Cook Gone; Barnett To The Bucs
April 19th, 2017Only a few mock drafts are must-reads for Joe.
It’s got to be a mock from a guy Joe respects, someone who does the homework and has no history of pure nonsense.
Joe doesn’t bow to mock drafts and cares little about them, but they can be sound info/entertainment as the minutes count down to draft day — if they make sense.
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com is one of the approved mockers at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters. Zierlein is the guy assigned to putting in the film work and type up complete breakdowns for every guy at the NFL Scouting Combine — long before they arrive there. And Zierlen breaks downs dozens if not hundreds more prospects at NFL.com.
Zierlein has gotten more face time lately on NFL Network and the last couple of years he’s pumped out mock drafts.
In his latest, he has the Ravens taking stud wide receiver Mike Williams of Clemson at No. 16, the Redskins gobbling up Dalvin Cook at No. 17, the Titans pouncing on speedster receiver John Ross at No. 18, and then the Bucs going defense with DE Derek Barnett out of Tennessee, “One of the most consistently productive defenders in this draft helps fill a need for the Bucs.”
You can see the whole mock here. Zierlein believes the Bucs pass on versatile running back Christian McCaffery and he goes next at No. 20 to the Broncos.
Joe could live with this scenario and see it happening.
The Redskins have major pass-catching talent in Jamison Crowder and Jordan Reed, even with the loss of Pierre Garçon and DeSean Jackson. But they’re desperate for a running back like Cook to team with emerging Robert Kelley.
General manager Jason Licht did burn one of his official pre-draft visits in Tampa on Barnett.
Just 20 years old, Barnett was a stud from the minute he walked into the SEC as a freshman. His 32 sacks over three seasons, including leading the conference in sacks (13) and tackles for loss is damn impressive.
What’s even more impressive is this detailed breakdown of his game by former Bucs DE Steve White (1996-2001), who also has coached college D-linemen and was a recent Bucs coaching intern under Lovie Smith. White believes Barnett can be a complete DE, a double-digit sack guy, and is Barnett is better in multiple areas than soon-to-be No. 1 overall pick DE Myles Garrett out of Texas A&M.
Of course, this is just mock draft talk. The only real sure thing for the Bucs is that Jason Licht will have a buffet of good football players in front of him a week from Thursday. Pick the right one, and the Bucs instantly become a much better football team.
April 19th, 2017 at 8:23 am
Good!
Best pre draft news ever!
April 19th, 2017 at 8:27 am
Would instantly gain respect for the human bobblehead if this is the selection at 19.
I would be fully on his bandwagon if he followed it up with Mixon.
April 19th, 2017 at 8:38 am
YES… Barnett in the first would be like heaven, instead of having gun toting on campus animal abusing Cook. Ray Jay is next to a campus and Al Lopez park. Wouldn’t we have to beef up a Police presence in that area alone. Why, he could be kicked out of practice like ASJ and go postal LITERALLY across the street…
Ok I feel better now
April 19th, 2017 at 8:43 am
I would fine with this scenario.
April 19th, 2017 at 8:43 am
Cook or Barnett. Either would be an upgrade.
April 19th, 2017 at 8:45 am
This is a licht to mike smith promiseary pick….to stay in tampa
No one knows better the weakness/hole in the defense than Mike smith
Best run stopping edge rusher will be our pick in the 1st round
“My defense wont work and ill look bad if i cant contain the run on the edge”
Mike Smith
April 19th, 2017 at 8:47 am
Speaking for Pablo
“Pablo is convinced that Pablo’s Bucs should draft a TE now that breaking Aaron Hernandez out of jail is not an option. Pablo is very depressed….Hispanics that kill and Hispanics that can’t kick….Pablo is so depressed Pablo may look for someone to impregnate.”
April 19th, 2017 at 8:51 am
This makes much more sense. Let cook be an average back in washington
April 19th, 2017 at 8:51 am
It’ll be an easy pick if Barnett is there at 19. This years mocks have been crazy. So many good players and a lot of the mocks come down to guessing which position is valued more by the teams. This years QB’s don’t add much clarity to the situation either.
April 19th, 2017 at 8:51 am
Saw this last night and seems a very plausible situation and would bring some attitude to the defense in a very quick way, I do not see cook lasting to the 19th pick and the weird thing I saw was mike williams in this mock lasting so long but no way does williams make it near the bucs or past the titans, this would be a good grab for the bucs
April 19th, 2017 at 8:56 am
Seeing I want heavy O in this draft, I’d be happy with Barnett at 19. He’s just about the only D guy I would want at that point in the draft. Zierlein might be pretty close to his mock too after reading some of it.
Cook being picked 2 spots before the Bucs might put NOS on suicide watch though. Better to have him go top 10 for his sake.
I’m fine with Barnett.
April 19th, 2017 at 9:00 am
87- haven’t seen him around all morning and the Cook news has not been real encouraging. HosBlos might be on suicide watch already!
April 19th, 2017 at 9:01 am
Oh damn I forgot about the big homie NOS BOS. Nothing personal with ya boy just giving Joe a hard time about his wordplay, so please don’t bash me homie lol
April 19th, 2017 at 9:03 am
As I have been crying about making the DL dominate, I would LOVE Barnett.
April 19th, 2017 at 9:08 am
Anyone slamming Cook has to be a Gaterd fan. Barnett is a great pick if Cook is gone already. I agree with one of the other guys about drafting Barnett and then Mixon in the 2nd but we know a lot of you guys want alter boys for football players and will cry about it. If Mixon did that last season I would say hell no but it’s been 3 years and he’s very young, if only the rest of you were held to the same as he. Give the kid a break already. Go Bucs
April 19th, 2017 at 9:08 am
This is who I wanted all along. It would be my dream scenario.
April 19th, 2017 at 9:16 am
@Matt so you have to be a Gators fan to have questions about a kid who’s had multiple shoulder surgeries, off field concerns, fumbling issues, and atrocious athletic testing??
I’ll tell you the same thing I told NOS, even if Cook were a gator I wouldn’t want him in the first round. One red flag can be overlooked but you should pay serious attention to four of them
April 19th, 2017 at 9:17 am
SB….he said Gaterd fan not Gators fan. lol
April 19th, 2017 at 9:22 am
Is he the the next Terrell Suggs? His production is insane, against top competition, he would look great in a bucs uni opposite Spence. Measuring tape lies, game tape doesnt, like Cook wouldn’t be surprised if he’s off the board by 19.
April 19th, 2017 at 9:24 am
I’d be very happy with that selection!
April 19th, 2017 at 9:30 am
I hope the Bucs take the best player available… someone who works… wants it… and has production.
April 19th, 2017 at 9:37 am
@matt
Look here homie, I DON’T have hate for any man. I don’t watch college at all. I could care less about ANY school. Just want Joe to keep it 100
April 19th, 2017 at 9:55 am
He’s so good at mock drafts that NFL.com deletes his mocks from last year so we can’t check his credibility. Barnett is my favorite defender that we’ve shown interest in. I don’t think he’ll be available. In fact, I think he will be a top 10 pick. McCaffrey could be too…but if he’s available at 13, get Steve Keim on the MFing phone.
April 19th, 2017 at 9:56 am
Is that you Dave.. You can’t really think at this point these threads would sway my opinion from the belief that DC is already basically a Buccaneer. Go back an listen to the presser Dave the media want asking mixon or barnett they were however asking about that FSU kid. You know the guy most of Tampa Hillsborough is anticipating becoming the first selection. You know the one Dave.
April 19th, 2017 at 9:58 am
I have no idea who this kid is but my gut tells me that picking someone from Tenn is even worse than drafting a gator. But what do I know? Looking at you QB coach B. You suck. Hire Kurt Warner.
April 19th, 2017 at 9:59 am
Btw barnett smallish and slow. If we are going defense early we would be best served to find #93’s replacement. Mockers will be mocking the Bucs DE seemingly for the next 10 drafts. Don’t recall many sacks leaders winning superbowl over the last 10 seasons. And Dave You know full well Hard Knocks eliminates mixon.
April 19th, 2017 at 10:01 am
Barnett
Godwin
Mack
Would be great draft
April 19th, 2017 at 10:01 am
Daaavvee,come out and plllaaayy..
April 19th, 2017 at 10:02 am
Regardless of what happens next week Dalvin Cook is going to need to have his hairy berries surgically removed from NosBos air hole. They couldn’t save Uncle Lovie’s after he was unceremoniously ditched.
April 19th, 2017 at 10:08 am
Finally a 1st rd analysis on this site that actually makes sense, and addresses a position that CANNOT be addressed the next day in Free Agency.
April 19th, 2017 at 10:14 am
ata boy Dave😊..
April 19th, 2017 at 10:21 am
If I were GM:
1. Derek Barnett DE
2. Joe Nixon RB
3. Zay Jones WR
4. Adam Shaheen TE
5. Eddie Jackson S
6. Stevie Tu’iklolavatu DT
7. Jermaine Eleumunor OR
Speed and Beef……
April 19th, 2017 at 10:23 am
HosBlos- looks like you and softy McCoy can share war stories over the occupational hazard of bum knees!
I’m sure that’s a tough hustle but from the sound of your passion it’s a true labor of love.
April 19th, 2017 at 11:07 am
Drafting Barnett would allow them to play around with Spence a little more and move him around for favorable matchups. You can never have enough pass rushers.
April 19th, 2017 at 11:12 am
Nos
The only guy imo that can replace GMC in this draft is Soloman Thomas and we have no chance. Now we could have drafted Donald or Rankins but nooooo.
April 19th, 2017 at 11:15 am
Rubbish, Will Gholston is not someone the Bucs NEED to replace with a 1st round DE. If Barnett is the best available player on the Buc’s board, fine, draft him – but DE is not a need in any way. That’s just delusional.
April 19th, 2017 at 11:17 am
First, Will Gholston is, at best, an OK pass rusher. He’s good at stopping the run. Second, the Bucs don’t share your view of defensive end. They know they need an edge rusher, still. The numbers are glaring.
April 19th, 2017 at 11:20 am
Barnett would be a DREAMBOAT if we picked him up at 19. I’ve been drooling over this guy since I started looking at possible draft picks.
April 19th, 2017 at 11:26 am
I agree. I would be excited to take him at 19 (if he falls). The dude was sick for his combine and still came out and wanted to show people. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6wZJKVaVyY
April 19th, 2017 at 11:37 am
Also keep in mind that Jay Hayes could develop the needed move(s) for this kid…along with the other vets on the line.
April 19th, 2017 at 11:44 am
If Howard, Cook or Davis is on the board at 19 – its an easy decision.
Assuming those 3 are gone – If Barnett is on the board at 19 – that would be a pretty easy decision as well unless we get a good trade down offer which would be my highest preference.
April 19th, 2017 at 11:50 am
For all you ****s wanting us to draft Mixon please read the below per rotoworld:
Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon allegedly punched a female while in high school.
The allegation comes from Anthony Hernandez, who says for a “fact” that Mixon hit his daughter when the two were in high school. “He threw my daughter to the ground and hit her,” Hernandez said. “I went to the school and they hid him in the office. He got no punishment. The police even came. I was escorted off the campus as if I did something wrong. These are simply the facts, he’s a woman beater.” Longtime personnel man Gil Brandt said this incident is of concern among NFL teams, in addition to the video of Mixon laying out a girl with a punch at Oklahoma. Mixon could be drafted anywhere from Day 2 to being an UDFA.
April 19th, 2017 at 12:25 pm
he’s a woman beater.”
—————
GMC better watch out then. Ha!
April 19th, 2017 at 12:25 pm
lol
April 19th, 2017 at 12:26 pm
Again:
1) DE Barnett
2) RB Joe Mixon
3) SS OBI and/or WR Chris Godwin
4) BPA – OL
April 19th, 2017 at 12:28 pm
Oooops…!!!
I forgot: Joe Mixon = Madden 19 Cover
April 19th, 2017 at 12:30 pm
would love to see D Barnett there for the Bucs, they would pull the trigger so fast on that pick. Sad reality is that he won’t be there for us.
April 19th, 2017 at 12:40 pm
Interesting to me that DallasBuc is all over Mixon. This is the type of pick he will bitch over if we burn a 2nd rounder on this dbag and he gets arrested for punching a swashbuckler. In light of the high school incident, can we just move on. There are plenty of talented backs in this draft.
April 19th, 2017 at 1:03 pm
Ndog…that statement was retracted. Check pft, its there.
April 19th, 2017 at 1:30 pm
Mo_Downs:
Very likely that none of those players are there at those spots. Barnett will probably be gone. Mixon could be gone by our second…Obi has no chance of making it to the 3rd round and Godwin probably won’t either. Wishful thinking though.
April 19th, 2017 at 1:57 pm
Steve where there is smoke there is fire once one act had been proven and I would say with him his act was proven.
April 19th, 2017 at 3:11 pm
Kind of a strange mock if you take the other JOE report saying David NJoku will be off the board when we pick … yet this mock says Njoku gets drafted #30 …
I also think Barnett could be taken 8th by the Panthers or #11 by the Saints at the latest so I don’t see him being on the board when the Bucs pick …
April 19th, 2017 at 3:16 pm
@db55….you must be a canes fan…..LOUSY!!!!!….
how can you not know who d.barrnett is?…..the kid would be a great addition tour defense….must suck being a sugarcane…lol…GO BUCS!!!!
April 19th, 2017 at 3:28 pm
DB55 Says:
April 19th, 2017 at 12:25 pm
he’s a woman beater.”
—————
GMC better watch out then. Ha!
LMAO! Man, you’ve got issues!
April 19th, 2017 at 3:51 pm
Don’t think he’ll still be available, but I would LOVE this pick.
April 19th, 2017 at 4:01 pm
addng a 10 asack guy is never bad is it??
