“They’re All Excited”

August 11th, 2015

Doug Martin’s transformation was a focus on NFL Network. His dramatic weight loss is revealed. Photo courtesy of Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Afternoon practice at One Buc Palace is under a weather delay, but NFL Network cameras are still rolling and Mike Mayock is out here talking to all the important Buccaneers.

Mayock shared news that Doug Martin is down to 208 pounds, and of the regime he says “they’re all excited” that Martin is again the guy that took the NFL by storm in his 2012 rookie season.

Martin is listed at 223 pounds, and that’s what he weighed at the NFL Scouting Combine three years ago.

Yes, Martin has changed his body, which already was muscle bound and strong. Back in May, Joe met Martin at a Buccaneers charity event and immediately asked Martin about his obvious transformation. Martin downplayed talk of weight loss and said he just had more muscle and less body fat, and that’s all. But Joe’s eyes said otherwise.

Martin does look quick in practice this summer, but he’s got a lot to prove after two rough seasons. Remember, Martin wasn’t sharp before his shoulder injury in 2013.

So, he has received consistant critisism for his inability to break tackles…does losing 15 pounds improve that? Or is that just 15 pounds of lost punch upon initial contact?

  2. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Licht needs to get on the phone with the Jets and offer Glennon for a 2nd.

  3. Buccfan37 Says:

Glennon aint going nowhere, until he does. Aint nobody giving up a 2 for Glennon, until they do. I say he remains with the Bucs, and rightly so.

  4. Buccfan37 Says:

I expect the muscle hamster to regain his form and be a vital part of running back by committee. Lighter means faster.

  5. Danati74 Says:

Come on Doug! I hope your back. You got alot of doubters crying and dont believe your back. Sure it was a couple of rough years, but beside a very few…it was rough for everyone else. At lease your RC year, you went to the probowl. 3rd in total yards that year. Basically was an everydown back. None the less…lets churn some butter muscle hamster…

How does a RB show anything in training camp? Other than blocking and receiving out of the back field. Rushing I would think is pretty hard to gauge in practice especially with limited contact. Lets see how the team looks starting on Saturday night. Hopefully we will look pretty sharp.

  7. celly Says:

LOL at people still holding on to the hope that Glennon is worth a 2nd.

  8. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Buccfan37

Geno Hayes was punched by a teammate today and his jaw was broken. They were already not overly happy with him.

He’ll be out up to 10 weeks.

    There is an opportunity there.

  9. Larry Says:

This thread is not about Glennon. Haters gonna hate. I for one, sure hope that Doug can repeat his game against Oakland. I watch it every once in awhile.

  10. The Real Malloy Says:

Bonzai, Geno Hayes is our ex LB…Geno Smith got knocked the _ out though…

  11. Fsuking Says:

Maybe he sucked for two years to lose the name muscle hamster. If that’s the case, say hello to Mini Might!

  12. Tampa Tony Says:

Hoping Martin can regain his rookie year form to help Jameis and this offense click.

  13. Warren Says:

Dude Glennon is definitely worth a second maybe a second and a third in successive drafts. Thing is you can’t be the one picking up the phone to start that negotiation. Not the biggest Glennon fan but around the league the guy has definite value.

  14. Warren Says:

Hoping Martin will get back to beast mode this season. If not we have enviable depth and very talented guys who are chomping at the bit to become starters and he knows it

  15. Lord Cornelius Says:

The commitment is good but I think we need to see his vision / patience / timing improve to really believe. That is what made him good early in his career when he was typically always getting some positive gain even if he had to make a guy miss in the backfield

  16. James Walker Says:

#22 looked great today at practice IMHO.

  17. Capt.Tim Says:

I would love for Martin to play well again
But this is his contract year
So if he does- what does that mean? Is he gonna suck again for next few years, until his contract is up for Renewal??
Hes been terrible last two years. Is he gonna keep playing hard? He didnt the last time

The NFL is turning into the NBA!! Try to sign all players to 3 year deals, so that you at least get them to earn their money every other year. And the laydown on you in between negociations

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

    Lol.
The most you’d get for Glennon is a fifth. Hes not a good QB.
He doesnt play to win. He plays to protect his stats.

  19. Pickgrin Says:

Martin looked sharp today – broke a couple nice runs. Made a nice cut to daylight on one of them and took it to the house. I think Dougie might be ready to run wild this year if the OLine can do their part.

  20. LakelandBuc Says:

Doug Martin should have a lot of success this season, we have some good run blockers this season.Doug Martin had a great rookie season in 2012, but he also had Erik Lorig in the backfield as his lead blocker. We should have a 2 back offense this season, with Doug and a fullback. Luke Stocker should be our fullback in the backfield with Doug Martin.
