New Bucs general manager?
Joe was beginning to feel angst over the clock continuing to click and no one filling the seat of former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik. Well, it appears that wait is over.
Per uber NFL insider Jay Glazer (if he has ever been wrong about something, please let Joe know) of Fox Sports, the Bucs have decided to hire Jason Licht as their next general manager.
@JayGlazer: The Bucs have tabbed Jason Licht as their new General Manager. The two sides are still working out the contract. … Btw, the Bucs job Licht has been tabbed for is a “real” GM job as he has control of the draft & other personnel decisions.
That’s not an untoward request for power from any general manager. He should have control of the draft and personnel matters, with the coach having the final say with the 53-man roster.
Licht comes from the Arizona Cardinals where he served as a vice president of player personnel. He also was a right hand to Bill Belicheat for years. Not to alarm Bucs fans or anything, but the Cardinals are still searching for a quarterback to replace Kurt Warner.

Funny how EVERYBODY assumed Lovie had total control because he was hired first even though he said he didn’t. Bucs just wanted to get Lovie before someone else did and since they fired Dom we would probably not have Lovie as HC if we hired a GM first.

Nice looking résumé, previous work with Pats, Eagles, Cards. Those are some good organizations and they went to Super Bowls while he was there, so he knows what it looks like. Reid and Bellichick two of the best.
And he walked on at Nebraska at linebacker. Shows a bit of persistence.
Looks like a highly qualified professional. Breath of fresh air from his predecessor.
Naturally our local media hacked up the control and Lovie issue, as usual. What a sad group.

BTW, whichever GM drafts Joe’s JFF will be out of a job within 3 years of doing so. No doubt about it.

Has he been in charge of working the cap at his previous posts? When does the new year start and can the Bucs still pay bonus money for the 2013 season to free up cap space for the 2014 season?

This is a good hire from what I read from the powers that be. I have no idea who any of these guys are so I’ll just go with the flow here. I like the way the Cards have been shaping up. Its true they really never found that QB but that’s where Tedford comes in. We have great balance with the staff and I hope that it shakes out.

Yea Joe, still searching for a QB, but 1) He was not the GM. 2) look at some of the beasts that have come up in AZ (Tyran Mathieau, Pat Peterson, Calais Campbell, Daryl Washington) Love this hire!

Joe Dunn…does it really matter if you’ve heard of his name or not? I’m as skeptical as I can be these days, but I’m not going dwell on the fact that I have not heard of this guy before. Hell how many other guys that were up for a GM spot and I actually know there names or have heard of them before? The answer is zero? Who the hell knows that many front office type names?
Bottom line : everything right now is a wait and see.

I’m glad the Glazers made this decision and didn’t necessarily let Lovie have his pick. Checks and balances are a good thing when it comes to authority. Doesn’t do anybody any good to let Lovie get too comfortable. Gotta have accountability and a GM who has an independent thought process. I like it.

just glad we didnt hire atlanta’s guy because beyond the big trade they made for julio jones and that for tony gonzalez their offense used to be high powered but they arent all that talented from top to bottom, it’s just saints traded for drew brees and hmmm somehow panthers and falcons sucked bad enough to draft quarterbacks at the top of the draft…..we have a chance to get back in the thick of the playoff race…saints receiver core is getting old, panthers cant address their awful secondary and their receiving core unless they get extremely lucky being that their salary cap is just as bad as the saints and atlanta well they just lost gonzalez and outside of matt ryan, julio jones theres nothing there that should scare anyone….if the bucs are smart this offseason the last two years would just seem like a bad dream…GO BUCS

@Joe Dunn – how is it that you’re not working for the Bucs? Considering you know everyone who’s anyone worth knowing as far as coaches and front office types go it seems like you’d be an invaluable resource for them. maybe the glazers should just bring you on as a consultant so they can call you up with a list of names and the ones you haven’t heard of they can just take off the list immediately

I cannot endorse until after the draft and free-agency. I need some kind of track record and actions to see what they really think of the roster. I will not jump around and all excited when someone new that we don’t know tell us for the first time that the plan is ” Winning Football! ”

C. Yes I did hear of Tony Dungy before he was hired. I saw his first few pressers and thought to myself. Here we go again, another moron. Things were very bleak back then, much worse than they are now. I don’t think anyone expected all that much from Dungy. So it’s a ya never know for me.

Then it got better…… My point is that just because the local Buc fans are not aware of a coaching or GM candidate does not mean they will not turn out to be very effective.
I am still amazed (seriously) how critical fans are of every move the team makes. As if they are T H A T smart ???? I doubt it.
I have listened (and called in) a ton over the years to sports talk radio, and if a person does not have the nerve to call in (I do) but will sit at home and type, just how credible are they?

Prior to working with the Cardinals in 2008, Licht spent five years (2003-07) with the Philadelphia Eagles, including the final two years as Vice President of Player Personnel. During Licht’s career, he has worked with four Super Bowl teams (New England—XLVI, XXXVI, Arizona—XLIII, and Philadelphia—XXXIX)

Joe, I’m curious if there are NFL rules regarding what assets a front office person can take with them when they move from one team to another? Working on the periphery of the legal world, my experience has been that the data collected, and in this case the player profiles from scouting and video analysis reports, etc., would be the property of the former employee and legal action could be taken if removed or copied. If similar rules apply in the NFL, then how does the new GM bring his experience and “knowledge” with him, taking the legal risk and copying it all before he goes, or just walk away with only what is in his head?
