Clinton McDonald: Spence Can “Be A 10-Sack Player This Season”

August 13th, 2016

clinton mcdonaldThink the Bucs are high on rookie defensive end Noah Spence after his preseason debut?

Consider what starting defensive tackle Clinton McDonald, a man with a Seahawks Super Bowl ring, told WDAE-AM 620 Tom Krasniqi after practice today.

First, McDonald raved about Spence’s “agility” and combination of feet and hands.

He also was happy to compare Spence to Cliff Avril, who has had a standout career with 61 1/2 sacks through eight seasons with Detriot and Seattle.

McDonald said Avril and Spence share the “same dog-like mentality.” And most important, McDonald said Spence has “the capability to be a 10-sack player this season.”

Exciting stuff from McDonald, considering he’s one of the more thoughtful voices on the Bucs.

I’m telling you, this kid is special. Never saw a college tape where anyone could handle him for more than a second…teams had to speed up their passing game and roll away from him to avoid him. Saw the same thing the other night…nobody could stop him for more than a second.

  2. DB55 Says:

I think he might do better than 10. In like 4 plays he caused 2 sacks for his mates. 22 sacks that should be his goal. Lmao. Aim for the stars is all I’m saying.

  3. Jim Says:

No tackle on the Eagles could stop him, he was putting pressure on the QB every pass play.

I think you make a good observation about him causing sacksfor his teammates. I’m not going to get caught up with the total sack number, as long as he is disruptive and changing the way teams play. The sacks will come, sometimes a teammate is going to steal your sack though.

The future bright for us people. Its time to shake off the defeatist mentality and start harboring a championship mentality. Shouldn’t just be team members,we all should be thinking Superbowl. Not next year or a few years down the road. This year gotd@$!mit!!!

  6. Buc1987 Says:

I’m happy with Spence so far and to me that’s all that really matters. Me. lol

I agree with DB and Destro as well.

    “causing sacks for his teammates”

When Jac Smith was healthy the end of ’14 and beginning of ’15 – he was the one doing most of that. Now there’s nowhere to hide or roll to.

N.Spence, Ayers, McCoy, Jac Smith is one hell of a quartet to speed rush with. Add Howard Jones into that mix as well and we’ve got a lot of fast Dlinemen that are going to cause a lot of problems for opposing offenses – especially on 3rd down and long (which seemed like an automatic conversion last year).

I believe “It’s time to EAT” was the catchphrase for the Dline the other night. And my interpretation of that is – “Somebody’s getting a sack and we don’t care which of us it is as long as the QB winds up on his ass. If the unit succeeds we will all get fed.”

  8. DB55 Says:

Not only the sacks but I seen a couple of holds that didn’t get called not to mention the safety caused by Ayers.

  9. Fred McNeil Says:

    Akeem looked good too.

  10. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    Everybody’s eatin’!

  11. Destro44 Says:

I just read that the D line broke Carson Wentz. Well more specifically his rib. That’s a huge improvement from last year when quarterbacks didn’t even break a sweat.

  12. stanglassman Says:

Hopefully A.Spence can be our Kawaan Short. Man was I disappointed the Bucs didn’t draft that guy a few years back.

  13. 74 bucs fan Says:

Like a wolf pack! Right Stu?

  14. tnew Says:

db, I agree. The kid was held almost every play. His get off is so quick the tackle had to hold him or the blindside was gonna be rocked. I was so excited the Bucs got him. He was my dream player in the draft. I would’ve been excited to draft him at 9. To get him in the second round was just crazy.

  15. Buccaneers Says:

Spence looked very good but Ayers really stood out to me. I can really see Ayers creating matchup nightmares.

McDonald was chirping in the buccs rewind vid that “everybody eats” when we get push like that upfront or something to that extent; talking to Noah Spence directly. They were jacked-up and that jacks me up!
