job to ignore what he said about Glennon. Just like every other good thing we’ve all heard all offseason about Glennon. I’m not taking anything away from McCown. I’m very glad he is here. But even Casillas says Glennon could win the job. Which is exactly what most of the mob has been saying all freaking spring. It’s the troglodyte haters saying he has no chance.

  15. Aaron Says:

I’m trying to remain cautiously optimistic – but I honestly think when this whole thing gets started – we will be hurting at QB.

When we need that play from the QB position in the 4th quarter are we going to get it?

I don’t believe a 35yr old journeyman QB can just turn it on and be that QB. This is not the 2002 Bucs – it’s going to take a few years to get this roster flipped over to where a middle of the road QB can lead us on a Super Bowl run.

I’m very happy that we are getting this organization back on track – but I’m not waking up every morning excited that the Bucs are going to the playoffs.

I’ll be rooting like heck every Sunday,

    Go Bucs!

  16. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Chef Paul

We could also win the superbowl. Theoretically we have a chance. I think you get where I’m coming from.

I look forward to seeing Glennon next season, or sometime after that though.

  17. Hawk Says:

I hate repeating myself, but if Joe(s) can, I guess it isn’t such a bad thing.

    “Hawk Says:
    June 13th, 2014 at 12:31 am

Come on guys. I’m as big a Glennon supporter as anyone, but let’s look at him realistically. He was a rookie, third-round pick, who had a mental-case for a mentor, and Greg ‘NFL QBs don’t need coaching’ Schiano grooming him. Face it, Glennon didn’t get ‘coached’, and HE NEEDS IT. This is the time of year when McCown and the coaches can help the most. They need to see where he’s having trouble, so they can show him how to get better. The NFL throws out far more complicated defenses than ANY college team. You really thought he’d have them all figured out in just 13 games with Freeman and Schiano ‘helping’ him? He’s got the tools. What he needs is the experience and knowledge that McCown and the coaches can give him.”

It is in the best interest of this team (and Glennon also), if McCown is clearly the better choice on opening day. In fact, it would be great if McCown held him at bay throughout the season.
Glennon is getting what *I* believe he deserved… a chance to have a real mentor, a real coach, and real talent supporting him. All three of those things are for him to ‘grow’ into his future. I believe that Glennon will show this coaching staff that they made the right decision by keeping him AND bringing in a competent mentor.
I am a big Glennon fan, and believe what we are seeing is the best for him and, more importantly, the best for the team.

  18. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Hawk

    +10

  19. Chef Paul Says:

    Andrew,

I get where you are coming from. I got all worked up and didn’t phrase it properly.

My point is, if Casillas is saying “if Glennon can beat him out this year,” that suggests there will be competition. And we all know “Competition at QB” is treated like a series of curse words thrown at your mother around here.

  20. Chef Paul Says:

That’s a great post Hawk. Can’t argue with anything you wrote. I missed it the first time around, so I appreciate you repeating yourself.

  21. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Chef Paul

lol at the end there. And yea, I say let them compete, absolutely. This is pro sports, these guys should be competing all the time! Even If they wanted to see who could lace up their shoes the fastest, I say let em.

  22. Chris Says:

McCown compared to Brees? Lol. Glennon approaches the game with excellent preparation too. But comparing him to Brees after what 6 games where he had over a dozen dropped int? I’m not really encouraged that mike glennon is the answer but it wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t beat out McCown or McCown struggles early and glennon relieves him by the bye. Either way I’m not confident either qb is going to get it done for a play off run.

  23. PRBucFan Says:

This is McCown’s team plain and simple.

    “He’s on another level”

Expect Glennon to be “learning from McCown” for a good while.

He won’t be starting unless McCown gets hurt, bet on it.

  24. Kevin Says:

Like I’ve said a million times!!!!! Take Brees, or Rodgers and put them in a piss poor offensive system with bad coaching and no weapons and no freedom at the line and they will SUCK!!!!! Josh McCown is gonna tear it up and it’s because of Tedford. Maybe I will eat my words but my MONEY is on this being a SuperBowl Caliber Team by next season…..MAYBE even this one if they GEL fast enough. Watch!!!

  25. Chris Says:

So a career journey man back up is “on another level” ? I’m confused. Wasn’t 5 bottom tier defenses he played?

  26. PRBucFan Says:

McCown wasn’t brought in to just prepare Glennon, he was brought in to win games.

As long as he does that, he’ll remain the starter.

  27. PRBucFan Says:

Stop living in the past Chris, players grow and evolve as the years go on.

Right now, he’s not a journeymen, he’s the Bucs starter. Deal with it.

And YES, right now he’s on a another level than Glennon.

Unless players and coaches know less than you? Ahahahaha SmH

  28. PRBucFan Says:

I cannot wait till week 1, all these proclamators of Glennon will have to accept his seat behind McCown once and for all lol.

Also once Glennon does get his shot, you do know he won’t have 5 years like our last “QB of the future” to succeed right? He’ll get a shot, but Lovie won’t spend too much time trying him out if he doesn’t show his “franchise” ability quickly.

  29. BoJim Says:

    Hawk. Well said.

  30. Buccfan37 Says:

I think SAMCRO summed it up very well.

  31. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Careful with the absolute predictions PR, remember how the Mob jumped on Joe for the many near absolute predictions the Bucs were unhappy with what they saw on tape with Glennon, looking to trade Glennon before the draft, and were going to draft a QB in this draft. It’s fine to throw it out there, it’s a fun site, but just expect to be fed a lot of crow if Glennon is the starter opening day and McCown is healthy. I don’t know for sure this will happen (even if I could see it play out like that), but it is a real possibility after we see both QB’s in camp and preseason

  32. Chris Says:

Listen pr, I am by no means part of what joe likes to cal the mike glennon mob. I’m just saying is I actually watched McCown last year and went back to the all 22 rewind that we fans can see. He still has decision making issues that carried him throughout his “journeyman back up” career. The amount of dropped ints is pretty worrisome bc he got away with some bad throws too often than the stats indicate of throwing 1 pick.

Glennon can win the job bc I don’t think McCown is on this “other level”. But I’m not confident we have a strong hold at the qb position. Our future franchise qb starter isn’t on this roster. And I’m hesitant to say McCown will make us playoff contenders.

  33. Couch Fan Says:

McCown hs never “won games” in his career. He had a few good games last year but over the course of 10 years that means nothing. No way Lovie put his job on the line and brought a career back up to Tampa to win games. He was brought in to mentor the future. If that wasn’t Glennon, they would of drafted there guy.

  34. Pierce Says:

Question comes for Joe if/possibly when Glennon falters- will you deep down inside feel happy to say, ‘I told you so?’ I think you will if it happens. You probably won’t admit it, but you’ll be thinking it. And that’s not cool cause we’re all supposed to root for the same team. I just hope the best quarterback steps in and wins games – regardless of who it is, I’m giving them all a chance.

  35. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    I think they both suck.

But unless McCown is injured, Mike Glennon has ZERO chance of being the opening day starter. Anyone, that’s right…anyone…that thinks otherwise is an idiot and will likely throw a hissy fit later or disappear.

As much as the mgm claims Glennon will be good, all they have is projected hopes and dreams. He’s done nothing to earn ANY praise at all.

And, if Glennon did beat out McCown (impossible) it would not mean we have a good quarterback.

It could well mean we have the best of two bad quarterbacks.

So, sorry. UNTIL either one earns praise, stop giving it.

  36. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Couch

Because Lovie is so skilled at spotting great QBs in the draft?

    Sorry, not buying it.

And even if Glennon really is THOUGHT to be the future (which I think is bull), it doesn’t mean he actually is.

Honestly, after Lovie did not draft a QB, did anyone really believe Lovie would come out and say “we got McCown for now, we’ll get a franchise guy next year”?

No. He wanted McCown from the start. He put all his chips in that basket. He DEMOTED Glennon…he had to tell him something to placate him.

  37. Surf Buc Says:

Here on the West coast we watch a lot of Raider games. For some reason, Bears games too(and Packers & Steelers). Which means everyone around here knows McCown blows. Boo’d off the field at the black hole…AS A RAIDER. put the kool-aid down. A Brees /McCown comparison is football fodder, kool-aid, and I ain’t drinking it. Hopefully I am proved wrong wrong wrong and he dose something special.

FTR I’m not on the MGM.

  38. Couch Fan Says:

As much as the mgm claims Glennon will be good, all they have is projected hopes and dreams. He’s done nothing to earn ANY praise at all.

    ————————————————————
Wrong. That shows how much you hate the guy. I’m not even going to waste my time telling you why your wrong. So just sit there in your wrongness and be wrong. Glennon will be the future and if he’s not, then we’ll be drafting his replacement sooner than later. But to say he’s done nothing to earn praise is just silly.

  39. PRBucFan Says:

“Careful with the absolute predictions PR.”

I call it how I see it, besides I’ve seen it with my crystal ball 😉

And if I’m wrong, which I won’t be, I can eat my big fat plate of crow broski. And I’ll enjoy the hell out of it.

But believe me just like I’m still doing to the Freemanites to this day, I have lots of fun serving out big fat plates of crow too 🙂

And @Couch you better bet your ass he brought him in to start, and yes to win games. The past is just that, Lovie believes McCown is ready to win “now” in the present. Bro lol I can’t wait for week 1, we are going to be having some fun convo’s! Like the good ole days, except this time instead of teaming up with me and ragging on the Freemanites you’ll be on the opposite side.. Which I hate cause your one of the cool cats on here, but hey we are all wrong sometimes. Ahahaha 😛

  40. PRBucFan Says:

“UNTIL either one earns praise, stop giving it”

Lovie, Licht, and Tampa Bay players… tsk tsk tsk Don’t give McCown praise!

    How dare you! 😀

I’ve already told you on numerous occasions Bonzai, this new “all is dark and gloomy” Bonzai is not befitting of you lol. 😉

  41. Skyline Crew Says:

    Great info on both QBs.

  42. Buc the Haters Says:

McCown will lead us to the promised land. He’ll be our starter for the next 2-3 years and we’ll be comparing him to Rich Gannon, Jeff Garcia, Brad Johnson, etc…

  43. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Couch Fan

    Excuses.

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Buc the Haters

I really do not get the comparisons. Each of those guys at least had a little success before coming to Tampa.

McCown has had none, not even last year.

He had only 3 good starts last year. Not 5. THREE.

Losses do not count. Same goes with Glennon…who actually did win 2 more games than McCown.

  45. Joseph Falzone Says:

Josh McCown is and will be the starter. If you listen to Lovie , Licht and Tedford this whole team is about speed.Josh is much faster then Mike. He go’s through his reads faster, he release’s the ball faster, he can run outside the pocket to avoid a sack better and faster, So with that being said Josh is the leader and Q.B. of this team.In fact I think by next season Mike Glennon will only be a back up for the BUCS. That’s even if he is still here next year. Lovie and company should be looking for another Q.B. ( A dual threat Q.B. ). just look at the Q.B.’s Tedford has worked with in the past. The BUCCANEERS are ALL about speed in space .And not just on defense but offense to.

  46. BuccoBruce01 Says:

Wow. You people are really drinking the Kool-Aid, aren’t you. Casillas has to say that. All is rosy right now. No games played. You do realize you are talking about a journeyman QB here, who managed to have 4 good games in a row? For his CAREER. You don’t think the other 8 teams he’s played for could have figured out he had future potential? He doesn’t. Lovie got caught in the flavor of the moment, of blind hope. Kolb, Flynn, Cassel….all flavor of the moment, coming off short great runs. You see how they worked out. McCown can’t even be thrown into that mix. He had chance after chance to make it stick, and couldn’t. 35 year old QBs don’t just have an epiphany, and become great. That’s about the time the great one’s are winding down. He is a journeyman-backup. Nothing more. Lovie had no choice. He wasn’t convinced Glennon was the answer (which I think he is, and compared to McCown, he’s Johnny Unitas), and if Glennon wasn’t ready, what was he going to do? Ruin a rookie draft choice by throwing him to the wolves? Josh is no better than Luke….just good enough to get you beat. We won’t start competing for W’s against the big boys in our division, until Glennon is named starter (prob by week 4), or Lovie goes with Dungy’s offensive philosophy, of 3 yds and a cloud of dust, and that would be a waste of a lot of big play talent and money. Do you think if Phillip Rivers was a free agent, we’d be having this awesome article, about the newest future great QB for the Bucs? No. 35 yr old Journeyman, playing for his NINTH team. Jes…..Buc fans are the biggest gluttons for punishment. Let’s hope Glennon sticks and is the real deal, or the Josh Freeloader fiasco is going to set this franchise back, 5 more years. Thanks Morris.

  47. owlykat Says:

We already know how Josh will do in pads–he was the best QB under pressure in the NFL last year. He is a true athlete with great knowledge from all his experience, and a leader on and off the field. He is perfect for Tedder’s Offense! We also know how Glennon will do in pads–he was the worst QB in the NFL against the blitz. He is not an athlete. He has no ability to escape the blitz. He has a below average arm. Josh and Tedford can improve Glennon’s knowledge and his bad footwork but they can’t make him an athlete. L and L made the decision to get tall receivers in this draft like Josh had last year, so he can succeed, so they then can trade up next year and get an athletic Franchise QB of the future. Glennon is the backup QB of the future for the team that trades for him. Get over it MGM!

  48. NY Buc Says:

    ^^^

while you’re looking into your crystal ball showing the future would you mind telling me the winning lottery numbers too? 🙂

  49. Hawk Says:

There you have it, MGMers. Owlykat , in his infantile wisdom, has laid the facts out for even the blind to see. Don’t think for a minute that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about! Remember, he’s the same guy who “guaranteed” that Brett Smith would replace Glennon, because Smith was better than Glennon could ever hope to be. Without going back, and researching, I seem to remember him also saying that Tanney/Kafka would unseat Glennon. Of course that was just before Lovie proclaimed Glennon the “QB of the Future”. But what does Lovie know? Yep! Glennon better be watching his back. :^)
