Dirk Koetter Calls Out Tiki Barber

September 23rd, 2018

It’s not often you can get inside the mind of Dirk Koetter, but Joe’s going to take you there now.

Koetter enjoys the psychological aspect of coaching. Sometimes his motivational angles work; sometimes they don’t.

It’s clear to Joe that behind the scenes at One Buc Palace, Koetter is using anti-Bucs sentiment in the media as fuel — for himself and for others.

Against the Eagles last week, former Giants great Tiki Barber was the sideline reporter for FOX. On weekdays, he co-hosts a show on CBS Sports Radio, a New York-based program that probably has no more than 99 daily listeners in the Tampa Bay area.

But somehow, Koetter knew Barber had predicted an 0-3 start for the Bucs on his show earlier this year. Barber told the fun story on the “Tiki And Tierney” show this week.

“First thing I see when I walk into the room with Dirk Koetter, the [FOX pregame] production meeting, he throws out a thing that has circled in red, ‘Buccaneers will start the season 0-3,” Barber said of Koetter.

“To make it worse after the game, I’m talking to D-Jax, DeSean Jackson, who had a big touchdown to start the game and he thought I was Ronde. So he’s like, ‘Oh, your brother’s talking *^#@ about us.’ And the PR girl for the Bucs was like, ‘No, no, that’s Tiki.’

So not only is Koetter mining for shots at the Bucs — or having his staff do it — he’s throwing it back in the face of media. Fun stuff!

Barber went on to say Koetter was having fun with the whole situation and Barber said Koetter “feels like a different coach” and the culture change in Tampa is deep and is about far more than the QB change to Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Quoting Koetter, Barber said the head coach told him ditching playcalling was “freeing” and Barber gave Koetter a ton of credit for having the footballs to give it up to Todd Monken.

Joe will close with Barber’s public apology to Koetter on Twitter last Sunday.

    OMG

I hope the bucs have IGNORED ALL of the news about how great they are this whole week

STAY HUMBLE BUCS!!!!!!!!…………………that’s why you’re 2-0…cause you keep on fighting against the naysayers!!!!!

  3. Wright Says:

Tiki taking it in stride ahaha, but good on him and especially Koetter!

Finding ways to motivate this team to excel and keeping this team focused. Still a lot of the season is left, but Koetter is taking the haters (including some Bucs fans and nearly the entire National Media) to the woodshed right now.

    Get em’.

  4. AlteredEgo Says:

LOL…Tiki was standing on the HOT stadium floor all game having to wear “hat cam”…while his brother was in the booth doing the game…love it !

  5. BucNut33 Says:

I LOVE Coach Koetter playing into this as motivation and challenging the players to do the same.

    Talent + Passion + Discipline = Unstoppable

  6. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Giving up play-calling was the best thing Koetter had done for himself in his entire career. Dirk Koetter is clearly a players coach, and now that he’s not bogged down with an excessive amount of responsibility, he has the opportunity to coach not just the Offense and QB, but the entire team.

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

0-2-1 has a nice ring to it for the Reelers to start the season. They ain’t all that anyway.

  8. AlteredEgo Says:

    Earl Thomas…..for…Cameron Brate….?

  9. DoSomething Says:

These guys are taking too much stock in what other people are saying

  10. Walter Says:

    @DoSomething

Sapp, Brooks, and the rest of the boys on defense in the glory years used to do the same thing to motivate themselves.

  14. Darin Says:

He wasnt alone Dirk. And if you hadnt learned from your mistakes and let the other coaches do what they do best theyd be right. Great job Dirk. Gota give credit when it’s due. Funny he said that thinking he was Ronde.

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

Everybody Loves a WINNER. Only way Tampa Bay gets NFlLrespect is to keep winning. Win Monday night and turn..quite a few heads. Even that ESPN crew who expects us to lose. By any means necessary Bucs…WIN.

  16. Patrick Says:

Steelers are now listening to trade offers for Leveon Bell. And we need a running game.

  17. Dooshlarue Says:

I’m watching the Falcons vs Saints and Fins vs Raiders and man….. I gotta say.. football games just aren’t exciting to watch unless Fitzpatrick and the boys are playing

    Can’t wait for tomorrow night.

    Go Bucs!!!!!!

I saw Tiki holding a sign for a sports bar on the side of the street in the upper east side a few days ago. Dude must be pretty hard up for a buck.

  20. Lucious Selmon Says:

    “upper east side”

    Wesley Chapel? LMAO

Alright. I’ve never been to NYC.

I was guessing by Tampa geography. LOL

  24. Bob in Valrico Says:

Don’t know what Tiki ways now but there used to be a in their weights. That
said , it would be even funnier if Koetter actually recognized Tiki.

  25. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

What’s wrong with feeling themselves? They’ve been forced to be humble for all these years now it’s time to carry themselves with some confidence and swagger. Prove to the world they are for real, but just don’t get cocky!

  26. Iamabuc Says:

I don’t know why all the fuzz. It’s not like we haven’t started 2-0 before…🤣🤣🤣…(a little bit of sarcasm with a tiny bit of scare)…it’s just that we’ve been here before and you all know how that turned out. But, OK…let’s be positive here. This is “practically a new team ” , and they are playing great futball…that should continue….this time…..(fingers crossed)

  27. Getaclue Says:

The hell with getting bell. We can’t afford him,Attitude, drug suspensions , miles of wear. We should be calling the Chargers about Austin Ekeler. That kid is dynamic and explosive in both the run and the pass game. His cap number is practically nothing. He is stuck behind a first round draft pick work horse. Look at his numbers per a touch and watch the film. Young fresh legs, hungry player not selfish. What ROJO is suppose to be but better
